Trip to France

I think this thread is going to crack 1 farsand posts I can't see the views on the phone.

I was just thinking about when I was looking for a map to work with, well we bought a Europe map so I could look at where the borders were, and we bought a France atlas too both have been use full but the best one has been this fold up Michelin one, notmuch bigger than my phone but loads of good detail.

Pics if you want to get one I paid €3 in a petrol station last week when I filled up with PGL.

This is the third aire we've stayed at, again full of Richard Craniums with the shite boom boom row as loud as possible and the road nearby must be a bikers test track, they were really going for it all night.

In future we'll find our own places and just use AIRES as service points or as backup.

You really need to do some research on the Aires Kev. In all my years travelling I've never had one like that. The CC infos site was always my go to as the comments were helpful but there are loads of other online resources also now. You can get an idea from streetview as well how close they are to roads or other sources of "annoyance". Next time you have some crap weather spend a couple of hours plotting the best places to stop over a few stops ahead and have a plan B. All good fun and it's great when you find somewhere special. I'm a bit fussy over where we stay and won't stay anywhere noisy or crammed. Not so bad for one night I suppose. You get the hang of it after a while and instinctively know what will be good and what won't be.

First morning I did set off on an empty road for about ten yards on the right side.

On Monday this week we were going through this tiny village with 20 zebra crossings, we were about to go over one when a stupid woman saw her friend with 4 tiny kids walking towards the crossing and stopped to let her cross, my brakes got a good test, and she got a very loud english lesson, then she started screaming at me in foreign, I had a few choices I chose smiling at her, I'd already done the shouting bit.

It's a lovely evening here in southern France.

We're in a small layby on the D111 a smooth road with fast sweeping bends and it's been biker heaven here from mopeds up to wings and most stuff in between for hours it's gone a bit quiet now, I said to Liz I could build a house here and be very happy, she said you'd soon be bored   most wimmin just dont get it at all.

I'd maybe open a little bikers coffee and cake shop, bikers only regardless of your ride.

Too bloody hot in the van so we've snuck into a forest, we're about 3000 m up a mountain side, and its seriously wonderful.

It's also a busy bikers road too.

Looks fantastic.

I'm pretty sure 3000m is a little above the tree line for most of the alps though. :p
Could be wrong though.

I'm sure you're right mark, but was working on us passing a 1000metre mark and carried on mostly going up, with little going down but I've tried to get a level and not found an app that doesn't want my card details.

If any one knows this the coords

44°18′20.59″N, 03°31′29.87″E

Hi Kev,

I think you may be looking at about 3000 ft not metres.
https://www.dcode.fr/earth-elevation suggests 966 metres.

You certainly seem to be getting some kilometres under your belt.
D111 is a departmental road number, and a number of different départements around France use that number.

Start miles were 38486, we went over 40k yesterday, at that rate we will have done 4500 ish

About 12 very high powered cars came by just now lambs etc, they were not hanging about either, they really shook the van as they went past, the noise was wonderful.

We’ve driven up and down and round and round the various Ballons d’Alsace today. Being Ascension Day the world was out in force but what really got me were the hordes of what I consider to be crazy cyclists taking on these really steep ascents. I presume they get some form of enjoyment from it.

Now these are bikers that I met and chatted with just now, from NL and making their way back down from Nordkapp. 3 generations, grandad on the Triumph Bonneville, dad on the GS1300 with son as pillion - now that’s how to have a proper family holiday biking experience. Btw it was trying to snow here just now.

Crazy is right Tony, some seriously steep hills here and stupid Bs are pedalling like hell.

Down them.
