kitchen Chaos

i still reckon from what i've seen that most camper designs are done by a man,and that man has never been camping and doesn't use his kitchen at home.making a 4 berth van, obviously for a couple and 2 kids, with a 12 inch kitchen is basically saying 'go to macdonalds !'

My camper design was done by me and I was male last time I looked! But I do do all the cooking, in fact I like cooking.

But I was only able to end up with a kitchen 1000mm x 450 mm (3 foot 4" by 1 foot 6") on mine without an oven. I do have 250x300mm (10" x 12") flap to extend the work surface. I wanted it bigger but the van was only a certain size :(

I don't feel an oven is an essential unless you regulary want to do a big sunday roast for 4-6 people. For couples a stove top oven or mini electric oven will cook enough for two so you takes your choice on that :)

Gosh it never occurred to me that I could cook in my new van! As long as I have room for ice in the fridge, somewhere to slice a lemon, and a tall glass, I'll be happy! (And a tub of Ben & Jerry's in the fridge);)

just measured mine ,just under 8 foot.must like food more than i thought! but we both like cooking and very rarely eat out

One possible idea might be (if there is room) is to suspend/attach an ironing board to the inside of the bathroom compartment door and lift it out putting it up lengthways behind you to use as a long shelf. Then you have an ironing board or a shelf when needed and it wouldn't cost the earth or much inconvienence to improvise with.

Ooooo Jak your van looks LOVELY!!!!!! but i see what you mean about lack of preparation space. Some of these ideas sound great, hope you can come up with something

Morning Anne....Just off to do some measurements to see what I can come up with I hope I dont balls it up:D

the ironing board sound like a good idea because it is narrow enough and has a spot where you can fit a hot pan without the risk of marking the worktop

ps it would certainly get the chat going when you put it outside during the day and would get some questions asked about your sanity taking a ironing board on holiday some form of ocd

We used to use one of those £7 tv dinner folding tables in our Autotrail when we didn't want the big table up. You can get a couple of plates on (just).

Most things that don't quite work properly are designed by men, most commonly items that they never use themselves.
There are superb exceptions of course, I'm not being sexist, honest!

I bet us girls could come up with a topper of a camper design from scratch if we were let loose.
Get the blokes to build it, of course, cos they're often really good at things like that.

But they'd have to do as instructed or it wouldn't work, and arguing would definitely have to be forbidden. :lol-053:

Hang on, I think I'm living in fantasy land.....

:king:

Right I have bought the bits and peices ....I am off to give it a go ...If I come back on here shamed faced later on you know why

Herbie, would you just run your iron over this blouse for me - there's a love :lol-053:

Lots of good ideas suggested :) I don't have any worktop space in my van either, except the little drop-down flap on the left of the cooker... it's the price we pay for our big rear lounge/superking bed! Putting the supplied worktop board over the sink/drainer doesn't work for me either, because I usually need the sink and water when I'm cooking. What I do is put our folding table sideways on, just where the seats begin. It makes a good L-shape with the kitchen and when dinner's ready I can dish up and then we spin the table round to eat. Even if you don't normally use a table inside, it's not a bad idea to have one that you can use outside for bbq or picnic. There's usually a spot to hang it on a bracket or clips for storage.

Good luck with your DIY :)

well girls if you reckon you up to it then do a design and post it on here easy to get design down just use paint and coulored boxes to show what goes where look on ebay they give approx sizes of vans

Ok I have made a complete cock up :scared:...I have bought the wrong wood a puff of wind and this will blow down BUT ......with a stronger piece of wood this is going to work. It can slide behind the cushion when not in use or can sit in the cupboard it leans on. It doubles up as a gate so the dog can stay in kitchen bit on those wet days until he dries. Loads of work top space only downfall is I cant open kitchen drawer for cutlery so would make sure have everthing out I need beforehand. IMG_5044.jpg IMG_5045.jpg. Going to get himbenny to screw in a peice of batten on the door for it to securely sit on and of course stronger wood but hey presto ...this is fab ............thanks everyone for your invaluable ideas.

Glue & pin a couple of 1"x2" battens underneath the board to strengthen it without greatly increasing the weight. A thicker piece of wood may increase the weight quite a bit. Another option is to get another identical board & glue them together to stiffen it.

:lol-053: Its not right It could do with being a bit narrower ...but will let you know the finished result. From what I tried today it could work really well for us. Hey I even put a shelf up as well to put coffee and tea stuff up out the way...Oooo get me :hammer:
