Lest ye forget.....

Those "hurty words" were an incitement to violence! She was calling for the burning down of hotels that housed asylum seekers. You really think that is OK? Given that others had done the same and had actually caused destruction and injury? She is local to us and as a CONservative councillor, should have known better. Yes this old guy was treated badly and it cost him his life, but there can be no excuse for stirring up racial hatred and violence!

And really? "hurty words"? Jeez...
Perhaps see the Black Belt Barrister's take on this. He seems of the opinion that nobody of sane mind could have construed what she wrote as 'incitement to violence'. The post concerned included "for all I care", which makes a huge difference since she did not directly call for those hotels to be burned down. She lost her son to a medical blunder and so keenly felt the angst of the parents who lost their children to the Southport incident, and hence was reasonably outraged on hearing (incorrectly) that the murderer was an asylum seeker. It also seems to me that she was badly advised and misled since it appears she was told she would/could be detained on remand, possibly for months, until her case could be heard unless she pleaded guilty; which she did both to expedite her case and also to avoid losing a sentence discount in a system that seems designed to coerce the innocent to plead guilty by penalising those who exercise their right to defend themselves against accusations brought against them... and probably thought that any sentence given for a single tweet would be considerably less than the remand period she faced and so, pragmatically, took the path expected to lead to the lesser period of detention. Then, of course, you need to consider that, as the spouse of a Conservative councillor, she represents the political opposition to those who currently direct the courts...

Can you show the instance where he defended those calling for violence against 'foriners'? From what I saw and read, he did the opposite.

Of course it would depend from which News source you follow, as some are economical with the facts. Like the BBC tonight reporting on the Ballymena disturbance. They called it a 'race riot', which contains some truth. They did not mention that it arose because a local teenage girl was sexually assaulted (not the first instance of this happening in the area) by young men who were not Irish.
I've watched the reports on BBC and they quite clearly state that two Romanian boys have been charged with assaulting a girl.

They did not on the 6 o'clock news yesterday. There was criticism of this, so it would seem they have decided to act like proper Journalists. :giggle:

I'm tempted to ask you where the "proper Journalists" are but not sure I should. You did admit to being an Express reader earlier. You're gonna say GB News or Guido aren't you? :ROFLMAO:

I know ill regret posting this but Im out for the day so fill yer boots! :D

Or maybe they waited until it was confirmed and not just a rumour.
One thing I've noticed is the BBC seems to upset the Left and Right in equal measure, that tells me they are striking a balance.

Then why are TV Licence payers cancelling their subscription in large numbers? I always watch the start of the 6 pm News to see what News they have left out or what their slant is on a topical News event. It used to annoy me but now I just laugh at them.

The latest rumour circulating is that Lisa Nandy would like to means test the licence fee. The richer you are, the more you pay. All of the mainstream TV Channels are in financial difficulty but they don't have Government support like the BBC. The licence fee will just keep going up and up, especially since the Yanks stopped funding the BBC via USAID. This also means more Old Age Pensioners being dragged into Court and fined £1,000 for non payment of the fee.

For precisely the reason I posted, the Left hate the BBC for it's right wing bias, the Right hate the BBC for it's left wing bias, so they turn off. I'm not saying they are perfect, but they are the best of a bad bunch, BTW my general dislike of journo's dates back half a century to when lies about me and my friends appeared in the local press.
For a decade I did a job that entailed negotiations between management and unions, if I upset both of them I knew I'd got it about right.

If you are happy to watch the BBC, it doesn't bother me at all. Just carry on. :giggle:

The BBC report on many subjects. Now it may well be the case, that regarding economics, lets say, the left hate them, but while reporting on cultural issues, the right hate them. Either way, to suggest the BBC are balanced because they upset both the left and right is a massive over simplification.

Oh the irony of thread drift. It starts with a clip of state violence against a minority and ends with some supporting a persons right to incite violence against a minority.(Or is it only a joke, like on Top Gear?)
It reminds me of an episode of one of my favourite Viz characters, Cockney Wanker.
He is "doing the knowledge" in order to become a London cabby. The examiner ask him, "One last question Mr Wanker. How long does it take to get from 'Laverly day Guv. To 'Send em all back?' "

Truly ironic indeed. It is a joke, the UK seems to be one big joke these days. Not a funny ha ha joke either. :(

Cos they are all miserly whinging criminal pensioners like you!! I would would willingly sell my house and all my belongings to help the BBC! :ROFLMAO:

the proposal from the BBC is to add the license fee to your council tax and be banded the same way, great idea as I've downsized to a 1 bed cottage:D
Assuming a one bedroom cottage will be less than the current license fee!
I wouldn't hold your breath.

Just like @mark61 , I don't see anyone supporting any 'right to incite violence' in this thread. What I see is the result of a ton of misinformation and propaganda that's been pushed by the likes of the BBC (there is a good reason why we now say "Is that true, or did you hear it from the BBC?" when questioning the veracity of someone's statement!)
Consider that Lucy Connelly had been an ardent advocate for asylum seekers prior to the Southport incident. Now try putting yourself in her position and hearing that an asylum seeker had committed such a heinous act. In so many words, all she was saying was that she'd wiped her hands of it and was no longer an advocate for those people. Far from an incitement to violence, AFAICT she was merely saying that she could no longer care less...

Can you let us all know what is misleading in this BBC report?

It is misleading by omission. For example, it states that "Three appeal court judges this week ruled the 31-month sentence was not "manifestly excessive"." thus implying that the sentence was not manifestly excessive for the actual deed committed. However, it fails to mention that the appeal was based on her claim of her being misadvised and that her original trial had not considered mitigating factors. The actual deed committed was not considered at appeal. By signing the declaration, she effectively waived her right for mitigation to be considered, and the appeal judges rejected her appeal. Because she pleaded guilty to a category 1A offence, the sentencing guidelines provide a sentence of to up to six years and the 31 month sentence is at the lower end of that range. Hence, given that the court refused to consider whether she'd been misadvised, appeared appropriate. See what the Black Belt Barrister says on the matter...

1. I didn't get anything from the BBC. I got is directly from a notification when it was posted. As a "local" I follow all of the local politicians.
2. I was in that position as were millions of others, but I never posted hate speech!
