Second Thetford casette - is it worth it?

Bloody obvious to anyone with a brain innit,

Strategic squatting mate 3 inch top helps, but not good to relax or you walk funny for days.

I carry three cassettes. We rarely need the third but good insurance. We use the toilet just like the one at home except for the length of flush. A cassette lasts just over a day and I use a purpose made trolley for emptying, well they are jolly heavy and it is sometimes good to hide what is in there. I only use bio washing powder in cassette so OK to dump in toilet. Rarely smelly and I have nose like bloodhound. Emptying is not so good though but soo much better than SOG.

An interesting sub-plot of this thread is how long people can make their cassette last.

Shorty after getting our van 13 years ago we realised the toilet flush was pretty ineffective and just added water to the cassette. We find a quick wipe with toilet paper, when needed, better - it gets a thorough clean each time the cassette is emptied. Some years ago I started using a pee bottle. Our cassette now lasts for six nights, with two of us. In the UK we then visit a campsite. In Europe we can empty more often due to the good availability of aires. A second cassette would mean we could wild camp for 12 nights. Our longest trips in the UK are typically less than 30 nights so maximum three campsites, which is OK.

Using a water spray bottle with something like Zaflora can be quite effective over the standard weak flush. I use that method at the times the water tank is empty (winter time typically) or at night when the water pump is switched off or if I forget to turn it on (tend to have the pump switched off when not using the taps out of habit)

We normally get about a week give or take a day or so, depends on the weather IE we try to go wandering (I have a 4 wheeled walker with a seat) if it's dry sit in the van and drink lots when it peeing it down.

The heater exhaust is relatively low to the ground, but probably looks lower than it is. In fact the vehicle fuel tank and chassis are closer to the ground than the exhaust is and the only thing I ever catch on rough ground or ferries is my towball. When refilling with LPG I've generally been driving for a while therefore the heater won't have been running. Given the choice I'd have put the filler point elsehwere but it was already fitted. I plan to move the gas barbecue point to the other side of the locker though.

In terms of biogas I produce enough of that myself! :)

I do like the repurposing of the locker though.

Liz has the phil osophy that no vacant space shall go unfilled, and she then has the temerity to blame me when I can't find anything.

I think the longest ours has lasted would be about six days and we use it for everything. :D

Its the big long thetford though. I think they might be 20 or 22 litres.

Typically four days is about max but its just never been an issue as said, I can carry it on the bike but generally in Europe there are aires all over, in England I would 95% of the time be on a CL these days, Scotland we wild camp but generally find places to empty ok.

I'd never do it so just a question but often out in the wilds you will pass a steaming pile of slurry from the cow shed, how bad would it be to empty onto that.

Another point I know it is frowned upon but is it actually breaking any laws to jsut dump in at the bottom of a hedge.

There are huge differences in the 'toxicity' of waste from Herbavores to Omnivores/carnivores ...

Let alone the potential of certain medical treatments surviving transit through the human digestion ...

Just dispose of human toilet waste in an appropriate manner ....
Down a toilet or bagged and in a dog waste bin ...

It's really not that difficult to not dump it in a hedge bottom

You also said 'Just a question'

So I posted 'Just an answer' ....

At no point did I say you 'did'

that first comment made me think .... should Vegetarians (not on medication) be allowed to dump their cassettes in a wider range of places?

I can get into trouble with stuff in text, so easy to pick up the wrong slant,

I read as written but it can (and was misconstrued)

I wasn't meaning you said I did, I was just emphasizing my post earlier :) :)

I'm thinking of purchasing a second loo casette to take the stress out of loo use when the light comes on.

But Mrs Moped keeps reminding me that Spain and France have plenty of service points so is it necessary?

We normally park up in permitted spots anyway but they don't always have service points.

We do have payload and storage available.

My thinking is we can be more flexible when parking up and maybe stop for longer periods in spots not serviced.

A trip to Ireland in 2019 was an absolute knightmare for casette management but we managed it by using green bio fluid.

Be interesting to get the feedback from those who are double casetters.
Hi
I looked at a 2nd cassette but expensive, prone to damage and leaking, so bought a tough 25 litre liquid container with large access caps. Works a treat and saved me £100!

We have a second cassette. Has come in useful especially when we stayed several nights in Queen Elizabeth forest, or wild overnighting between service points. Means we can be self contained for up to 6 days unless fresh water runs low! Came in very useful the week we spent at a folk festival two fields away from the only CDP which regularly had a queue!
