The future of motorhome TV and Data

I'm not taking ANY credit for any of the pictures.... The camera does the clever stuff.
Decent glass on a SLR is always king... BUT...
I've got several DSLR/Bridge cameras...
But they get used next to never these days...
Phone is ALWAYS in my pocket... And the best camera in the world is no use when it's at home.

The s22 ultra has 5 different lenses on the rear.... ;-)
Far to modest, you still need to see a good photo, know how to take it, and compose it properly. Yes I agree as I said it’s much easier now to take great photos, you see that on here. But that does not change having the eye for a good photo, and turning out photos like yours. Anyway I enjoyed viewing your photos.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Starlink. I have been roaming all over the world now for well over ten years and I regard data as an essential service - just like gas and electric. All our TV is now via internet, and our monthly data bill is around 100gb if I am careful, and 300gb if truly unrestricted. For this I am willing to pay up to around £75 a month, but it is rarely that high. I run a router and a phone, and getting the best local deals is all part of the fun. It is occasionally frustrating, but sometimes surprising. Currently in Turkey which has ridiculously complicated deals, but I have ended up paying £15 for 100gb which is excellent value - but it took 3 days to sort out and needed the help of a local.
But Starlink will be the future, I would pay £100 a month for it now, but the Starlink RV equipment is still too bulky for my liking, but technology moves fast and I am expecting a small dome on the roof in the next couple of years, and the price will fall once the other constellations go up, can't wait to see the back of sim cards!
As for network reliability, I have found it so good that I can count the number of days with no internet in a year on my fingers, I can manage quite happily on 3G, and in some places 4G is so congested that switching to 3G is faster.
When in the EU I generally stick with UK roaming deals, it costs a bit more, but not having to use a VPN is worth the extra. On the way to Turkey we used a 3 sim via the Smarty network - it has the usual 12gb limit, but for £7 we could get unlimited and as it turned out unrestricted (fast) internet for 3 days, which is a theoretical and expensive £70 a month, but we found we didn't actually need it 24/7 so it came in well within budget. And now we are out of EU I just cancelled it, and can restart any time in the next 6 months, I know there are better deals, but we were so impressed with the constant high speed we were happy.
But the future is definitely in space! And the networks know it - they must be worried. I have a friend in France who is on Starlink fixed and he loves it.

With the greatest of respect all that is exactly what we should be able to avoid. You say you want to see the back of SIM cards but to me one that works seamlessly everywhere in the UK and Europe across all providers sounds a lot less complicated than what you describe and the last thing I want is another effing dome or dish in the roof!! I want to get shot of the one I have!! 😬

You'd have 2 tits then Barry.

LOL! It would be funny I guess. You could stick a couple of thimbles on the top of each one.

So a dome for TV, a dome for starwars internet or whatever its called and a bloody great antenna on a pole for WiFi when all else fails. All I want is a tiny sim card that does all that. 😭

Well that went over your head. You would only need one small dome for everything, that's the whole point.

So when your surrounded by trees in your motorhome it will still lock on then so I won't need my WiFi antenna on a pole spending half an hour dicking about with it?

A sim card that covers all providers costs nothing, just a contract and some foresight and collaboration from the telecoms giants.

The long and the short of it is we as consumers should need to spend nothing on equipment, the providers need to deliver it to what we already have.

I read a Youtubers experience of Starlink.... He found in one location it worked well, but another not that far away the next day it wouldn't work. Strange as it would seem you would just point it at the sky with this big network of satellites but I guess not. Seems that has some way to go like many other things.

I'm not sure if having TV delivered solely over the Internet will work? Right now the vast majority of Viewers watch in the traditional way i.e. capturing the signal via their aerial. I wonder when and if the content providers (BBC, ITV, etc) and the ISPs will have the bandwidth and infrastructure to deliver peer-to-peer?

Watching live TV is a thing of the past or soon will be thank god. Websites like iplayer are great as it's all about on demand. Smart TVs in our homes allow us to stream and watch what we want when we want. Communications now are no longer just over the phone, they are video calls or video conference calls (zoom, teams etc). I can get my laptop out or phone and watch anything I want when I want, providing I have a decent internet connection.

Imagine a world where there is no more French people driving about the Aire frantically trying to get their £2000 satellite system to find its way through the trees or when you want to Skype or WhatsApp someone from a Scottish island you don't have to buy an extra sim to do so or drive 20 miles to a WiFi hotspot. It's all doable now, they just won't give us it.

but when EVERYONE is trying to do it? nah. YOU may do stuff that way but most don't and changing those habits is a generational thing.

Sorry, but it will not be happening anytime soon.

I beg to differ. There are already many services where almost the only way you can access them now is online.

Personally, I resent the forced usage of ‘online access only’ when it comes to essential services.

The changes will happen a lot faster than you think - they are already well down the road.

We use a combination of

- Satellite dish and digital TV aerial. Both only good with a signal. The dish is 85cm so good for the SoF and across a swathe of Germany.

- We carry our home 4G router with us in the MH when away. Only good in the UK and when we can get a signal. Tbf it's EE and we have only been caught out once.

- Downloaded programmes on Netflix and BBC iPlayer.

- DVD's as a last resort back up.

Not only that but if you need to complain it seems Twitter or Facebook are the only ways, try finding a phone number or email for some of these faceless companies.

I've got almost the entire bl**dy contents of a second home scattered around the house since we emptied our old van out this last week!!! 😶‍🌫️😜😎

Need another van - quicker the better! - to decant them all back into... 😉 (y) 🚌
