I'm tentively looking around for possibilities for our next van.

I dunno Dave, maybe as there are no funds available right now, but I do like looking, so nothing lost.

Another van/cash is only part of the problem, not many proper automatics out there anyway in what would be our price range of sub £30k
What's the hangup for 'proper' automatic anyway? I didn't bother taking car test till after my accident so was 78 when I got a licence. Since then every vehicle I have had (except motorbikes and trikes) has been an automatic of one kind or another. I have had what I think you mean by proper (torque converters), CTX type and what used to be called semi-automatics, robotised manual.

The only one I would hesitate to get again would be a CTX type. They have probably changed since I got a new Fiesta with this box in the 90's (I think) but it would take a long test to convince me lol

I tried one of the first Merc sprint shifts to arrive at the dealers, I just don't like the idea, too complex and who's going to fix it, main dealer, who has parts, no one, as least with a slush box it's well understood, and well maintained no problems.

<snip>

Not bad LHD so I'd have to think about that aspect, but I've not seen one with such an early reg No.

<snip>
I've only had LHD motorhomes and had no issue with it. Ideal when touring Europe. In the UK, motorways and dual carriageways are not a problem and ditto for single-track roads. On two-lane roads, the higher driving position means that seeing past cars is seldom an issue, so it's really only overtaking vans/HGVs/buses (or passing them when parked) that is an issue, seldom encountered, but that's when the passenger comes into play; but I guess that it would also be possible to rig up a camera and monitor to cover that aspect.

If I was more younger and going to the EU a lot, then it would be a no-brainer Tom, but I'll maybe go once more, so RHD makes more sense to us, no back doors to open, and it's a manual, but otherwise I like the interior.

Can't see that in the Ebay link.

Can you show that in context so I can check I haven't got a fault, Thanks.
Was going to send picture to Pudsey just in case but , as you can see , poor quality .

Horses for courses I guess, I love my Sprintshift, I would rank it as one of the best 'auto' transmissions I have had so far.

A conventional auto gearbox is not a cheap fix Kev so don't go thinking one type will be cheaper or easier to find a fixer than another. That said in the 48 years I have been driving automatics I have only had one gearbox problem and that was on an E reg 520 BMW, a £500 run about. And that was a torque convertor type box. Don't know if it was a big problem or not, was old and slow so I sent to scrappy. I was at the time under the illusion that BMW 520's were rapit

I was using PC and that isn't displayed on the Ebay page.
It was on my phone
Thought it was more probably a typo but pointed out the EH (Edinburgh) postcode just in
I was using my phone .
Thought it most probably a typo but pointed the EH [Edinburgh] postcode just in case it was dodgy .
Was a tad puzzled people seemed to think I'd made it up or something . That would have been weird

I dares say for £500 it had not had any proper maintenance a for a very long while.

BMW auto box doesn't need servicing (😀😀), it just needs replacing when broken according to them. 😕. Pretty stand for most marques boxe's I think! If I keep my X5 that long it will be done @ 50K by an indi specialist that luckily we have in town.

"Sealed for life" is misleading:
BMW uses the term "sealed for life," but this generally refers to a lifespan of around 100,000 miles.

Yes my Sprinter gearbox shouldn't be touched or topped up unless it fails. It's a long time since any of my cars have had any option to top up the gearbox. The torque converter ones years ago used to have a dip stick, I remember them on my grands, capri, omega and vectors. Nothing newer tough I don't think

Were you anywhere near the Edinburgh postcode when you looked at it?

Some times it displays roughly how far it is from your location although 'over 60 miles' isn't very helpful.
