Trip to France

What about Medical, I'm building up our meds so we don't run out, and I'll make a special order two weeks before we go, but what if we fall ill or have an emergency while away we have our ehic or whatever it is called cards, but is there anything else to take care of?
Travel health insurance - a requirement for entry into France since ****** (though never checked to date).

Not true. Only a requirement if you are applying for an extended six month visa I believe.
British citizens who do not have a residency status in a EU member state and who wish to come to France for a short stay (i.e. a trip shorter than 90 days during a 180-day period) or who are in transit towards another member state or a Schengen-area state do not need a visa. Nonetheless, when crossing the border, you need to: • Show a valid passport for the whole duration of your stay. The passport will be punched when entering and when leaving the Schengen area (except for cross-border workers).• Be able to justify adequate financial resources for the duration of your stay.• Be in possession of an insurance certificate covering the whole medical, hospital, death expenses likely to be needed during the whole duration of your stay in France, including repatriation fees for medical reason.

Thats three recent ones picked at random that all state it is not a legal requirement for UK citizens visiting France or Schengen countries which seems totally at odds with your PDF link.

Surely if it was the case we would have heard about it on the plethora of motorhome forums and I never have. Your document does indeed seem to suggest it is though.

Same site as TJBi's. Different page. You'd like to think that .gouv.fr are at least close to knowing ? Perhaps not

Well no it does indeed seem to be from the horses mouth! Maybe it needs a new thread. I've not been over the water since ****** so perhaps its been discussed but I cannot believe I have missed it if it has and nobody has picked up on it. I never bought insurance for Europe, ever. Just relied on EHIC card (now the Ghic)

Never bought additional insurance either, either side of ******. Although one of me bank accounts does include a basic travel insurance, I've never looked at the details.

Only time I've bought additional insurance is for skiing.

Probably wrong, but GHIC is a type of insurance (the clue is in the name :)), so that's done for me.
Will no doubt reassess sometime, if I remember.

Maybe it something else thats not really being enforced. Its a bit alarming that the various actual travel insurance companies are saying its not a legal requirement though. You think they would have been on that one like a tramp on a bag of dropped chips. Unless its bad wording on the French site and the GCHIC card as you say qualifies. Not sure if we will get over this year but thats all ill be bothering with if we do.

The GHIC does not cover the whole medical, hospital, death expenses likely to be needed during the whole duration of your stay in France, including repatriation fees for medical reason.
It only covers treatment to the extent that it is covered for citizens of the country in question (so generally not 100% in the case of France) but does not cover medical repatriation or death expenses. The GHIC therefore does not meet the requirements.

Yes, the important bit is knowing if the GHIC qualifies as insurance or not.

I've been over the water a few times since ****** and had picked up on this before my first post-****** trip (but always took out travel insurance anyway).

Yes, just read it again and that's right.

If perhaps you think that the horse's mastery of English is not great, the French text reads as follows:
"
  • Vous devez être muni d’une attestation d’assurance couvrant l’ensemble des dépenses médicales, hospitalières et de décès, susceptibles d’être engagées pendant toute la durée du séjour en France, y compris les frais de rapatriement pour raison médicale."

As a professional translator of French, I can tell you that the horse did an excellent job. :)
