Currently, checks are visual, presumably principally by the "forces de l'ordre". When automated checks are introduced, I doubt that cameras would be looking for the sticker; it would surely be simpler and more efficient to digitally check the registration against the database of vehicles in respect of which Crit-Air stickers have been issued. From what I have seen, ring roads are generally outside emission zones, but this is not always the case (Paris being one example), and trunk roads may well pass through such zones.I would guess that a Policeman would have to see that I don't have a CritAir sticker, rather than an APNR camera. I have applied for stickers but the log book doesn't have any facility to show any emissions so therefore I can't get a sticker from France or Germany. Ford didn't issue COCs in 1999 because no one had heard that they are bad. I just hope that the ring roads and trunk roads are free from emission zones.
I think what might happen if I get caught is a fine, which I will reluctantly pay - it's my fault for driving past a sign - but that would still be cheaper than paying for all the modern faults you get on compliant vehicles.
