Whole of London to be hit by new Ulez expansion ordered by Sadiq Khan

when i first left the army i worked for a firm renewing sheet lead on roofs lived in digs near marble arch working on st pauls ,westminster abbey & buckingham palace as well as various churches around the city , our kit was delivered on site & we went in by train after a couple of years i’d had enough of the place & thankfully not been back

I remember getting on a train the morning after the opening of an exhibition we built at the maritime museum in Greenwich and standing nose to nose to a gentleman. Thought it only polite to talk to him seeing as we were getting close. Firstly he was taken aback that I was talking to him, I asked if this was unusually packed he told me it was like this every day ( they wouldn't pack cattle that tight) he then asked what the commute was like for me back home, I replied to him geez it can take me woh maybe two some times three minutes if I stop to stroke the cat heading for my workshop. He did look a bit peeved at that.

I loved working in London in the late 90s early 2000s. I was young then though. Had a ball. Hardly ever drove down there though even then. Crackers place for cars.

I worked there from the early 80's up until the millennium Barry. I loved the social life and the pubs but London as a whole I was always glad to drive out of.

Where I worked (Aldgate) was close to Brick Lane and I regularly used the Pride of Spittalfield pub at weekends, fantastic pub and Anne the landlady was a diamond. My real local though was the Castle in Aldgate which was managed by Frank Maloney (of boxing fame) who later became Tracey Maloney.

An opposite view:

We loved it when we looked after a fellow members flat in Sydenham for 3 months. Bought two books SECRET LONDON and HIDDEN LONDON. Our cockney friend reckoned we saw more of London than he did in the 30 years he lived there.
We also found the people friendly.
This was 5 years ago.

I worked in London on a job for 6 weeks in1988 and I hated it.

Saw the Pink Floyd and Bowie in Hyde Park in the early 70's. Decided to stay on and slept in the park for 6 weeks. I had no money so nicked milk off doorsteps and begged for enough money to buy biscuits, that kept me going, until I couldn't stand my own smell and hitched home to a bollocking from parents and school.
Great fun.

Guess London can be a love hate kinda place?

I’ll still need drive in London regularly the cost won’t matter as I pass it on, but how the government think they can exclude vehicles and still make the capital work is just beyond me.
Because people will still pay it .....

My customers will simply pay, yesterday I did 2 events in London for major US banks.

Personally I hate the place, but as much as we do events worldwide London is our bread and butter and they’ll keep booking, and Ill keep going.
Spot on ....

Obviously IF I'm paid enough to I WILL go ...and workwise I have no choice .

Out of choice though ...err no thanks .

I reckon its like serving an apprenticeship doing a few years down there when your young. When I set up my own business in 2001 ooop North it felt really laid back and backward in comparison. Which in some ways is great but it taught me to be ambitious, fast moving and to be eager. I wouldn't set foot down there now though. Im completely the opposite now. I love it living in the Dales where it still feels like the first original season of All Creatures great and small. :D
So where do you come from Barry?

I used to play football in Sydenham Ral, the bank I worked for had a sports ground there and a hostel nearby.

Great to go down there for a footie tournament and then stay at the hostel free of charge. The hostel had a subsidised bar too. 😊

Those subsidised bars are handy :) When I was a student in London, I used to work at the Student Bar which was just a minute or so walk south from my room.
When working, the only key rule was "don't be drunk on duty" - so pour yourself a drink but don't go too mad; And when not working but at the bar, leave your glass on the bar top and as the barman on duty would walk past, he would just pick it up and top it up for you :)
With the proximity of the bar to both the rooms and to the college building (a couple of minutes walking east), ended up in there sometimes 4 times a day!

Although I was never a student, I used to drink at Loughborough University quite a lot, usually when watching live groups or going to discos.

It had several bars, all of which were cheap. It also had an open air swimming pool and we would often climb over the wall for a swim in the early hours. It's a wonder we survived really.

The problem with London that I have is that Sad Sack wants £300 a day to drive my van inside the M25 -- so that trip we once thought we'd take to Abbey Wood CAMC site won't now happen. I can't justify spending £600 in LEZ charges for a return trip that consumes less than a gallon of diesel -- and truly, I suspect that Sad Sack can't either...

I was in my early 30s and the company I worked for relocated there early 98 from Darlington so I went with them. They took a massive gamble as it was the head office of a multinational Print and design franchise and they assumed a lot of the staff would go with them but out of the 52 office staff only three of us went so they had to start again. As a result as an old hand by then I trebled my Salary in two years, lived in the Hilton then bought this place in the Dales in 2000 and just came up here weekends. It was a young company in that all the staff were under 40 really. When I left in 2001 to start my own company I felt like I had been on tour with the rolling stones for three years. :D

London was great if you had plenty of money or a big expenses account but grim if you didnt.

I was transferred to London from the Midlands Barry. Whilst we were house hunting in the South East I was living in Hotels whilst working and going home at weekends. It took me 6 months to find a house :) I was on full expenses and lived like a king, top nosh and booze every night and loved every minute of it.

I stayed with the bank to see through the millennium project (Doomsday!) and took voluntary redundancy on Jan 1st 2000. On Jan 2nd they took me back on as a contractor on ridiculous money. I did that for 3 years and then gave up IT altogether. I was offered a contract by a Swiss bank at £80 per hour in 2003 but turned it down in favour of a driving job at £7.50 an hour, my agent said "are you mad" I said "No, I'm happy!"
