  1. Plug Dilemma

I've added these sockets in my cab and in the back of the van, wired in directly to my leisure battery circuits. They can be mounted flush, or with the angled bracket, and I've found them to be secure and reliable. They also sell a range of other useful parts, and have good prices, decent...
  2. Saving fuel, a myth! see results.

Tut Tut..... You people have no sense of adventure!! :scared: (Scampa would like to stress that he can take no responsibility for the actions of anyone who takes his suggestion seriously!!) :)
  3. Take care! It can happen.

Just a thought.... If I was travelling a long way from home, I wouldn't normally have a problem with lending/giving someone a small amount of cash if I thought that their need was genuine, as it obviously was in this case. But my suspicions may be aroused when they asked for my address so that...
  4. Saving fuel, a myth! see results.

There's a quick and easy fuel saving modification that you can do without buying any fancy gizmo and with no tools required. Just slide the drivers' seat back an inch, then you can't press the throttle pedal down so far! :)
  5. smoke/co2 alarm

Lol, nothing personal, that's just my standard lecture on smoke alarms! And I really have seen the results of deactivating a smoke alarm on many, many, occasions. That's why I advise against it! :)
  6. smoke/co2 alarm

I would seriously advise anyone NOT to get in the habit of deactivating their smoke alarm, whether by using dust covers or removing the battery etc. The dust covers are only meant to be used during building or decorating work, when high levels of dust are likely. Despite good intentions, it is...
  7. Fire extinguishers.

I carry two dry powder extinguishers in my van. Both are fixed in position, one in the cab and one in the rear. Both are within easy reach whether I'm inside or outside of the van. The idea is that if I had a fire, I should be able to reach at least one of them safely without putting myself in...
  8. You know you're wildcamping in winter when..... Post your revelations here.

Yikes!..... but it was only a joke Hippy (with a hot tip included). I'm all upset now.:cry::cry:
  9. You know you're wildcamping in winter when..... Post your revelations here.

Drinking a COLD cup of coffee first thing in the morning must be a Hippy thing?!! Some of us fill a flask the night before, then we can have a HOT drink when we wake up, wherever we are! If you haven't written your letter to Santa yet Hippy, why not ask him to bring you a thermos flask for...
  10. Off to Scotland

It's only a few weeks since I was up in Applecross and Durness, but your pics make me want to go back again already! As you say, brilliant place to visit and I could never get bored of it! (BTW, I think that lobster is eating your salad!!) :)

  12. The first year with the Big White Van

Congratulations wvw on completing your first year of wilding with flying colours!! I think we're all very happy that you made it and have stuck around! I'm a bit concerned that you've only seen two sunrises though, .....obviously you're going to bed much too early when you should be staying...
  13. The oldest Wildcamper in human history

Did he die of starvation then?? (Sorry, I can't remember all the details about the case. Maybe it'll be in the next series of "New Tricks"??). :)
  14. help me decide where to go

It's hard for anyone else to tell you how to choose without knowing your interests, priorities, time available etc., but why not try what others have suggested? Make a list of your interests and divide them into categories such as mountains and lakes, seaside, market towns, museums, country...
  15. solar panel research - daily amp useage

Forgive me for asking, but are you sure that you're not confusing them with lighthouses, or maybe just big trees?? :):)
  16. The lakes

No, I've never stayed overnight in that car park, although I wouldn't rule it out, especially if I was spending the evening in the inn. There's a few POI's not too far away, including one on the Struggle itself, plus some other nice spots if you know where to look. :)
  17. The lakes

This is the pub that "Victor Meldrew" visited.... 54.464557,-2.925357 - Google Maps And here's the spot on the satellite view.. https://maps.google.com/?ll=54.46434,-2.92522&z=17&t=h It's called the Kirkstone Pass Inn, on the Kirkstone Pass road (A592) that runs from Troutbeck to Patterdale...
  18. Sandwood Bay, Cape Wrath

You must be joking.... Sandwood Bay is over 500 miles away from me!! :scared:
  19. Self Rescue?

Tirfor winches may be suitable for a few wildcampers with larger and heavier vehicles, who travel in more extreme areas, but I would agree that for the majority of us they are just too heavy and bulky. Don't forget the heavy reel of winch-cable that you'll need to go with them. If you can't get...
  20. Self Rescue?

Here's a useful tip..... Whatever type of self-rescue gear you choose to carry, don't store it in the part of the van that you may later decide to hang over a cliff-edge!! :)
