Power steering problem

Noticed this morning the steering was heavy. As we didn't have far to go to the next CL I kept going. About 22 miles, mainly in a straight line. Absolute nightmare to maneuver onto the CL. Took the lid off the power steering reservoir and it's virtually empty apart from a dreg. Looks like possible weeping on the two hoses below the reservoir.

It's a vintage 1996 Kontiki on a 2.5td Peugeot Boxer

This is our last stop on a long trip. I think we will head home (about 60-70 miles) on Monday. Should I top it up and hope for the best or just call breakdown and let them deal with it on Monday morning?

Top it up, We had a problem with the power steering once the pipe had burst but this was going through an oil cooler on a Merc sprinter chassis, so un-coupled the return and put back to the feed on the pump creating a loop by-passing the cooler worked a treat and never replaced the burst feed as I doubt we would have needed an oil cooler for steering in this country.

I presume it doesn't just dry up, there must be a leak. I'm thinking its pointless me messing about, I'll just call recovery.

I'll be honest, it's not something I have ever checked. Just assumed it was done at service which is over a year since now. Could have been leaking slowly for a while. I still think I'll call them out though. I'm in the middle of nowhere. Not sure where I would get the fluid anyway although I assume garages sell it. Probably needs special fluid made by druids in the 18th century anyway.

It just needs ATF ( automatic transmission fluid ) most garages will sell it

Update

Decided to go home (finally) today. Breakdown guy comes out, tops it up but discovered it's pishing out of a high pressure hose on the rack. Nothing he can do so awaiting a bigger truck to take us home :(

The issue he says is getting the parts and my garage that services the van said the same. I think it's a case of get it home and start raking round eBay assuming I know what I'm looking for.

When hose sorted fill with this, also handy after a few beers.

Thanks. Biggest worry now is getting it recovered. The company with the bigger truck just called me. Firstly I have to get it to the main road. Not easy if you could see where I am and secondly they are already saying they might not get it on.

If that's the case I'm tempted to drive it home. 62 miles. I assume though this will knacker the pump?

Probably knacker the pump and deposit a lot of metal particles in the steering rack, I would guess.

It will knacker the pump, driving it that far, unless it has a separate belt driving the pump, then you could remove that belt,
