I am always trying to come up with ideas of how to make things work better for us in the van:rolleyes2:. I literally have no work space when I am trying to prepare food by the time I have got plates out the work top is full and its a juggle trying balance a frying pan on my head :juggle:...I thought if I could try and get himbenny to try and do some sort of foldaway work top to hinge to the door ...reluctant to do this as the wood is so nice. Might see if I can find some sort of tallish fold away table perhaps. What have you changed to make things work better for you ?

We have a hinged lid on the sink, that gives us more work space but it is a challenge!

By sounds of it she won't be able to step back far enough to get it all in the photo! Lol

i still reckon from what i've seen that most camper designs are done by a man,and that man has never been camping and doesn't use his kitchen at home.making a 4 berth van, obviously for a couple and 2 kids, with a 12 inch kitchen is basically saying 'go to macdonalds !'

well just give us a floor plan and some piccies there are some good self builders on her could come up with something or give us the model of your camper and we can browse through to fin some piccies

Can you open say a cutlery drawer and balance a tray across it?

One of the thngs I insisted on for our new m/home was a good, workable kitchen, or else we eat out most nights. Hence I have a lovely L-shaped kitchen with space to work on and a flap that lift up to extend it!

We have a drop down surface over the sink so this gives us some work space and also the toilet is housed directly behind and only comes half way up so another good solid worktop, I have to say it is really well designed:)

just had a thought if short of worktop space when plating up use microwave stackable rings and then you plate just shuffling around as you plate up

Hi n,brown sorry I dont know if you can see just how big the workspace is on this photo IMG_4949.jpg. I like the idea of having some sort of fold down wood to make it L shaped and then I can put chopping board over the sink. I am a disaster in the kitchen at the best of times but himbenny has nearly worn his dinner over his head many times. :rolleyes2::rolleyes2:

I've always found plating up a bit of a mare as there never seems to be enough room so now I just put the empty plates on the table and dish up on there - simples.:tongue::tongue:

what about a tray with fold out legs? the type you would use in bed, you could maybe stand it on the bench next to the sink. i use a chopping board over the top of the sink,it helps a bit.:juggle:

first thought is a drop down flap on loo door, the idea some one said ,a board that fits on the drawer when its pulled out. it may be possible to cut the drawer down and have a slide out piece above the drawer, or a flip up or down piece above or behind the right hand pillow.these are all built in things but you could also have a removeable board that sits on brackets across the aisle,if you can find somewhere for it,like on the back of the loo door

Where the large square cushion rests, I would certainly look at either hingeing, or glue a nice piece of redwood just below the radius, on long seat side ( I assume left hand side seat is dining area?)

If hinged, fine, or removable fixing dowels. At other end, legs that fit/rest just outside upholstery seating, you would have to be careful not to spill/drop anything on seating, or cover prior to use.

When not in use, large cushion will conseal worktop, or totally remove and store elsewhere?

Ooooo interesting !!! thanks runnach that could work or I was thinking on the having a piece of wood with some sort of a leg on it hinged on to the surface and when not in use lift up to hide the boiler (sorry you cant see that from the pics)...hmmm ideas ideas ideas.

Yeah I like that idea too ...do you know what I think the removable board that sits on brackets would work well ...and I think I could do that myself tomorrow. Try anything me. will let you know how it turn out and post some pics x

that"s a really good idea{the removeable board} think i"ll give that a try myself.

if you do try a board, then have it rest on the worktop an inch then screw a piece of batten under it tight against the edge of w/top this will jam it intoplace and one support on the other end will hold it up.i don't know whats there but maybe a couple of rubber door stops might be ok

That was my thought too. It could fold flat behind the cushion (or clip vertically in the bulkhead) & have a flip out triangular support when in use. I have someting similar on my caravan that folds flat over the sink, clips vertical out of the way or folds flat horizontal 180deg away from the sink as extra work top.

BTW, plate up on the table is the normal way we deal with dinners & have coped with up to 6 in a 5-berth 21foot M/H.

We dont use a table as such only a little fold away table just enough to put cups on really. Our dog takes up a lot of room so space is important so if we are not eating outside we eat from trays on our laps it works for us. My main thing is chopping & preperation of food really I am not the most organised of workers and constantly knocking and spilling things. I think a removable board would work really well...going to attempt it tomorrrow ;)
