Side marker lights

I won,t say which Government dept I work for but they most definitely not part of a Mot test for a class4 in the UK . If it ain’t in the manual it can’t be failed .
Not here, many a time I had a fight with testers, won in the end, but sometimes for little things its not worth the agro to be honest.

Just off the phone to RV Autos ( no connection) regarding my mot that is due in a couple of months and guess what I have a side marker out, asked the question and YES they are included in the mot. Mentioned about this discussion HIS reply "aye there are a lot of Internet experts out there" had one of these twats here the other week telling me how to do my job, he was sent packing with a FAIL !

I suspect that's more down to his interpretation of the MOT test manual ...

The MOT test manual tests front and rear "END OUTLINE " marker lights (red to the rear/White to front )

BUT I'm still unable to find anything in the manual regarding testing of SIDE marker lights despite looking several times .

Very simple, if there they must work.

That's now three MOT testers who have apparently got it wrong, what's the odds ? Personally I would prefer to do what they are asking and have it sail through a MOT instead of arguing the toss with them at the end of the day they say pass or fail and with living rural taking into account travel to and from the mot station and having the test done that's half a day of my time.
Suppose the best solution is to call the station you get the test done at and clarify what they expect but why you would want to take it for a mot with a light not working is a different matter.

maybe in NI.

Side markers are not required for a Motorhome, so if one is not working and you think the MOT tester is not aware of the correct regulations (apparently some don't read the rules?), you could just put a bit of tape over the light so it is no longer visible and so not a side marker light anymore.

Wonder if you would get away with that on other things bald tyres ragged edge on rusty holes, eh NO !

That rule applies here, cover up and then not tested, toyota had to do this many years back with side winkers as they were above reg hight.

They are VALID test items. If you have to do something to stop a MOT tester who doesn't know the rules checking stuff he is not meant to, so be it

So what you are saying is out of the three testers mentioned they are all wrong and you are correct because you can't find it on Google ? 🤔

Perhaps the next time you see him you might ask him exactly where in the testing manual does it require side markers to work. I suspect he's either fallen foul of an acquired 'bad habit' or he's testing your van as class 7 or other goods vehicle (for which side markers are required if over 6m long). The thing about "internet experts" is that they are capable of working from first principles by referring to the actual legislation (e.g. @wildebus in post #41) and the MOT Inspection Manual -- which defines the items that must be tested.
I linked the passenger vehicle manual upthread. Here's a link to the HGV manual (PDF). Section 63 states that side marker lights are required for all vehicles over 6m long, viz:

The inspection of side marker lamps applies to all obligatory side marker lamps fitted to vehicles and trailers.
Side marker lamps must be fitted to:
• vehicles with an overall length exceeding 6m first used from 1 April 1991
• trailers with an overall length exceeding 6m manufactured from 1 October 1990
• trailers with an overall length exceeding 9.15m manufactured before 1 October 1990

However, even that says inspection only applies to obligatory side marker lights -- and they're not obligatory on passenger vehicles and so do not need to be inspected.

By the same logic, you are saying that a tester who fails your car because the rear screen heater doesn't work is correct even though that item isn't mentioned in the manual...

I can 100% say they are not in the class 4 MOT testing guide and are not part of the MOT . I have only worked for a well known Government road safety policing agency ( including the vetting and control of MOT garages ) for the last 25 years . All these MOT testers are wrong .

So the regulations change yearly for mots in the uk... mot testers have to do a refresher course every year, yes it's a exam. A mate does this job for a living. Only rear markers as well as front and rear lights are required on a class 4 test ( motorhome) the orange ones don't count... this was dec 2022.... we had a chat when I was under motorhome with him when he was testing it....
So I agree with BOTCANU

You obviously did not do your job well then. 🙄

However many MOT inspectors think an item is a failure, doesn't mean it is, when x250's first started getting tested many failed due to rear suspension, in the end a bulletin had to be issued to clarify that springs touching the rubber assistors wasn't a failure.

Correct.
apart from the bit about google - I don't use google.
And you do seem to associate with testers who don't know their axles from their exhausts :D
