Electric Sprinter H2 L2

Just found out that it's a used vehicle which he has got at a VERY good price.

Knowing him as I do he will probably sell it on at a profit!
If it's the older model Sprinter EV he will be lucky to get it to end of the road before needing charging, their range was total rubbish, the Post Office got their fingers burnt on them, the new one shows a better range, but I've not found out what range for maximum load M-B seem very coy about that.

Another problem he might come across is where to charge it when out and about, as most of the charging points are for cars, so the space will only fit a car, and will be too short for a sprinter,

Yes I've suggested that Richard but I don't think he has a C1 license.
With additional weight the range would drop even further, with rubbish range and limited charging options I think pursuing a comper conversion would be foolish. Back out of the deal or sell it on seems the only two sensible options.
These vans seem a decent fit for self employed builders/ sparkles/ plumbers/ joiners. Most shy away from travelling very far from home and of course apart from an odd trip to the local merchants are usually only used to get to and from the job before being parked up overnight at home where they can be recharged. No use to me now I've retired but I'd have certainly considered one myself.

Just had a chat with my brother.

Nephew has decided to go ahead anyway and do a super lightweight conversion and restrict himself to 30 miles from home just to get into it. He knows it's not practical but is looking forward to working on the project with his dad and then after a year or so he will buy a decent Diesel van and transplant all of the technical stuff from the Sprinter to the new van and flog the Sprinter to a local tradesman.

Yeah he'll lose out on the deal but he's willing to wear that.

Very true, dread to think what the real life range of an eSprinter mk1 uprated to 4100 kg would be. Less than 80 miles? 🤣

Mk 2 would have a better range though.

Easiest way to tell a mk1 from a mk2 is the the m1's have a shorter rear overhang as it's based on the FWD Sprinter. Mk2's are based on RWD.

Mate of mine owns a small garden centre got a deal on two of these electric sprinters to do small local deliveries he handed them back after three or four months as not being fit for purpose he said he was lucky to get 70 miles range on a good day and they took ages to charge lovely looking things with all the toys but if you put the heater or wipers on it reduced the range massively.

As Big Wull just mentioned 50 to 80miles on a charge with the earlier Sprinter. Window fitter guy I know had one and ended up taking a big hit.

Arent you allowed more weight on normal driving license for EV? From what I had read he would be ok at 4.1T. Would need to check though as its only what I have seen on the net

Just looked it up Neil and it sounds like you are right.

I'll let him know, I presume he would still need the van upgrading to 4250kg by these SVtech?

I'll probably get shot down in flames for this but is it not possible to set up a load of solar panels on the roof and charge the vans batteries from them when parked up? I appreciate that EV chargers are not that straight forward but say you had a day on site with full sunshine so maybe 8 hours of charge on a normal 240v inverter charger?

It's possible to do but don't know how much charge you would get.

I think that his plan is to go to sites and charge via the EHU Barry - although that would take a lot longer than a proper charger. The CCC and C&M clubs do allow this providing you plug the van into EHU and then charge from a 13A socket within the van.

As for solar, I dunno but it might be possible. Didn't Tesla try and develop a car where the whole body was a solar panel?

there have been a few solar powered vehicles, they are very light and very aerodynamic. You'd need to take a tent. :)

The weight of a decent solar setup to charge it would probably make it a no go, never mind cost. It would need on of those slide out cascading set ups. Wouldn't be worth it in UK with our weather anyway. I wasn't meaning solar to keep it going though, just saying its possible to charge an EV with solar.
