New LPG Tank Installation

The locker on our 2011 Campscout holds 2x13kg bottles of propane,
The locker on our 2019 campscout holds,

3x 100amp lithium infinity batteries
1x 50amp b2b
1 x3000 watt inverter
1x 50amp solar controller
1x 20A portable solar controller
1x 30 amp mains charger
1x victron shunt unit plus
All associated fuse blocks and wiring
I removed the gas locker fittings and plastic surround to give us a dedicated electrics cupboard,
Really pleased with the results

I keep hearing this 'when it needs replacing' trope. They don't wear out.
And they cost less than £1,500 to do a like for like replacement.
I know this because I did an unnecessary replacement.
They DO. You don't have to spend long at Charlies seeing some of the tanks removed from vans. Even had an ambulance rush in one day with gas leaking everywhere. Depends how well they have been looked after, both the tank itself and the straps/brackets run through

Just because yours may be ok don't assume that is the case for others

As to cost, if you can do the work yourself it is obviously cheaper than getting a qualified professional to do it, same as with anything else

If the tanks and staps were shotblasted and painted properly from day one then the life would double, no one bothers.
Modern steel and manufacturers aren't that busy Trev. Every tank sold has instructions about after care and inspections. End of the day manufacturers would probably say as the valves are rated 10 years that's all the tanks need to do. I have been there when 3 year old rusted through tanks have been removed though. I want to say one was 2 years old but I may be remembering that bit wrong

Hi
We have a 2018 Globecar Campscout with diesel heating and use 2 x 6KG propane for fridge and cooking. The Calor bottles are fine for 3 to 4 weeks but we are looking to travel overseas for longer and so a tank seems to be a possible solution.

I have contacted Autogas 2000 who have suggested a 30L underslung tank and to use 1 x 6Kg propane as a reserve. Cost will be around £1100.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks
We have 2 x 6kg installed and did 9 weeks in France , never had a problem finding LPG or with filling , a lot we filled at were unmanned stations ,pay by card 👍👍

slightly underselling yourself a kg of lpg is just under 2ltrs i believe 1.95 so without being anal<your 38 ltr tank is over 19 kg nearer 20 i would think
Allowing for it has a 80% cut off a 38 litre tank holds 30 litres,
I fitted the same size to mine and get just over 29litres so around 15 kg

This was the 25 litre tank I took of our motorhome at 6 years old, I only took it of to replace with a bigger tank,
Looking at it whilst it was still fitted to the motorhome it looked fine,
It was only when it was off that I spotted a little rust under where the straps had been, then I just scrapped it lightly withe a scrapper and the paint just flaked off,
But although it looks bad it was a long way away from being dangerous, I am sure getting it shot blasted and repainted it would have been better than when it was new

I had our new Boxer dinitrol'd underneath, including the 30 litre gas tank. Do you think that will safely extend the life of the tank beyond 10 years?
Did you do all box sections including inside doors a posts sills etc, steel rust from inside out as no primer or paint in there from new.

That's interesting, I filled up GPL many times in France and have yet to find a unmanned pay by card outlet yet, but I have found pay before you fill ones ☹️, so you have to guesstimate how much you need and pay upfront. Don't think you get a refund if you overpay. And on GPL on the Autoroute services where you had to prepay I asked 3 people where the prepay was and still couldn't find it, so left 😫

Unmanned GPL pay by card are often at supermarkets. You usually have to pay at a specific nearby petrol/diesel pump and select the GPL pump before proceeding with the transaction.
