Vehicle Excise Duty. otherwise known as Tax Grab.

Julie's car is £0 per year tax and it's a 1.6 Diesel. I sometimes wonder how they work it all out?
I have always wondered how they work it out as we have one car that is nearly £800 per year another that is £240, and the motorhome that is phgv so only about £160, then we have the ambulances that are free as is my tractor.
But no matter how much they put it up the way they waste money they still won’t have enough

VED rates and categories have always changed nothing new there and the honeymoon for EV's was always going to end and rightly so. If there is one category that has always been overcharged then its motorcycle rates. They do virtually no damage to the roads and take up very little space. 2024 rates.

Yep and I believe the omissions are much less. Its ridiculous that my 650 costs almost as much as a 4 ton motorhome and more than a lot of cars. That is bonkers. It probably only does two or three thousand miles a year. I suppose at least you can Sorn them easy enough now for the months you don't use them.

Under the previous incumbents VED was based amongst other things on the value of your car regardless of emissions. If the car new was over a certain price you paid an additional £350 a year for the first 5 years. And it made no difference if you haggled a lower price below the threshold, the tax was based on the retail value as new. I was looking at a new car a few years ago and this put me off buying, so I am currently driving a 2017 Merc 220d which has higher emissions and paying £210 a year instead.
Then the one that really makes no sense and effects many on here who drive heavier motorhomes over 3.5t, why do they pay less tax than a modern 3.5t euro 6, it’s bonkers.

We could always discuss the pay per mile alternative again!

Slightly off topic but I think I posted a thread a while back about how fat cars had got. Interesting FB reel here. I think thats how they should be taxed. The fatter and bigger it is the more you pay and the fatter the driver and passengers the more you pay. They could fit little weighbridges at the end of everyone's drive. That will focus a few minds and solve the obesity problem as well!! Win Win!! Or summat. :D

Frightening thought given I paid £2.50 to travel 1.8 miles, QE2 bridge.

As an aside, son told me recently about car parks charging different fees based on emissions, enter reg no, it looks it up and charges accordingly, I'm assuming in London.
We were discussing the Dartford charge in the Pub last night, I always either go early or stay at the Dog and Partridge in Stifford to avoid paying

And this sort of post shows the dangers of believing that YouTube is a reference site! I would guess no one really knows what will happen. Yes, electric cars have to start paying their way and it should be the equivalent to something like a Range Rover. It is the weight that does damage to the road, not emissions. And "Tax Grab"? How would the government provide services without taxation?

Emissions damage peoples health which is what the government would have us believe is one of the main reasons to increase the tax.

But nobody is saying that taxes should be abolished, just applied sensibly and logically.

Cars account for 10% of global transport emissions. And that is not just exhaust emissions. Minute particles of tyre rubber is becoming another real problem. There are many studies that show tyre wear causes more particulates than car exhausts, up to 2000 times more. And as electric cars are heavier and have more tyre wear, they should pay more if it is an emissions tax.

I can't argue with that.

Thanks but I don't know where he is getting that figure from of £10. I think the very early ones were but then its complicated because older cars go on omissions only I think. My shitty 2010 Hyundai i10 is £30 or something but a newer one is £110 I think. Dunno.

Will my £20 a year VW DSG 1.6 diesel go up
My 1.6 diesel Volvo estate is £35 per year, the Fiat Panda 1.2 petrol that I previously had was £190, funnily enough the Volvo is also cheaper to insure and goes an extra 20 miles per gallon
