Trip to France

If it has the sea on one side and the lumpy bits on the other it'll do for us, heading down to the pairofknees, then across and back up the coasty bits

I agree. It can get quite tedious. Hence it being a good idea to check out the routes toll and none toll in some depth the night before you travel. I think it depends where you are also. Not all of France is delightful scenery, sometimes you just want to get to where you want to be as quickly as possible and then get out and start enjoying it.
yep.. France is a big bloody place.. not like our tiny island
folks need to use the vast tolls to get from A to B otherwise you get no where on their poxy A roads

So you heading down the Pyrenees first now Kev? This is what you need then. Probably given you it before. Its quite old now so you may need to check some of these places are still there but its an awesome place. The Coast at the Atlantic side as you drop out of the Pyrenees from St Jean du Luz up to Biarritz is cracking as is Biarritz itself but not very motorhome friendly. You might need a few cheap sites for that area. Dont rush the mountains though, Awesome.

I never use toll motorways in the motorhome; I limit myself to a maximum of 90 km/h for fuel economy, so don't see the point of paying to be able to do 130 km/h, though being able to drive at a steady 90 km/h might also offer some fuel savings. Nice to see the places along the way that the motorway bypasses and it's not as though I'm in a hurry to get to overnight accommodation - I have it with me and there are normally plenty of overnighting options..
Exactly what I do, though 80kph is more often my choice.

What the heck is a "Fulli gadget" please.
It'll be a suck it and see trip, we prefer to do the small towns, sit, sup and watch the world go by, If I have put on 10kilos by the time I get home I will be a bit peeved, gorra get Liz on the frogs legs n snails too.
Gadget that gets me through tolls without clambering out to pay
You pay less than 2€ a month only whilst in France . Of course you pay the tolls as well

I have a Liz for that, and she has time to mess about getting the fee ready if we do use any tolls.

Just looking at insurance for the holiday, not happy with the wording at all.

Hi Kev,

That's the certificate, and it certifies that it meets minimum requirements, which is all that's required. What about your policy wording?
For example:
Part G: Foreign travel and European Union Compulsory Insurance
Your Safeguard Motorhome Insurance Policy provides the minimum cover you need by law in the territorial limits to use your motorhome. Your Safeguard Motorhome Insurance Policy provides the full cover shown in the schedule in any country in the territorial limits as long as:
• your motorhome is taxed, has a current MOT and is registered in the UK;
• your motorhome is otherwise permanently kept in the UK;
• your main permanent home is in the UK;
• your visits are only temporary;
• you do not need a green card or a bail bond if you want to travel within or between the territorial limits.
If the schedule shows comprehensive cover and you meet the specified criteria, then you have comprehensive cover within countries specified (which should be shown on the certificate).
I always aim to have a searchable pdf of this type of document, ideally downloaded from the provider, but alternatively scanned and OCRd. It's then a simple matter to search for the word "Europe" (which, if you don't add a space, includes "European" in the results) and for the word "territorial".

Hmm, that was quick:-

Hello,

As per our conversation earlier I am writing to confirm that you have 180 days comprehensive cover to drive in the EU.

After the 180 days you will be covered third party only (minimum level of cover).

what I do find irritating is they don't proofread the things before sending them out, an error in the wrong place could be serious.

The other issue is it runs out on 1/6/24 we'll still be away then probably so may have to accept the renewal premium, not sure how easy it will be to get another quote while away.

The idea is we have both our birthdays in France etc, 30/4 & 2/6.

Just as easy as it is in the UK Kev. As long as you can get online it shouldnt be a problem. Just watch your MOT and tax dont run out mid trip. Someone forgot to get their MOT done and therefore could not tax the vehicle either while on a long Euro trip and had to sorn it while away. Silly boy. :rolleyes:

You said that you use Asda comparison site. You should be able to access that while away. What happens after that? And how will you print out your new certificate of insurance (whether new or existing insurer)? May be that the authorities will accept seeing it on a screen, but I have no experience in that area. My motorhome insurance renewal has always fallen outside periods in which I'm likely to be touring abroad, but with ******-related restrictions I had been toying with the idea of being abroad at a time when, I now realise, I might need to be arranging renewal. Food for thought!

And if no MOT and SORNed, not legal on the road and therefore not insured either.

New MOT in April (runs out 7/4) and it'll get taxed at the same time so no concerns there, I will get it tested early march just to be on the safe side.

The insurance will be in the form of a PDF, so I should be able to get it printed off somewhere I would think.

I wonder if I could get it extended by one month then sort it when we get back.

Nope, 12 months date to date only.

I wouldnt worry about getting it printed off. As long as you have a PDF it would do I Reckon. your insured and thats the main thing if anything happens. Which it wont of course :D
