Last night I walked onto the beach to take a few more pictures, a decided to see how close I could get to the German fortifications and i actually managed to get there and I even got inside and took a couple of pictures it was very awe inspiring and promoted many thoughts about the men who had no choice but to cross that same beech, but it had the least body count at 197 out of 23k.

I hope you get something from the pictures I had to get Liz to come and help.me back to the van, I was in pain going but the slope of the beech was making it difficult to walk back,on top of that my phone went flat on my last picture so I had to sit on the sand while my phone recovered enough to send a text.

Have you been the American Cemetery yet Kev at Colville sur mer? Fantastic museum. You will like that. It's free! Seriously if you do one thing, just one that I've recommended do that one. Easy parking and as the yanks spare no expense im pretty sure it will be mobility scooter friendly.

Reminds me Barry, there is a big American cemetery just outside Cambridge not far from me which I have never visited, funny how sometimes you never see what is on your own doorstep.

Sounds like it could be a nice (if poignant) little ride out on the bike one day.

Definitely. Always good to visit such places to honour the fallen and interesting to learn about the history. A good reason for a ride out as well!

When I ran my garden furniture business Barry, our first premises were at a place called Little America in the village of Great Staughton.

It was an ex American base and was very weird to be in their old buildings, we had the old Sergeants Mess and when we needed bigger premises we moved into the old Cinema. There was still an old gun emplacement and various WW2 graffiti on the walls.

It was in the middle of nowhere and a bit of a time capsule really.

You used to be able to overnight there I think but not sure now. I think there are also two car parks. It's a bit fuzzy in my memory but make sure you get the nearest one.

We were on our way to Omaha beech when we saw lots of flags and jeeps so we came off and turned back, it turns out to be the German cemetery, as you can imagine it is a very sombre place and very well looked after, as I suppose for our lads, there were so many kids only 19 years old and even younger, brainwashed before that, such a very sad place.
