Help desicion needed MH or caravan

I am thinking of changing from a motorhome to a caravan and car....anyone done that and regretted it I would appreciate some feedback before I make a mistake, hubby's not too keen I think but as we seem to be staying longer in one place and are thinking of seasonal pitches in various parts of the UK I think that having a MH means we have to at least travel for a bit every so often just to keep the engine in good condition plus all the MOT's, habitation checks,and the fact of leaving a more expensive rig laying idle on some site plus the added bonus of having a vehicle to travel round in' ie' a car as we dont have one at the mo and need to take the MH out to get provisions and stuff, we use buses mostly now

You are doing the job for yourself, without needing much imput from anyone
You are already listing the pros and cons for each. You must write them down, pros on the left, cons on the right, and then decide which are the most important to you. Each has its own benefits and drawbacks.
We went from caravan to motorhome, and have never regreted it...but then I think there is some gipsy in my soul, and feel the need to keep moving..and that is definitely much easier with a motorhome.
Take your time, and get it right for you..otherwise a very expensive exercise.

Think your on the wrong website for your answer, but all the same don't do it Not many people have used the C------n word on here, but whatever you decide, good luck.
Try more wilding, instead of sites, then your moving around a bit more, and making life easier and cheaper, also able to pick up supplies etc more easily.

If you only ever go on sites & stay for a reasonable length of time then the car caravan is probably the best solution for you. We see a lot of motorhomes now towing a car then parking the motorhome on a campsite & use the car for traveling around the area. This seems an expensive way of doing what you can do in a car caravan. Motorhoming isn't for everybody, I like to think that I can just take off in my motorhome without any more than a general idea where we are going, we always find somewhere to stop (very rarely on a campsite).

Only time will tell if you have made the right decision for you, weigh up all the options make your choice & get on with enjoying it.

Personally I hate caravans (for me to use that is) I think if I had to I would downsize to a smaller van & even go back to a tent before I'd consider towing a tin shed.

We went from Tent to Trailer Tent, to Caravan, back to Trailer tent, had a couple of VW Campers in between and are now on our 3rd Motorhome. As has been said - it is each to his own, but our personal regret is that we didnt get into Motorhoming sooner

We looked at Caravans when we moved from using a Trailer tent. The big factor for me is that I wanted to be able to just 'GO'. You can't do this with a Caravan you need to book in and know where you are going. Last August Bank Holiday is an example, Nic spent a whole day phoning around to try and find a campsite, she could not find one, we needed to have booked months in advance. In the end we just started the MH and went anyway figuring we would find a site when we got there and if not then a quiet country lane would do the job, thats just not possible with a Caravan

Also we want to tour which is just so expensive in France with a Caravan, we simply could not afford to be pulling a Caravan and using campsites every night. I think that pulling a loaded Caravan will take your fuel consumption above most MH's on top of that you have Campsite fees

Big downside for us of the MH was the transport problems when we got somewhere we want to stay, but we are learning the pleasures of using the bus, trains and our bikes

My view is that with a caravan you plan where & when to go, take to a site, unhitch the car then spend a week or two exploring the area coming back to your caravan every day. Motorhoming is just a journey, you often set off with some vauge idea where you are going, meet people on your route change your mind as the whim takes you & somehow end up back home with lost of happy memories. We find that on the road we are often influenced where we go by the people we meet on our travels. I'm not saying that you can't have a great time camping & caravaning but having been stuck on a site next to annoying neighbours who spoil your holiday makes me shudder (they probably thought the same about us).

That said getting away for a break in whatever you use is better than sitting at home moping.

got to be a m/home we have had caravans (sorry for the language ) and a m/home wins hands down every time in the end they work out cheaper .where would we be without our van

There seems to be a trend amongst motorhomers to consider caravaning as one step removed from Glue Sniffing. I dont agree. Its horses for courses. I think you have answered your own question. You want to stay in one place and even consider a seasonal pitch. Get a caravan then.

However. One of you will need a beard though and a pipe and on arrival at your campsite will have to spend 3 hours expanding your caravan with various awnings and safari tents and then another hour with chocks and a spirit level.

We all might have to change our opinion of Jeremy Clarkson shortly.

Fiat owners are trying to involve him and Top Gear in the problems they are having.

He does not like m/homes or caravans but he does not like big business ripping off customers either.

An average size motorhome can be driven more or less like a car,has near enough same mpg,and is an up and go vehicle,that can go nearly anywhere.If you cant be bothered to drive for the shopping etc,get it on the way ?or take pushbikes or even a small scooter/50cc moped ! on the back.You have one thing to look after,not 2,its also very stable at all speeds,it also reverses in a straight line Have you TOWED BEFORE,some cant do it !they buy a trailor or caravan and then are stumped,try it first,it can be a nightmare,also governed to 50 mph towing,its hassle having a caravan,but if your going to be that swear word STATIC then perhaps a caravan would be suitable ,paying all those site fees and the like......

I've used caravans and quite liked them so I'm not against caravans but would never swap one for a MH! A MH is so much more versatile. Even staying in one place for some time you don't need to run the engine that often. Once every two weeks maybe and you can even let it tick over for 20 mins without moving the vehicle. Though I think it would be advisable to move the vehicle every month so the clutch doesn't stick or the tyres get loaded in one place etc.

Not sure what kind of car you drive but if I get over 20mpg out of the Kontiki im pleased! My diesel Golf will do over 50mpg even when flogged down the M1 all day at 90mph!

I get 33-34 out of Vaux Movano MWB panel van on motorway with economy driving. The 2.5TD goes like **** off a shovel if you put your foot down, and beats many cars I've driven. I guess it's not the average coach built MH, but the average panel van MH.

Thats good MPG but like you say a big coach built is going to be rubbish. Ours is like a big brick! Same 2.5 Diesel Turbo but quick it isnt! Will do 80 though and a bit more if you push it.

I'm getting about 26mpg out of mine, Hint!!! Don't drive a Kontiki at 80mph
