Selling motorhome via an Auction house ?

I have sold mine today to a dealer, so I advertised it on EBay and got over 2000 views, 46 watchers and not one bid, I did however get 4 people trying to but it “cheaply” after it finished. I then put it o Autotrader and had 3 bidders in the first 3 days plus 3 dealers, I cann’t blame people for trying to buy at trade prices as I’d do the same but I accepted £100 less from a dealer than the best offer from a private guy, my reasoning was that without dealerships we’d all be up £$%^ creek so if they make a few bob so well and good. If I used Autotrader again (I would) I wouldn’t choose the 60 day package I’d renew it myself every week because after a few days it gets lost in the masses,do it weekly it stays at the top of the list, also, the one viewer buggered up the seat wire under the seat so the airbag light is still on the dash but the dealer knew the solution as it’s a common problem. On another note have you seen how many fake adverts there are on ebay?,pages of them, I’m sick of reporting scammers on there.

Always Bank transfer for me too. And selling well, If it's a bike, then start up test etc is always done behind locked gates, if more than 2 people turn up then it's not going to happen. Test rides are fine AFTER the money transfer is in my wifes bag or bank 😀. Cars, always ask for their keys before we go anywhere. If it's a genuine buyer they don't have a problem with it. Check their insurance if they want to drive. I did think, what if they pull a knife on you during the test drive! and have decided that it's aggravated theft so covered by my insurance, and get out!! date and time stamp the receipt, don't want someone else's speeding ticket.
Am I going over the top, or just paranoid? Think that's it, oh no don't reveal your address just like that. A friend of mine had his quad racer stolen out of his garage, the day before the 'potential purchaser' was supposed to turn up! Have I missed anything?

When I bought my Vstrom 650 the other week the seller gave me a test ride but as he didnt want to let the bike out of his sight he came along as my pillion! 😬 I kept thinking he must really love this bike to trust a complete stranger with his life, especially me. :ROFLMAO: The guy that bought my BV350 didnt even want to ride it. Just bought it there and then, transferred the money a couple of days before he picked it up. Absolute doddle and free through FB Market place. I think I got lucky with both the sale and purchase.

I always take cash, I buy a money counter from Amazon do the deal and send it back, and I have an ultra violet note scanner somewhere.

But they always seem to turn up with stamped up bank money bags.
You need to check with your bank if they still take large amounts of cash...some will not do it anymore..they won't even transfer cash...

Just adding my own experiences here - we bought our first van via QuirkyCampers.com - mostly because we weren't looking for a coachbuild but more a home build "stealth" van conversion type and although their selection was minimal we liked the vans more than the usual ones we were seeing elsewhere, so were prepared to wait it out...

When we did find one that matched most points we exchanged a lot of email, got more photos, etc. and I arranged a visit with the intention to buy. (MOT, mechanicals, etc. seemed to check out OK - at least on paper) It was a days train ride to get there, (7am to 3pm) then I was offered the chance to drive it from the station to their home (about 20 minutes away), then had a good look over, out and in and bought it.

I arranged insurance on the way up - with the caveat I'd cancel if I didn't buy.

Although that then involved being in the middle of no-where in the highlands of Scotland with no mobile signal, an older mobile phone with a dodgy battery and Starling bank refusing to do the transfer until they were happy it was genuine... Fortunately their home Wi-Fi was fine and my wife was able to help via Jitsi (Video call alternative to Zoom) and she got the right runes for Starling. Which is OK, I guess, but it took over 2 hours, by which time it was properly dark (November). Road tax was bought online and off I went. Had to stop half way home but i'd taken a sleeping bag with me just in-case...

A bit of an adventure really, but with few exceptions, the van has now been in-use every week for at least 2 nights since then and I'm
sitting in it now just finished breakfast and will off to work later then home tonight. (My car blew-up the same week, so it's effectively now my "daily driver" too).

We'd looked on FB and eBay and Gumtree for a long time, but while the selection was more limited on QC I had a slightly better feeling about the people selling their vans via that site. Or maybe the name "Quirky" just appealed. If/When we come to sell this van then Quirky will be the first port of call for us.

I had a Vstrom 650 for years, 2004, took a plane up to Newcastle to buy it! Great bike, a BMW GS for the under 6 footers! Perfect 2 up so comfy. Rode it the 350 miles home in the afternoon.
(This doesn't help Phil remotely sell his MoHo 😉)
