French crit air

So they actually just make it clear that your vehicle may or may not be ‘clean’ enough to travel through places but doesn’t actually stop you passing through or do you get a fine for not displaying and are there ANPR cameras on entering zones ?, how does the scheme actually work in practice ?, are there places only those with a *1 can go ?
In order legally to drive through a ZFE, you have to display a Crit'Air disc and it has to qualify for the ZFE in question. With a rating of 2, you should not be too restricted. You need to check the requirements for each ZFE to check what vehicles qualify (and to continue to check from year to year as requirements are tightened). There are fines for not displaying and fines for being non-compliant. In general, there should be signs when entering a ZFE that indicate what categories are permitted to enter. I believe that all checks are currently by appropriate personnel but that the intention is that ANPR will be brought into use in the not too distant future.

Thanks for making it clear to my aged brain (y)

When I said "alongside", that was in general terms of sticking it on the windscreen, not the specific positioning.
Sorry, in that case i apologise and will go and stand in the dunces corner forthwith :(

What category to motorhomes come under and what Euro standard is my 2015 2.3 Ducato? Its 4.25t. Im guessing it will be Euro 5?

AFAIK your van will be Cat M1 the same as a car, don't worry on the Euro number the French will work that out from the date of registration.
P.S. are you sure that's the correct website, looks different to how I remember it, get it wrong and you will be charged a lot more by someone reselling the stickers.

My van is a 2015 Ducato 2.3L engine. I hold a crit aire class 2 sticker (yellow) which is what I expect you would get. Many years since I applied and I subsequently upgraded to 3850kg, so cannot comment on vehicle class.
I endorse Colinm comment to ensure you use french gov site. Sticker should only cost around €5. Same applies to Germany sticker.
A french or German sticker is accepted in Spain as an equivalent since non Spanish vehicles cannot apply for a Spanish sticker.

I hope the fast routes out of Dunkirk and Calais are notrestricted zones. Otherwise it is going to cost me an additional ?€150 to cross the channel. My alternative is to throw away my perfectly serviceable AutoSleeper. And then what? buy another one which will cost at least £40,000 - or just go on cruises.
Actually I guess I could find out if any company can make my wagon at least Euro4 by sticking flaky computerised hardware on to it. I do know such companies exist, it cost a friend of mine £1500 to enable him to ride his motorcycle in London.

EDIT:
Hang on a minute. It would appear that if your (i.e. my) vehicle was registered before the Euro system was invented, it might be compliant without it being registered as such. I will find out what my camper's emissions are supposed to be according to the manufacturer, and if they are I should be able to get it LEZ compliant.

In principle, any metropolitan area with more than 150,000 inhabitants should by now have had a ZFE. However, it would appear that the French government has back-pedalled and only the five metropolitan areas with the highest levels of aire pollution are required to have a ZFE. This does not prevent others from imposing them if they so wish. Some, such as Le Havre and Caen, currently ban only vehicles that do not qualify for a Crit'Air sticker. In order to drive within any ZFE, a Crit'Air sticker must be displayed.

Thankyou for the information about going through Rouen on the 24hr pass. The fact that once you have the certificate you can go through upto 24 times a year ( obviously applying each time).
Thank you again it will save alot of time.

I have now received our German emissions sticker and we are still waiting for the crit air (not a problem yet) but the crit air is supposed to go bottom right and the German sticker either top or bottom right. However in a right hand drive neither is very safe as it interferes with the driver’s view. Ok for the continental left hand drive. So can we stick them on the left or would this prevent them from being picked up by roadside cameras on the continent. Does anyone know?

I understand that the German sticker also applies to Spain. They are so cheap why wouldn’t you get one to save a large fine. False economy

The instructions for location of the Crit'Air are quite specific. At the moment, checking is by humans and a single location must simplify this and location on the (continental) nearside would certainly facilitate viewing by humans at the side of the road. No idea as to where cameras will be located for automatic checking to be introduced in the relatively near future, nor whether they will be looking for the stickers or simply using ANPR and a database of vehicles issued with stickers. Of course, even then, there might also be some checking by humans...

What van do you have? I have a 2012 Ducato, and my correctly positioned Crit Air and Umvelt Zone stickers don't interfere with my view.

Mine is on the bottom right and it doesnt obscure mutch at all, the german one is above that, ans doesnt obscure much at all.

Ok I’m pleased to hear that it hasn’t obstructed your view I was just wondering if there was any leeway as I am aware that they are quite specific as to where on the windscreen it should go. In the Burstner I started by sticking it where I wanted to place it and then had to move it and it was almost impossible to move. I shall venture out into the cold when the crit.air arrives. Maybe tomorrow

I would guess that a Policeman would have to see that I don't have a CritAir sticker, rather than an APNR camera. I have applied for stickers but the log book doesn't have any facility to show any emissions so therefore I can't get a sticker from France or Germany. Ford didn't issue COCs in 1999 because no one had heard that they are bad. I just hope that the ring roads and trunk roads are free from emission zones.
I think what might happen if I get caught is a fine, which I will reluctantly pay - it's my fault for driving past a sign - but that would still be cheaper than paying for all the modern faults you get on compliant vehicles.
