Oil change

I usually do it after we've been driving for a few hours so it's well warmed up.
Good but oil does not open up to its extremly hot and working hard, hence a down the m way helps.
Do you remember the old oils, 20w winter and 40w summer, then gtx and duckhams arrived 20/50 with deturgents, many put it in old clogged up engines which soon bit the dust.
I remember my g father telling before thr war all engines required a re bore and crank grind at 30 th miles, now many engines will go round the clock 3//5 times.

Not sure that is 100% correct Trev.
Look up on the net, all there to see.
There is a chap on the seince of it all, very well explained for folk to understand, i love watching good stuff on the tube.
There was also tests on oil and fuel additives, slick 50 springs to mind.

That's just the ambient temp though, used for a guideline. Pretty sure the oil gets much hotter than 35C, by along way.
Of course (stupid bear)

Normal oil temperature depends upon the type of fuel used in the vehicle. For gasoline vehicles, this varies from around 230 to 260F (110-126.6°C). However, it is slightly lower for diesel-powered engines, at around 200-230F (93-110°C).

However, it is to be noted that these temperature measures mostly apply to conventional engine oils. Synthetic oils are capable of withstanding much higher temperatures, even up to 450F.

Which brings me to my old point, why do we require superdoper engines with squillions of HP for going to the shops/school runs as many do here.
My sisterinlaw has a top of the range rangerover, no kids and drives about 6 miles a day to work at 40 mph at best.

Loads of 4x4's outside our local primary schools Trev.

Never seen dirty tarmac let alone off-road.

Castrol GTX 10W40 semi and nowadays Castrol Ultraclean 10W40 in my X244, 2.8 HDi Peugeot since new and now happily gone over the 100,000 mile mark :)

Changed ever year along with Mann oil and fuel filters and not the 2 year / 20,000 miles service schedule.

It`s not a lot of money to keep it running nice and sweet (y)

Dont waste your money, the 5/40 is just fine, i have been at this game all my life, most important bit is give it a good thrashing once a mth to let the detugents glean the internals of the engine, if not using it for long trips or are a pussy footer change more often.
Thanks Trev but it is the mixing I was worried about. My thrashings are rare these days but not unknown.

Wont be a problem, been there had the T shirt, makers have tested to be sure, no one can know what oil type is or has been inside the engines, hence ok to go.

Totally agree with you Trev, no doubt the oil specialist will disagree.

I find it dificult to buy 10/40 semi, asda used to do it for £14 5ltrs, now double the price and 4ltr packs, my bus uses 8ltrs but my car just over 4, many new cars have smaller sumps.

Thanks again, but is it safe to mix the two, 5w30 and 5w40 oh and what I have and what I am looking at are both totally synthetic and same make.
I can see no reason why you can't mix these two
Some people say you can't, but are unable to come up with any reason why.
Like some people say you can't mix mineral and synthetic, but are unable to come up with any reason why
OIl manufacturers do it, and call it semi-synthetic.
I have mixed them and, as has been pointed out, they are going to mix anyway unless you flush the engine out multiple times with flushing oil. And who does that?
