Dornoch camping site Sutherland.

Dornoch has always had issues with people camping on the beach and motorhomes in the beach carpark which is next to the campsite.

That was honestly not a dig at our southern friends but as you have noticed it does seem to be the case of someone coming into an area and shouting about changing things that don't need fixing.

Oh I know it wasn't but it is true. Same happens in the North Yorkshire dales and next door in the Lake District. Most of the finger waggers and the morons that screwed up Windermere in the mid 2000s were let's just say also from even further south.

I’ve read it and everybody has their own opinion ,
Personally I don’t think we should stoop to their level by name calling on an open forum
Admin has taken years to develop a forum with moderation we can be proud of ! Calling people Twats on a public forum is not acceptable ,
Just stating my opinion
I would never “stoop” to their level. They have nothing but contempt for us. Also I reckon this has more to do with feathering their nest, than having an opinion. Just think the only place we can go to are formal places such as campsites. More business for them, and no doubt higher prices. Ask yourself why else are they on this crusade. I hope it backfires massively. I will do what I can on other sites to achieve this. They don’t deserve our business.

Maybe politely email them, asking them to desist.
I just did, I doubt they will reply though.

Hello there.

I just wanted to let you now that I, and others, find your allegations in the Northern Times deeply offensive,

"We believe that motorhome users who choose not to use campsites, caravan parks or aires place an unnecessary burden on local communities by parking inappropriately, disposing of their rubbish, chemical toilet and dirty water as well as defecating, at the side of the road”

Your comments have been widely published on the various motorhome forums and will have been seen by many hundreds of readers, the majority of which, you can be sure will not take kindly to therm. To make such allegations without any supporting evidence is in my view simply your attempt to increase the number of people using your site. I would not be so crass as to say there are not the occasional problems but I can tell you that I and others spend considerable amounts of money in local areas, shops , restaurants etc and I do not defecate at the roadside or do any of the things you complain of, Indeed I doubt you have followed every motorhome or inspected every possible place one could park to come to gather evidence for you allegations to reach your conclusion and I am certainly not a burden on the local area, the opposite in fact especially where the tourist pound is welcome.

In conclusion I sincerely hope that no one who reads the news item or any members of the various forums would for a moment ever consider staying at your site. '

We attended an 'Informal Meeting' at Hawick when the COVID Regs forbidding formal gatherings were still in place in 2021. The Organiser and the Council Tourism Officer were desperate to show the benefit to the Hawick retail economy in the face of a sceptical Councillor who was leading a campaign to suspend a modest spend to provide a functioning elsan point and fresh water supply as part of the Hawick Flood Relief Scheme. We were asked to collect receipts for every bit of expenditure so that hard evidence could be presented to the next Leisure Committee Meeting. In excess of £4,000 spent by the attendees in some 3.5 days [and bear in mind the COVID Regs prevented unfettered access to the local shops and other businesses]

I have posted a comment on search for sites. Feel free to do likewise. Also if you are members of other sites please do likewise. Honestly any motorhome owner who knows what they are stating about us and knows about their pathetic moronic petition signed by idiots, and hands over money to these people really need to think seriously what they are doing. Dornoch will be a no go area for us.

Oh I don't say its a no go area, should I go there I will just make sure I don't use their site. Having said that Iv'e been, several years ago and quite honestly wasn't that impressed.

On another Forum, a post indicates that the alleged defecating motorhomers can adopt a more hygienic practice by booking a 'services' visit for a measly £11 ...

They replied to my email to the effect that people were stealing their asssets so they had to spend lots of money on security. I assume there is nothing else to steal but water, all they need to do is shut the gates. Anyway their protest all just comes down to money.

They were getting quite excited about the 750 signatures on the "NC500 we hate everyone" group earlier. 🤣

On a three week trip right now, but when I get back I will be emailing them. Hopefully plenty of others will be doing likewise.

I am also considering a petition were people with vested interests should not be able to start petitioning on issues they stand to gain from. Also I think the same should apply to local and national politicians.

Similar happened at Glencoe village several years ago, turns out the objections were raised by the owner of the local campsite and the owner was also the local councelor.

I've emailed them too.

After reading what you said in the Northern Times, I am utterly disgusted at your attitude towards motorhome users.

"We believe that motorhome users who choose not to use campsites, caravan parks or aires place an unnecessary burden on local communities by parking inappropriately, disposing of their rubbish, chemical toilet and dirty water as well as defecating, at the side of the road”

Really? As a motorhome user for over twenty years, I can assure you I have never disposed of rubbish or waste or defecated at the side of the road. It would be naive not to recognise there are some people who do behave badly but; they are a minority and to suggest we should all be banned from parking - legally - overnight is akin to banning all drivers because of the very few who drive dangerously.

I enjoy the freedom of being entirely self contained and self sufficient, I use a mixture of wild camping and campsites every few days so that I can dispose of waste appropriately, as do the vast majority of wild campers in our community.

Your campsite, however, is one I will never use. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

“We believe that motorhome users who choose not to use campsites, caravan parks or aires place an unnecessary burden on local communities by parking inappropriately, disposing of their rubbish, chemical toilet and dirty water as well as defecating, at the side of the road.

“Regulated parks offer all these facilities in one safe location."

One wonders where on their site they offer the facility to defecate at the side of the road in a safe location.;)

'Well, sir. drive down the site main road and take the turd on the right ...'(y) 'Can't miss it, there's lots of camping stools nearby ...'

This topic has even made the CAMH club discussion forum. (I'm not a member anymore BTW). There's a few reactionary posts, unsurprisingly, but it's mostly constructive. I like the post with the photo of the Dornoch site. I wouldn't want to stop there even if they hadn't started their stupid petition.
