The future of motorhome TV and Data

I think we'll all end up on USB C, all mine are on it Liz is on the Apple Lightning thing.

I'm also using these instead of normal cables zero wear and tear on the phone socket and it keeps the dust out too & no tripping over cables etc.

Not so sure, the socket is too big for Apple or I think that’s why they don’t use it. Way to go for stuff has to be wireless charging surely. New car comes with it and my phone charges well even with non standard case on

I stopped buying DSLR cameras, my phone can pretty much do all I need with the exception of sunrises and sunsets.
Me to I will be buying the new iPhone 14 pro next year. The quality of the camera is way better than what I have on my iPhone 11. I do use a compact Panasonic, but only for telephoto shots. I sold all my bodies and lenses years ago. These were all taken with iPhones. Although there are benefits from using DSLR. They give you more control of depth of field, much better flash, and other benefits. But they are heavy with all the lenses and accessories when moving about.

Nice tit.

Did you do anything with the settings I can't be arsed nowadays, it takes the spontaneity out of it for me.

It’s a chaufinch, photographed in Madeira. We were doing the highest mountain in Madeira pico ruivo when I saw it looking for food. It let me get right up next to it. I just pointed and shot as you do with a phone.

I suppose in some ways we’re a unique bunch with unique requirements, but integration is what governments want.

Government has been on about delivering super fast broadband everywhere for as long as I can remember but have failed miserably. It's something I've worked on across rural areas for decades and it's still hopeless in a lot of places despite what they may claim. This kind of cooperation must surely be something governments should be pushing providers to do.

Yes Barry but things are much better now than years ago. We have found many areas with better coverage now. Planning regs were a problem, but it seems now they are being relaxed.

Not in my experience so much. Vodafone is maybe worse than EE out in the sticks perhaps although since I bought a second EE sim its been ok to be fair but we blew 40gb on that in no time at all and running two unlimited contracts just in case is expensive.

Barry 5 years ago my phone was useless on most parts of Arran, now I can use it anywhere on the Island.
I was surprised when we went to Torridon this year. Last year I got nothing not even with a wifi aerial.
This year I got two bars and G4.
I could list lots of places the same way.
When I go somewhere I log in my notes on the iPhone the TV signal, phone signal, and internet signal. When I go back I compare what it was like before.
But the issue seemed to be planning regs, and the government seem determined to force this though.
EE is best up here, but here's hoping that in the next few years things will improve.

Same here barring the couple of trusty Finepix Bridge cameras that I have for long exposure stuff deep in abandoned mines....

THOUGH my new Samsung S22 ultra now has a 30 second exposure setting when in Pro mode...
Just need a tripod mount to try it (probably still limited by the size of the lens opening though)

Sunsets it can do a decent job of though AND I don't have the pfaff when it comes to sharing.

The aperture obviously will limit exposure but the exposure latitude digital offers is massive in comparison to when we used film. I like the sunsets, but my personal preference is the first shot. The light illuminating the timber side on accentuating the texture of the timber. Great shots.

I find mine struggles with the reds and blues, we're south facing and high up here and get some really nice ones but they just don't look right

Very true BUT it's the size of the hole that let's the light in that's the big issue with phone cameras imho...
I just find these days I'm much more inclined to use my phone... Especially the new one.

So much convergence though on smartphones now...

Mines my phone
My sat nav
My work diagnostic
My camera
My music player
My access to the Internet etc
My diary
My notebook

I can't remember the last time I fired my laptop up.

I think it is outrageous that we still have so many black spots for internet & mobile phone access in the UK.

Loads of rural places still don't have any kind of decent standard broadband access. Dead spots all over Northumberland, for example, and I'm talking landline broadband here, not wifi etc.

Living back in fantasy Rees-Mogg-Land in some places, so we are! 🤣😛

They used to just for making phone calls :)

The reasons for smaller apertures are a bit complicated.
creating an extra F stop would double the size of the lens ( inverse square law)
With so much being packed into such a small space that would be difficult.
Also the newer phones have three lenses, making larger apertures even more problematic. Also the larger aperture normally leads to a loss of image quality, particularly at the edges. The computations involved in overcoming chromatic and spherical optical faults become more difficult. Hence why lenses with an extra f stop can cost three to four times the smaller lenses. I’m afraid it’s horses for courses mr iceman, but the image quality offered by phones is extraordinary. The new iPhone 14 pro has taken this to an even higher level. I got the chance to use one last week. After taking some photos I expanded them with my fingers on an iPad, with no loss of image quality. I then looked at them on my Mac on a 28 inch screen, and I was gobsmacked. So guess what Santa will be bringing me for Xmas. :)
You definitely have a talent, and taking and displaying good photos is so much easier than in the past.

Yep. Bills experience is different to mine. I'm stuck with Vodafone as it's the only one that works at home. Even then it's not brilliant. It's been like that for fifteen years since I switched from Orange so probably longer.

Teesdale, loads of rural Durham county and north Yorkshire are rubbish. You still can't even get actual old fashioned landline adsl broadband in some places let alone fibre.

Sounds like we are in a minority though who seem to be outraged about this lack of service.

I'm not taking ANY credit for any of the pictures.... The camera does the clever stuff.
Decent glass on a SLR is always king... BUT...
I've got several DSLR/Bridge cameras...
But they get used next to never these days...
Phone is ALWAYS in my pocket... And the best camera in the world is no use when it's at home.

The s22 ultra has 5 different lenses on the rear.... ;-)

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Starlink. I have been roaming all over the world now for well over ten years and I regard data as an essential service - just like gas and electric. All our TV is now via internet, and our monthly data bill is around 100gb if I am careful, and 300gb if truly unrestricted. For this I am willing to pay up to around £75 a month, but it is rarely that high. I run a router and a phone, and getting the best local deals is all part of the fun. It is occasionally frustrating, but sometimes surprising. Currently in Turkey which has ridiculously complicated deals, but I have ended up paying £15 for 100gb which is excellent value - but it took 3 days to sort out and needed the help of a local.
But Starlink will be the future, I would pay £100 a month for it now, but the Starlink RV equipment is still too bulky for my liking, but technology moves fast and I am expecting a small dome on the roof in the next couple of years, and the price will fall once the other constellations go up, can't wait to see the back of sim cards!
As for network reliability, I have found it so good that I can count the number of days with no internet in a year on my fingers, I can manage quite happily on 3G, and in some places 4G is so congested that switching to 3G is faster.
When in the EU I generally stick with UK roaming deals, it costs a bit more, but not having to use a VPN is worth the extra. On the way to Turkey we used a 3 sim via the Smarty network - it has the usual 12gb limit, but for £7 we could get unlimited and as it turned out unrestricted (fast) internet for 3 days, which is a theoretical and expensive £70 a month, but we found we didn't actually need it 24/7 so it came in well within budget. And now we are out of EU I just cancelled it, and can restart any time in the next 6 months, I know there are better deals, but we were so impressed with the constant high speed we were happy.
But the future is definitely in space! And the networks know it - they must be worried. I have a friend in France who is on Starlink fixed and he loves it.
