Autohomes

Hi Emms
Its worth a look, but make sure to look at the bodywork especially at the front there seams to have been a lot of work done on the front, make sure it was done well.

Its had a bit of welding done, all photographed so I will be able to see what was done on Sunday hopefully. Its fairly local, there are Autosleepers I'd like to look at but they are in Devon or Weymouth and have little recent hsitory. Will see what its like then, I'd never heard of them untill I stumbled across it! :) Learning fast - there is alot of choice out there!

Hi Ems, my van is an Autohomes Frontier, on a 1989 Transit. I can thoroughly recommend them, the design is brilliant, they have thought of everything and made really good use of the space, plus it is really versatile, the seating can be arranged in several ways and theres an extra base for the tables so you can use one outside. The quality of the build is really good, mine is 23 years old and everything still works and is in good condition. I dont know the model in the ad but I am jealous already!! Let us know if you view it:dance:

ps they are very similar to auto sleepers in looks, materials and quality and I think the factories were close together, i reckon the designers must have been spying on each other!!:dance:

Just wondering what mpg you get on those older ford petrol engines with the coach-built body? It's only got 60,000 on it, I do wonder about if the mileage is genuine on some of these older models, that's only 3,000 a year. I guess it could be right if the same kind of people used it all its life.

Vern, mine had only 62 when i bought her 5 yrs ago, all recorded genuine and only 2 owners, its now got 72k so its feesable that its genuine

Yep, true about the mileage. I can see one can only do 3,000 a year in a Motorhome if it's a second vehicle. The problem is they all seem to have done 2-3,000 a year! A clocked petrol engine could be a liability, so it would be worth a careful check.

It looks a nice size. Mine is 17 ft 8" 5.4m - that one is 18 foot or about 5.5m if they measured it right, LOL, If so it would fit nicely in a parking bay and make a good all round vehicle :)

It could easily have 170,000 on it, I'm aware of that and old Speedo's often don't have room for the 1 infront of the 70,000 so it could have gone round a few times! My VW was high mileage, I normally check engine from cold and at running temp for odd noises and smoke, check clutch works and all the gears select without crunchy noises, if all of that is fine then it should be OK! Fingers crossed! I'll also take a magnet to check for filler in the chassis, if its been 'welded' I can check its all metal, and if its all freshly painted I can check its not been bodged!

I guess the only thing that lets it down is lack of history to back the mileage up but I think its worth a look. No harm in that!

My big worry would be the petrol engine.

I would guess it will only do about 15-18 MPG, so it might be worth checking first.

Not too worried about mpg, I'll be crusing at around 50mph I expect and will be using a small car daily so will only be for holidays/weekends! I don't want a diesel as I might want to go inside the M25. I was going to get something I can use daily but I changed my mind, I don't have the time to do a self build in a newer van and I can't afford a newer motorhome so sticking with 2 vehicles for now.

Emms,
Perhaps you need to Lotusanne if hers is a petrol she can fill you in on mpg and any problems with the engine and bodywork.

That's exactly the same as Daiboys - lovely van with a fantastic kitchen. Parked right opposite you at Greywell Ems. :lol-053:

I thought Daiboys was an Autosleeper when I was at the meet, they must be very similar! I do remember that the door was in a different place like the one on ebay - quite excited about looking at it now :D

If that's the same as Dai's, it's a great layout ... if you like cooking that is! The kitchen doesn't come out properly on the Ebay photos.
