Power steering problem

Had the same dilemma earlier this year and drove home, 70 miles or so from Barnoldswick to Walney, using fluid kindly donated by Eric (Saxonburg). Did it with two top ups of about 300ml a time. It might just get you to somewhere more accessible.

Hope you get sorted.

The issue he says is getting the parts and my garage that services the van said the same. I think it's a case of get it home and start raking round eBay assuming I know what I'm looking for.
there was mention on here a while back of a firm that makes replacement hyd hose you send them the old one they make a replacement

Well I've managed to get out of the CL to near the road but no recovery truck as yet. It's a narrow b Road so if they can get it on its going to block the road for sure.

Steering was ok at first then went stiff so I'm guessing it's spat out all the fluid again. Will have a look

Thanks. Biggest worry now is getting it recovered. The company with the bigger truck just called me. Firstly I have to get it to the main road. Not easy if you could see where I am and secondly they are already saying they might not get it on.

If that's the case I'm tempted to drive it home. 62 miles. I assume though this will knacker the pump?

Sorry for not updating the thread. Yes got back home safely. Had a mountain of other issues to face on our return which I wont bore you with but the van is back. I now however have the dilemma of what to do with it. Ideally it needs to go to a garage for assessment and hopefully repair but the issue I face now is our local garage just up the road probably cant fit it in their doors and I think they are reluctant to take it on. There are two possibilities I can try but neither of them will want it for long but I cant assess what parts I need until someone tells me what parts I need and they are found or fabricated. The other issue is how to get it to either of those garages. I am wondering if the recovery company will play ball and recover it onward to one of them. Otherwise its going to be a case of winging it and driving to one of them or paying to have it picked up. both of them are 17 and 22 miles away.

If it is just a burst hose then find a mobile mechanic to remove it, get a new one made up, refit it and top up with steering fluid.

I think its a steel high pressure pipe. The mechanic that came out said "they" were badly corroded and one was "pishing" out fluid. The good news is Ive managed to get my recovery company to agree to pick it up and take it to a garage of my choice within 20 miles of home. The bad news is that the one garage I know within 20 miles that have worked on it before cant fit it in for maybe two to three weeks. I know they are not keen on having it around long also. I guess thats what ill have to do though. There is no rush as far as I am concerned though. Its always the issue around here, getting anyone to look at it even is a nightmare.

High pressure hose or steel pipe .... it makes no difference, they can be made up by the likes of Pirtek (and others) on their premises. But please youurself how you do it.

Nearest one is 35 miles away on Teesside I think. That may be an option once its assessed and removed. Might be better if it was done in the garage in Darlington. I assume they will know about Pirtek. However Wilsons Motors where ill take it have been pretty good and knocking up parts themselves. Im not sure where I would start looking for a mobile mechanic. I went down this road once before and having asked around I found one guy on FB who was barely out of school who said he was "willing to give it a go". :D

As Jim says, get a mobile mechanic to remove any pipes that are corroded/ split then send them away to get new made. Once you have new pipes mobile mechanic will soon sort the job. Will save you hundreds of pounds to using a garage

Had just this a couple of years back on the two steel pipes on the rack itself. A local mobile lad came and removed the pipes and I had the replacements made at a local hydraulics firm. About £20 for that bit and £70 for the mechanic. I bought fluid myself and gave the left over bottle to the lad. The unions on the pipes were reused to avoid any chance of threads not matching. This is on a left hooker and I think the two pipes are available for RHD models.

Thats really helpful. Quite possibly all thats needed

I like the idea of a mobile mechanic but as said I think I will struggle here out in the sticks. Tractor mechanic maybe. I scored a blank last time apart from a young kid who wasnt even born when my van was built.

Will revisit it though. There are a few other jobs that want doing though which will require a ramp. Its a PIA to be honest as nobody wants to work on large motorhomes and especially those built in the last century. Not round here anyway.

How far away from Hull are you Barry? I know a garage that will work on it

Edit: Daisy Hill garage at Burstwick 👍

Tractor mechanic will do fine for that job. The lad who did mine didn't even pick the front end up, just squeezed under it. Worth a try I reckon.
