How do you get on without a garage?

There is something about being classified as a living van if you carry motorcycles, motor scooters etc but I think it would need reading in depth to clarify for an individual as it comes down to what’s needed for daily use I think. In Kevs case the scooter is a mobility scooter so no problem anyway.
As far as I recall reading, if you remove the motorbike/motor scooter from the van before presenting it for an MOT you are ok.

It seems ridiculous Neil that a motorcycle would change the classification of a vehicle if carried on board but a bicycle would not.
Are you mad???? Ask an insurance company something like that??? 😂😂😂

Hmm, on second thoughts.....

Nor me but I would remove before MOT lol
Ok to you get stopped along the road and not allowed to travel on untill load removed, or in the event of a crash and some small legal solicitor gets his mits on the case, could end up loosing ones home to make a private payout.
Must try and find out if N Ireland has a different law on the subject, prob impossable here mind you.

You worry too much Trev :p ;):)

So back in the day when we had money and a full licence we had a hymer S820 with all bells and whistles including a garage (and cocktail cabinet) .At 6 ton you’d think you could carry anything ,not so, from memory ,once my wife had loaded it we were 1/2 ton overweight, the moral is, if there’s room you’ll fill it. Our present 3.5 van conversion has about the same payload and no garage, do I miss it? Bloody right I do.

I remember the case Trev and yes the chap was reported by the (then) DVSA and it went to court but nobody seems to be able to find the outcome.

But the CCC and MCC advise that although the DVSA (VOSA) can report you for what in their view may be an offence it wouldn't stand up in a court of law. It would be interesting to hear an insurance companies view on this.

Looks like I may be getting VOSA/DVSA mixed up - it seems it is DVSA now.

I don’t believe that would happen Trev, I don’t know of any conviction for doing so but it is definitely not clear cut. Hence why I said an individual should read the relevant info in depth. It’s all to do with use if I remember correctly.

I do know where someone has been told they need classifying as a living van though. I also know where people have been given wrong information by MOT testing stations, in one case telling the DVLA they were wrong on a phone call.

This is advertised on a U.K. website:-

Doesn’t leave much room for anything else though. Even with a garage I favour the external rear mounted rack. Surely this has to be easier than attempting to put a scooter into a garage? All the strapping has to be anchored and fixed also remember.

But I guess whether you use a garage for scooter storage or not depends entirely on your lifestyle and storage needs.

PS we do carry a scooter on a rack as well as filling the garage up to its 150kg load limit. We weigh everything that goes in there with a luggage scale to make sure we don’t overload. The scooter on the back reduces the garage load limit from 200kg to 150kg. This garage load reduction is something to remember if you are carrying a load on a rear mounted rack, or towing.
I'd always thought that wt limits in garages/boots were to do with axle loading limits rather than body construction. Putting a load further back increases its force on the back axle rather than decreases it simply by applying the physical law of moments.

Or, with the the relevance of the Omnishambles approach from The Thick of It, DOSA? I can hear Nicola Murray telling the Press Conference that it's an exciting opportunity [followed by that nervous, vacuous mini-laugh] to introduce a DOSA VOSA ... :ROFLMAO: Enter Malcolm F Tucker, stage right ...

Steve

I manage without a garage meaning the great view that a rear lounge gives is possible. Being only 6m means ordinary car park spaces are possible. Overhead storage above the cab makes quite a difference and we are also able to carry a dismantled mobility scooter,

I've email'd the DVSA again Trev asking for a clarification on this (again) if I get no joy I will address it via my MP.
