£38.60 a night

£38 a night for what? A parking bay and use of a washroom. No different really to a truck stop. Commercial sites I’ve looked at aren’t that much and they include entertainment, bar, swimming pools etc. something really does need to be done, I certainly won’t be lining there coffers.

If thats the Baltic Wharf site near Bristol harbour, marina and the cottage pub then Im told its a good site. Its certainly in a good location next to the historic harbour, near the SS Great Britain and walking distance to the city centre, definitely not a truck stop! Its rare to find a campervan site actually in a town or city especially in such an expensive/valuable prime location. I assume the price per night reflects the rent the site owner has to pay to rent the land in this location. It would cost around half that price just to park a car for the night in Bristol let alone rent a hotel room for the night. Unfortunately Im told the site is being forced to close soon because the land owner has sold the land to a developer of expensive waterfront flats.

Few years ago campsite owner admitted to me that they made money on their EHU . Obviously that would have subsidized other expenses .
Now , possibly , they are trying to claw back that profit

I think that used to be the case, but I'm sure I read at some point that a cap was put on what they could charge at marina's and campsites. But how much profit that cap allowed I've no idea.

...but of course it's not that simple!

All this talk about sites? I thought we were wild campers (off grid parkers). I have not used a site in years. Last time I tried was Baltic Wharf and they were full (well off season) but they wouldn't let me fill and dump but did direct me to a nice spot just under a foot bridge in sight of their entrance and quite convenient for the ferry into town and the nearby dock was well supplied with tap bollards for boats and I carry three cassettes so no probs.

Yeah!! All the Wildies are getting old and soft if you ask me talking about and staying on Clubby campsites! I bet they are putting up net curtains and tutting at people not parked the right way round next to the carefully set out pegs every six metres. Next they will be all wearing beige crimplene trousers and writing to the club magazine to tell them how wonderful the wardens are who are now there bessie mates! :ROFLMAO:

Im only staying on this CL in the lake district because I felt sorry for them with no customers. Its backfired as they cant afford to move now due to the amount of leccy Ive used. 😬

Not sure about that Rob. Who would have the authority to do that ?
Maybe marinas are controlled by the canal authorities ?

Apparently it's an OFGEM ruling making it illegal to resell at more than they buy it for.

Very vague though in that they can't charge more per unit but it seems they can charge a fee such as £10 unmetered. It would therefore seem that paying by the unit would be a fairer system.

The rules around charging for electric are quite specific, so for instance if the same pitch was offered with and without electric the provider has to justify the price by historic consumption of electric or metering. This is why C&MC made electric a inclusive part of all pitches, no calculations to be made. Many other campsites (who follow the rules) will not offer the same pitch with or without, this then means they can claim that a pitch has 'extra facilities' to justify price and not a specific charge for amount of electric used.

It's the last paragraph in the link I put up that confuses me Colin;

*** We have received confirmation, from Ofgem, that it is acceptable to show electricity separately, as long as it is a round sum amount, and is not charged on a per unit basis. So; “EHU: £4 a night” is totally acceptable and legal (even if the cost to the site owner is just £1 per night) as it is not itemising the units separately, simply charging an ‘all in’ fee. In this event, it is an issue of terms and conditions of the site. If they charge £4 a night, and you book on that basis, then you have accepted their conditions, and they are entitled to charge that.

That is a badly worded item.
That £4 has to be justified to be legal, you might only use £1, but if someone else has used £7, then it's ok.

I would presume (maybe wrongly) that the fixed prices would be set to cover the maximum useage possible?

I can't find any other articles to clarify the situation though.
