We are starting 2026 with a problem.

We are both suffering with (hopefully short term) medical problems that limit walking to about 10 minutes max. Additionally my treatment means no swimming (waterproof foot covering for showers but swimming is a no no.)

We don't fancy going away in the MoHo and staying inside drive 24/7.

My brain wave was heritage steam trains. Drive there; spend the day riding the rails; drive to pitch.
But (other than 1/2 term and we are at daughters that week} no trains until March.

We have e bikes but SWMBO doen't fancy cycling more tham a mile or so.

Any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

What other kinds of secondary transport are you willing to use or able to take? Scooter? Car? Quad bike? Trike? The most comfortable and actually probably easiest to sort would likely be a small toad on an A frame or trailer.

We have a small box trailer and ebikes and e trike, SWMBO not happy to use these.
She has a mobility scooter so we could always take it in turns to use that.
EV is too heavy to be a toad and would need fitting with brakes etc.
No other vehicles (gave the motorbike to son in law) .

But having written that has made me think to look for somewhere near a cycle path.

There are always Taxis and buses and hire cars but then what?
We love theatre but they are all still doing Panto or are "dark" (I've checked out about 30 theatres and nowt on).
Museums / Gardens / Towns all involve a lot of walking.
About the only NT we could cope with is "Mr Straw's House" and we did that a couple of months ago.
That also made me think, Some NT hire mobity scooters and some provide transportation. I'll research these

So thanks for the reply. it has made me think or a couple of ideas.

Another alternative is to stay at home and insult the rest of you but I fancied doing something different.

Can you not get two mobility scooters in the trailer? His and hers. I know you can get tandem ones but maybe not practical in shops etc.

There are a number of great railway journeys but you need a station where you can park the MH and get on a train and take a journey to somewhere interesting, then without too much walking get the train back to the MH.

North Yorkshire moors railways, Ffestinog, and Jacobite Steam train spring to mind, or just the regular service from Rannoch to Fort William, which runs all year as I sure others do

The other option is events where you can park at events near attractions. May not be your cup of tea but (for different reasons) I like motorsport events where I can park the MH near the circuit and amenities there are a number of circuits where this is easy to do, with a number of race types.

I’m sure there will be other events where you can park the MH close to the attraction.

Mobility scooters are great, but if you only need a short term solution that’s a bit excessive but scooters are available for hire at many events.

Forest campsite at Bedgelert is, only a short distance from the village...

And here is an on-site stop for the Welsh highland railway...

Onsite shop and bakery

Facilities are lovelly
Lots, of bird life etc.

Not cheap last time we stopped BUT a stunning forest type site

And then from Porthmadog you have the Ffestiniog railway too

Too long for my trailer, and not legal in the UK ......https://www.mobilitycompare.co.uk/mobility-scooters/2-seater-mobility-scooters

NYMR & Ffestinog no trains until march (except 1/2 term when we are away) Same for every other line I checked :(

Thanks anyway

- Some RSPB centres hire mobility scooters & as they often have cafes can offer a decent day out eg Old Moor
- Wildlife boat trips? eg Farne Islands; Plockton
- Short return ferry ride with lunch in the middle eg Mallaig to Armadale (or the opposite) - cheap as chips if you go as foot passengers; Sconser to Raasay
- Some lovely service train journeys (more comfortable than "heritage" trains too) eg Truro to Exeter; Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness or Wick
- Sight-seeing flight
- City bus tours

There’s a list of Trampers for hire on their website: https://tramper.co.uk/blog/2024/06/20/sites-using-tramper-buggies/

Quite a few have more than one. It might give you some ideas. I would always ring and book.

If you ask around you may find someone that has another mobility scooter you could borrow.

It’s worth ringing any tourist attraction that may involve quite a bit of walking. Some just use mobility scooters donated to the, Edinburgh Botanic Garden for example.

National Trust properties all seem to have mobility scooters available...book in advance. We used these a lot when taking mum out for a trip. Sutton Hoo, Sissinghurst, Calke Abbey, and one near Exmouth spring to mind.....Kew gardens too, afair.
We stopped in Portmadoc which is expensive ( but includes entry to village) but it is a lovely site right inside the village. Free access to the village even when closed to visitors mean you could maybe do short exploratory walks rather than try and do it all at once. Think they may have mobility options too, there was a "train" going round the site.

Sorry to say that Mr Straw's House is closed for its annual winter conservation clean and won't reopen until Thursday 5th March. ☹️

I don't know if you are a member of the Caravan and Motorhome Club, but their Broadway site backs onto the GWSR, with the train station near the site entrance.

I've had a look and they are operating a reduced timetable of trains in February and March (but not January).

The problem with steam railways in winter is that unless you keep the thing hot, you have to drain it to avoid frost damage.

For short trips, use Ubers.
We do.
The drivers are constantly monitored and aware of it.
They are cheaper if you travel off peak and get you reliably door to door.
You can specify that you want special needs friendly cars..
We no longer drive and it's a damn sight cheaper than having a motor parked up outside.
Tax, Mot, Insurance, Theft, Depreciation, Parking damage.
Not our problem.

I think you must be referring to Portmeirion village, which is a few miles from
Portmadoc.
As for NT properties, their flagship place is Stourhead, well worth a visit. As well as hire of trampers, they also have a guided tour of the extensive gardens via a buggy

I have difficulty walking for more than half an hour due to nerve issues after surgery on my groin. My wife has a really painful knee and back if she walkes too far, these blessings have come upon us over the last couple of years but we do still gently wander round National trust properties etc and we can also manage a very gentle stroll in gardens. We avoid steep slopes and stairs. I think the only advice I would give is that you should takes things very gently and don't try to push yourself, the train ride seems a good idea, just stay within your capabilities and remember wherever you walk to you have to walk back. Good luck.

Thanks for the words of support.

We are NT members but at the moment we are restricting our selves to those with Trampers.

I totally recommend visiting the NT .at Bodnant-Garden when the Llaburnum Arch-is in Bloom, an incredible experience.
