Hi all .so.my 1994 fiat hymer b534 2.5 td has been stood for about 7 years ..due to the timing belt being sat on the same teeth that long I guess it's recommended to change it .
What's my chances of driving it 6.miles to a garage to do the work..without the belt breaking
I'm getting somebody out to my home to change the tyres before it goes for mot .
I have gradually worked.my way around getting things back up.to.

You see Americans jump starting 20 30 year old, will it start on yt. If its a chain would be better than plastic/ rubber. But why risk it if it runs & fixED for £400
CHAIN OIL IS A GOOD PRICE. HEADGASKET NOW EXSPENIcCE

I will get it ✔️ But wondering if it will make it to the garage before breaking 1cup .pretty sure mines a belt unfortunately .maybe someone on here knows. It's ticking over ok on drive thanks for reply. Hope it is a chain

If the engine has a plastic cover at pulley end then its a belt, alloy cover then chain, drive to the garage.

If its running all good check oil and water and go for it bang bang.

Dont tell garage as they mite try one on.

Drink a cold beer and if it pops your have to runaway. Lol .Your gonna have to get cab home if alls good on arrivel. take someone to lunch your treat.

It's only money bag of sand.

If it is ticking over ok then it will make it to the garage, as most timing belts break whilst idling as that is where it is under most strain.
I have had so many people say to me,
I don’t think there will be much damage as it was only ticking over when it broke,
But the damage is just the same, plus they usually spin it over again with the key to try start it again, as they don’t realise at first that it was timing belt failure that caused the engine to cut out

Let it tick over for a while before you set off to the garage, that will warm up the belt and soften it slightly then take it easy on the journey, nice gentle acceleration.

Even if it breaks at tickover the valves will be bent and some pistons smashed, sometimes the engine is just scrap and not worth fixing.

Has anyone here ever had a timing belt break on their vehicle?
Yes years ago with a mondo diesel, it was just on tick over whilst I closed the garage door,
It absolutely destroyed the head.

And another time was with the old transit that had the banana engine, they were ok as they just bent the push rods,
Occasionally they would snap the cam shaft.

Had one go on a Bedford midi....rockers broke, didn't bother going any deeper as it was a rusty heap. Friend had one go on an escort,we got that going again , had to straighten a few pushrods but pistons were ok. But think that was a petrol lump, which are a lower compression ratio.....the ford pinto 2litre would survive as well, my dad had one go in his 2000e MK3 cortina..

Many years ago a boss of mine had a Vauxhaul Carlton estate. During my tenure at that company it broke two timing belts. Fortunately, in that engine, the pistons and valves did not interfere, so he would just glide to a halt at the roadside.
At the time i found it quite amusing.

Had mine go on 1600 MK5 Cortina on my way to pick my mate up at 4 o'clock after work. Got a new belt from local Motoraids and still made it to squash game at 7 in the evening. Yep, safe engine (y)

Never understood why they went away from pushrod engines, skoda engines never gave problems if serviced and a chain drive was an easy half hr job to change.
