New car

I remember I needed a runabout when my car was getting repaired. Bought an Renault 12 for I think £100 (it was an MOT failure car) on the understanding the garage selling it would put an MOT on it (this was back in the days of dodgy MOTs and the garage was rather renowned for their dubious practices). Was a good car as well.

You want the Yobbo's version Bill! The mighty Impreza! You'll look well ard in one of them innit!

Then you can fit the motor in a VW splitty

BTW, I would strongly recommend you get GAP insurance. The last pricey car I bought I looked at and considered GAP. The car was stolen 18 months after I bought it.
Stolen from inside a locked workshop - GAP insurance is not just for careless drivers, a loss can happen to anyone.
I couldn't actually remember if I took it out or not but when I scoured my emails, turned out I did, thankfully. Got back what I paid for the car, saving me an approximate £9k loss, plus the GAP insurance also paid the excess, so the GAP cover even paid for itself in that respect.

Used a company called ALA - https://www.ala.co.uk/ - and found their service absolutely top notch. They are also a lot cheaper than any car dealers GAP insurance.
Paid out my claim with minimal delay and fuss. When I bought another car, I got another policy with them, and when I changed that car early, I took out another ALA GAP policy (I forgot about having the GAP insurance again!) and they called me to check if I changed cars or bought an additional one and as I had changed cars and no longer had the old one, refunded me the old policy cost pro-rata without any asking.
I bought GAP insurance when I got my 22 reg EV, still waiting for someone to nick it 😉

I was looking at "used" cars till about 2:30am this morning (on the computer not skulking about outside) :D

I have come to the conclusion that I might just buy something boggy basic and tiny again that wont break down or blow up. Every hot hatch or anything that looks remotely interesting seems to have a legacy of problems, certainly on the more modern stuff.

I think ill get a Toyota Aygo and stick a Hayabusa engine in it.
Toyota Aygo, you know how to impress 😏, some one was selling one on the TowCar forum saying "with the alloys and Spoiler it was a great looking sports car'"🤔😀😀😀. Spoiler! may be needed with a 'busa engine in it.

I remember being offered GAP insurance on the last new car I brought, as I pointed out to the salesman my insurance of the time already paid out for 'new replacement' if the car was less than 1 year old, so it was very expensive for a top up in years 2 and 3, since then the FSA has stepped in and sorted it out, I'm sure the ambulance chasers will get on to it soon.

It wasn't planned by any means, but I was looking to sell my car (a very nice RAV4 180SE) at the time it was stolen. I would have got maybe £15k for it (Toyota Dealers had them for around £17.5k), so the fact it was stolen and I had the GAP insurance saved me £10,000!
I can understand why some dodgy characters commit insurance fraud!

(as an aside, it wasn't actually MY car that was originally targeted, but a Subaru WRX I had in the workshop at the time. No luck with that one as the wheels were off it, so they put all the stuff they could from the workshop - tools, etc - in the back of my car and drove it off (this is what I am guessing happened). Reckon my RAV is living it's new life somewhere like Albania).

As I said, the Dealers GAP insurance price is rediculous typically.

I just checked my last correspondence from ALA on my final policy with them ....

This is just a quick final reminder that the Back to Invoice Plus GAP policy for your vehicle XXnnXXX expired at midnight on 21 July 2021.
The premium for your original policy was £105.88.

Now in my book, £105.88 for 4 years of GAP insurance (bought the car in July 2017) is not very expensive. but as they say, YMMV :)

Funny enough we are having a sort out ATM, so dug out the old policy from the 'to be burnt' pile, and my insurance actually covered me for replacement with a new car for 2 years, and the gap insurance was for 3 years, so only gave me 1 extra year.

Yeah but imagine how much fun it will be burning off unsuspecting BMW SUV drivers! :ROFLMAO:

My Hyundai i10 is driving me nuts now. Just on the brink of me possibly finally getting shot of it the immobiliser is playing up again. Its done this since 2018. The key flashes on the dash when you turn the key and it wont start. You have to bang the steering column or centre console a bit and it usually goes solid and will start. No garage or even a main dealer has been able to fix the issue in seven years. For months or even a year it will be fine and then it does it again. It knows its days are numbered I reckon. This is why I dont want a complicated vehicle. Stuff like this happens and nobody can fix them. Least not here. GRRRR!
