They used to just for making phone calls
The reasons for smaller apertures are a bit complicated.
creating an extra F stop would double the size of the lens ( inverse square law)
With so much being packed into such a small space that would be difficult.
Also the newer phones have three lenses, making larger apertures even more problematic. Also the larger aperture normally leads to a loss of image quality, particularly at the edges. The computations involved in overcoming chromatic and spherical optical faults become more difficult. Hence why lenses with an extra f stop can cost three to four times the smaller lenses. I’m afraid it’s horses for courses mr iceman, but the image quality offered by phones is extraordinary. The new iPhone 14 pro has taken this to an even higher level. I got the chance to use one last week. After taking some photos I expanded them with my fingers on an iPad, with no loss of image quality. I then looked at them on my Mac on a 28 inch screen, and I was gobsmacked. So guess what Santa will be bringing me for Xmas.
You definitely have a talent, and taking and displaying good photos is so much easier than in the past.
