Caravan with awning on small car park on Arran

Would have made more sense to just have the car reversed up to the van like its hitched and what is it with Tuggers and their awnings? Especially wilding! 😵‍💫 In 15 years of motorhoming I have never felt the need for an Awning, it wouldnt have looked so bad without that not that its taking up that much space.
Exactly barry the awning is really bad imho if that was not out it may not be as bad tuggers deserve a break if theyre tired and req a rest the same as everyone IT IS TNE LAW don't drive tired ?

Gordon, without the awning, and if he parked his car behind his van instead of alongside it, fair play. Also as Barry will tell you this is probably about the smallest carpark on Arran, and is very popular with the locals. Why he chose this carpark I really don’t know. I have seen caravans parked on the island, but mainly on the west side, where there is lots of space.
As for him being tired he’s on a small island longest possible journey 40 minutes.

They used to park the odd caravan up at Sannox just beyond where the pub was but they bouldered it off. It's just become overgrown now. Shame as it was a good spot. I wonder what happened there.

I don't like parking at that spot where you are really for that reason. It often gets filled with vans with no room for cars. Michelle likes it though so if I can fit in the corner I'll stay the odd night. Much prefer the west side these days.

The caravans in sannox have moved to the forestry car park signposted for pony trekking. They are no bother, they gather shellfish and sell them for a living. They run generators but turn them off around 10pm.

We only come here this time of year Barry never in summer. Normally we are on our own as we were last night.

They might be visiting local relatives who suggested they parked there. They may also have seen motorhomes parked in carparks and do not see why its wrong for them to follow suit. Are local campsites still open?

Yes they are all open.
The motorhomes don’t have large awnings, and he could have parked his car more considerately.

On CAMpRA we are often asked why aires are not open to caravans. I know this carpark is not an aire but normally in car parks motorhomes only take up the footprint of the van. No awnings. No tables and chairs in parking area. The Spanish police have a good example of what the difference is between parking and camping. Sorry don't have the picture to hand right now.

there was a similar thread to this recently:

The problem is that the law relating to caravans and motorhomes is very out of date. We are parking in carparks and think that we can park with impunity. Not everyone agrees. Too often local residents complain, especially if people take up too much space with vans.

In N. Ireland the council by-laws apparently state that a caravan may be parked in a car park, provided it remains hitched to its towing vehicle.
Once the steadies go down, awning, or chairs etc come out the vehicle is deemed to be camping.
Draw your own conclusions.
Interestingly vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are not permitted in council carparks, and all council carparks are supposed to be empty overnight. These last points do not seem to be enforced, but the caravan parking has been in my town.

The one in Newcastle at the boat pond has many vans over 3.5t, mine is 4.3t and i have seen much bigger, pity the spots are a car share and not for vans only, also pity top carpark at hotelhas a hight barr restriction the last year or so.

this guy seems to have chosen to spend his money on ferries rather than campsites .and go wild camping. fair play , that's what i've always done . that's why i'm on this forum .

I agree but dont put a blooming awning up! Same goes for motorhomers. Some of them are just as bad and as said, Ive seen the same kind of behavior in that exact spot.

I haven't fitted my awning yet Barry, but on my old van I would use my awning but only if on the edge of a parking space so as not interfering with anyone else's parking.

I would only extend it a couple of feet and then only when it was raining so I could have a fag in the dry or take our wet coats off and dry the dog outside the van. I think if you behave reasonably with them people would see that.

Exactly Barry, no awning no issue.
Anyway talking to the guy next to us they’re here for 10 days apparently. He was talking to him when they arrived yesterday. The weathers horrible right now, we are heading to sannox now, gave up on Glenashdale falls.

Rob, there are car parks on Arran you would get away with that, they’re much larger than this carpark, which is the only carpark we can use on this part of the island. If signs go up here as they are on every other carpark on this part of Arran ,we are finished with Lamlash and Marganaheglish. And that would be a great shame for us all.

I very rarely use car parks Bill, or if I do they are usually attached to a pub and I have permission. I usually use out of the way laybys in Scotland for a quick overnight.

But if I were to use that one (which is unlikely as Julie can't travel by boat), I would be parked up where that caravan is but right next to the grass so that IF I needed to use the awning it would only be overhanging the grass by a couple of feet. (unless that is a footpath then I wouldn't). But surely that would be reasonable? I certainly wouldn't be putting chairs/tables etc out in a location like that.

It's more difficult with a 'whoosh bang' keeping things dry inside than it is in a larger motorhome which is why I'm fitting the awning in the first place.
