Autohomes

Like you say Ems, it's got to be worth a look at if it's local.
Exciting, let us know how you get on

Emms,
Perhaps you need to Lotusanne if hers is a petrol she can fill you in on mpg and any problems with the engine and bodywork.
Lee

Well mpg on mine is about 30mpg though i go to work and back twice a day only 2 miles so it gets lots of cold starts and not time to warm up properly so better on a trip. The engine is great, as Flybe said easy to work on and easy to get at. mine is petrol too. I think you will absolutely love it!!

I really did like Dai's layout so it could be a gem. May even be worth a risk on the mechanics if the interior is good and all the caravan bits are working. Body worth a good check as I don't think monocoque at the back and roof - aluminum covered seams ?

This is pic he posted of the kitchen:

He cut half of it off! He doesn't know how to sell a van, this is a big feature of this van :)

Looking again it seems to be half and half. Probably means more of a risk of damp at the back but I think I'll still look as I like it and its not too far to go.

It could easily have 170,000 on it, I'm aware of that and old Speedo's often don't have room for the 1 infront of the 70,000 so it could have gone round a few times! My VW was high mileage, I normally check engine from cold and at running temp for odd noises and smoke, check clutch works and all the gears select without crunchy noises, if all of that is fine then it should be OK! Fingers crossed! I'll also take a magnet to check for filler in the chassis, if its been 'welded' I can check its all metal, and if its all freshly painted I can check its not been bodged!

I guess the only thing that lets it down is lack of history to back the mileage up but I think its worth a look. No harm in that!

I think you can check the milage and mot status on the vosa website using the registration number, this might be usefull Check your vehicle's MOT status and history online : Directgov - Motoring
might also be usefull to invest in a small damp meter very cheap from places like machine mart, check anywhere there is an external seam / joint, and especially around all windows, vents and also where the floor meets the sides etc, a tenner spent now could save you hundreds if not thousands later, also check the floor around the door area and keep an eye out for spongy area's on the floor (indication of delamination) can be repaired but it is a pretty messy and time consuming job

Personally, I think the monocoque design is much better - no seams to leak - but it's down to Ems budget and what she likes best as a layout etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you can always get accurate vehicle mileage via VOSA or however you do it. Our old autosleeper has definitely gone "round the clock". We have no idea what the true mileage is. People sometimes disconnect milometers, especially on older vehicles, for whatever nefarious reasons, or milometers sometimes stop working. It's the overall condition of the engine that's important and how easily it can be maintained and parts renewed. Rusty chassis can be a worse problem. Nowt worse than a rusty chassis lol ;)

The MOT check online only goes back 5 years I think, thats all I got out of it for my VW!

Yes, a bit worried about damp but will have a look. All the Autosleepers are either above my budget or miles away, I also like the appeal of this being a slightly newer base vehicle and a transit. The Autosleepers with transit bases seem to be circa 1986, the others I've seen are on the Talbot/Fiat base.

I've got nothing to loose by going for a look.

Thats really nice too Ems, thinkits same as Marie's and thats a really nice layout. Be really interesting to compare, and best way to get a feel of the different layours. Think the side door in the first might be better as dont have to walk through kitchen to get to seating and the luton bed looks bigger, which would be better if you planned on sleeping up there. But really like the 2 facing settees in second one, hard to get proper view of seating in first. They both look great! Bet you cant wait to view them!

Hi Daiboy here, I'm had a few PMs with Ems concerning the original post. This is identical to mine apart from the engine. I love mine.:dance::goodluck:

How did you get on today viewing the vans Ems? Did Beau like either of them?

No, I didn't view either in the end. As soon as I asked to view the Autohomes one I didn't hear anything, they had responded to all my questions prior to that and I didn't go to London to see the other one as I had ear ache. I'll try again next weekend, the right one is out there.

Bedford Autosleeper 1982

How about this? Fair distance down in Suffolk though. Don't know anything about Bedfords, may be a bit too old? Wacky upholstery!

How about this Autosleeper Talisman (Talbot) in Leominster, Hereford. It's a dealer, so perhaps a bit of a warranty available, part exchange, room to bargain on the price?

Another Ford Autosleeper in Luton, but maybe another suspiciously cheap/scam advert? Also doesn't have the overhead bed just cupboards.

There are loads of scams out there, the amount that I ring up to view and they tell me its in Scotland but will deliver free as long as I pay now! Er, no thanks!

I'll find one, trying not to rush as I'd like a good one to keep for a long time! I'm still going round in circles with what I'd actually like thats why I wanted to view some at the weekend but it didn't happen. Too much choice out there!

Marie's suggestion of Ford Autosleeper in Luton, may be worth checking out as it is not too far, and also it may well prove to be a genuine bargain. Worth a 'phone call and if it sounds suspicious walk away.
