Whilst the term wildcamping is generic embracing all forms of under the stars living on all forms of terrain, from a motorhome perspective it really is an “off grid” forum as you have to stick to areas that have vehicle access. As such campsite fees and any fees (and penalties) linked to off grid parking are relevant.

Some give you space to wind the canopy out but many don’t. Some have sanitary blocks (Spain more so) many don’t (France).

Wish they would have French type basic aires in the U.K. even if commercial. I know we all got excited when Gwynedd council said they would create 9 aires around the county for motorhomes but as yet nothing has been done so guess the plans are on hold.

The clubs could create segregated lower priced areas on their sites for motorhomes who don’t require sanitary block use or the full pitch size but they won’t.

To be fair to the CCC though, with the 30% discount for a grass pitch without hook up and mature person discount, many of their grass pitches can be had off peak for £10 to £12 a night or even less which is why we will continue with CCC membership.

My original point related comparisons between motorhomes and caravans which used to be the main users of campsites until recent years. Hence why many campsites are located wrongly for our use miles away from towns cities, and other attractions we would want to visit. Caravans can’t use many of the alternatives we can including Aires regardless of wether you pay or not. Therefore this ultimately affects numbers using campsites when alternatives not available to caravans are available to us.

Because the vast majority on here use campsites. Using that logic we should not discuss other costs like say ferry costs.
Wild camping by strict definition involves the use of tents, or a bivouac for sleeping outdoors, not motorhomes.
 
I will ‘wild’ when travelling alone but my wife won’t consider a roadside lay-by to be part of her holiday, I think that’s fair so use CCC and private sites but I would LOVE to see more aires near to City centres either with or preferably without facilities, I think a lot of money could be made here and would accept being without awning space as a trade off as they would serve a more ‘transient’ style of motorhoming imho, in fact, if anyone knows of good city centre sites put them on here, I’ll kick it off with Liverpool marina and Chester Riverside.
 
We belong to C&CC and only use their certified sites if we cannot find a suitable park up.
Now campra is good but some a bit pricey.
As posted we prefer not to use EHU.
I am not sure if sites can use a paygo method as it may not be legal to resell leccy in uk.
Also installation costs.
In Germany the law may be different and the stellplatz are council run

I suspect Boris it's because a large percentage of people on here don't just wild camp. I do sometimes but when I'm working I live on the site, or when touring use wherever is practical for what I'm doing. I use the forums to find general information on motorhomes or if I have a problem, I can get some advice. Or even just get involved in a thread I have an interest in.

Just be aware with the 30% discount, it's not available at all sites all the time. It's moved around the network on a monthly basis to promote use of a site if their occupancy figures are down. Secondly, its only available for grass pitches WITHOUT electricity. If you get to the site and change anything about your booking, e.g. add or remove a passenger, add electricity or move to a different pitch type, or add extra nights to your stay, it will remove the discount and you pay the full price. Don't blame the site staff, it's the system! ;)

When I checked the price of a C&CC site I will be using next month, I found I could not apply ANY discount codes to the booking :( . I am stuck with the £8.50 a night cost!
I guess it means I can change things when I arrive without losing my 0% discount :)

Thankfully it seems there are still a fair few boggy basic no EHU out in the sticks CLs left with nothing but a tap and emptying. Ill be seeking them out or wilding mainly this summer. It would make sense to me to have electricity metered though. A lot of the Stellplatz I have used in Germany do this. Its much better. Stops the "Ive paid for it so ill use it" brigade hiking the prices running fan heaters in Awnings all day long etc. Cost a lot to retrofit though I guess.

We used 2 x 5 pitch sites in Scotland this summer ... £25 and £20 pn including EHU. The £20 was just a basic rough field!

There is a site near Abersoch which markets itself as an “eco site” without hook up that charges £35 a night.

I’ll stick with France where we are on a site with a heated indoor swimming pool, brand new renovated shower and toilet block which we rate the second best we have visited in 40 years of camping, cafe and bar, free WiFi, large hedge lined pitch shaded with trees, and 10amp hook up, all for £14.87 a night.

Some of the coastal aires we have stopped at have charged similar but inland ones have been free.

But for a stay of a week in one spot we prefer a site as we can spread out.

£20 for a basic CL with no hookup is taking the Pish I reckon. Been away since June mainly in Devon but also Wales and west Dorset and they have generally been £7-£12 with one very nice new one at £15. CLs with hookup seem to be generally £20-£30 but not needed one yet.

Horses for courses. I like to just meander about and stay wherever I happen to be that night.
I get enough regimentation in my daily work life let alone strictly planning out my leisure time. But there's nothing wrong with it per se and it obviously works for you.

That's probably why I mainly wild camp or use the CL/CS sites.
I haven't used a club site for years, as the cost has just got out of hand.
