I didn't Google it ....

I studied the MOT testers manual on the .gov page ....

And its not the first time I've questioned an mot testers interpretation of the 'rules'
 
If they still insist failing side marker lamps and this is your only issue ask for an appeal form against the issue of a VT 30 failure and DVSA will happily educate the VTS and tester.

So you are now confirming they are wrong?
Apart from incorrect failures being rectified, I think they should be more concerned about doing the job they get paid for properly.

maybe the FA would step in and tell the Referees to learn the rules of the game or get a new job?

In the case of an MOT tester, some clearly need retraining.

Be useful to post the addresses of the ones who have told you this duff info so we know to avoid them. Who knows what else they don't test properly?
 
I have had to pull them a few times over the years and got my way as they were wrong.

Not really ....

Testers don't have the final say ....

That's why there is a appeals process to appeal potentially incorrect test results .

Ask him to show us where it says in the official test manual that none working side markers on class 4 vehicles is a fail ...

I can't personally find it and would be interested to view it in black and white .

That won't be sorted out on the day though, can you explain why you wouldn't be willing to change a marker light and prefer to set off on a crusade trying to prove the tester wrong ?

I'm not the one trying to shame them, I'd prefer to sort the duff light rather than drive around with gaffer tape hiding a faulty light. And no I was not confirming they are wrong !

I didn't say I wouldn't fix a none working item of any description ....

BUT I don't see why my vehicle should fail on something that isn't part of the test ....

the point is not about fixing things, it is about FAILING things incorrectly.
And if they had pride in their work they would make sure they do their job correctly, not gleefully shout about "had one of these twats here the other week telling me how to do my job, he was sent packing with a FAIL"
What was the fail? "telling me I was wrong"? or was it an actual fail?
 
I have to say gang, I’ve been through TWO MOTs at TWO different large & busy garages, With the THIRD MOT due imminently.
One garage mentioned the Rear High level Red marker lights wasn’t working, (Until I pointed out that they are in fact ‘Reflectors’ & not lights 🤔.
The OTHER garage didn’t mention a thing 🤷🏻‍♂️…
So it will be interesting to see what this Third garage says!.

Interesting.
I thought the high-level end marker lights were a requirement when a vehicle is over a certain height, not over a certain width.

End-outline marker lamps

Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1991 that are wider than 2,100mm, excluding the side mirrors, must have their end-outline marker lamps inspected.

Class 3 vehicles do not need end-outline marker lamps.

There must be:
  • 2 white lamps visible from the front and positioned at windscreen upper edge level or higher
  • 2 red lamps visible from the rear and positioned as high as is practicable
The front and rear end outline marker lamps on each side can be combined in one lamp.

Always useful to know what is the MOT test requirements are so you can do your own pre-test checking (I always seem to forget to check the number plate lamps)
 
Mot guide class 3,4 +7 on Gov.UK. Everything that is tested . If it’s not in the guide , it ain’t part of the test , simples👍
