Heating Costs Aboard for you ?.

Thanks for the info .
Electric blanket ? Don't you have a dog ?
Did u notice that the elec blanket label said do not immerse in water, then says remove cord before washing!?. Made in china - wondet if it'll catch fire like many do?

Soooo,
As some members might remember, I use to have a Multifuel burner in my Motorhome that I ABSOLUTELY loved, It Was BRILLIANT. Used pretty much daily for around 7 months of the year & SO SO SO good at keeping you warm.
You got Warm Walking to get the Wood or Coalnuts.
You got Warm Cutting the Wood.
You got warm Dragging the Wood back.
Then you got warm in front of the Stove smiling at your self reliance.
Cheap to run, Best ever.

High maintenance YEP, But a small price to pay.
Sadly there’s no place (Yet) for a Mulifuel stove on ‘Mo’ so it’s Diesel heating & Eletric blanket for me at the minute.
Because I move most days (Sometimes every other) I’ve got Ooodles of power for Electric Blanket & Daily bits n Bobs.
& it’s working out around £8 a week on diesel for the heater Hence the thread for comparison.

Hey guys,
So,,, I’ve been using my Cheap (£85) Chinese Deisel heater aboard on & off since I fitted it around 9mth ago.
Love it, Has run faultless throughout the Testing AND now the normal daily Habitation use.
I think I’ve also found the ‘Sweet Spot’ for the Living area I have to maintain a comfortable temperature so I can leave the Thurmostat alone. I just switch it on, Run it for 5-10 Hrs or whatever is needed then turn it off. All done 👍.

Now my unit is the kinda Stand alone unit, with it’s own Fuel tank & Pump in like a metal cabinet, it’s Remote Controlled so I can start & Stop it from the Cab, OR my Bed & has 1 outlet exactly where I want it. Now a NEGATIVE thing is that it hasn’t got a Fuel Gauge 🤔. So a Wooden Spatula got re-Purposed as a Dipstick. I’m just carful when I fry my Bacon 🤷🏻‍♂️
I run it on the 1.7htz setting & it consistently uses around 1lt of Desel for every 9 or 10 hours of Running time from the 4.5lt tank.

The 12v Power consumed is fair as even though it’s often on (Lately) for 10hrs or more at a time over night in these-14 & -15°C temperatures, I’ve never noticed drained Habitation battery, & I tend to move most days anyway so charged up to float every evening.
So say 1lt at £1,40 Devided by the 9/10hrs = around 14p/15p per hour.
🤔
Not Cheap, But Convenient for Instant Dry Heat.
Anyone else worked out their Heating Costs ?. Or am I the only one with Time on my hands🤔
Have you tried to source red diesel? Because you have a separate tank you should be able to use red, it's about 60p a liter depending on where you get it from.

Hi ya,
Yes it would dramatically lower the running costs.
Is Red diesel still a thing ?.

As I mentioned earlier I use to mix Red & Kerrosine together & run my boat heater on that for years.
I’ve not been able to find any suppliers of small amounts in this area, I thought it was all but done away with !.
It’s also about the ‘Convenience’ of just being able to fill up at a fuel garage.

Rules around red diesel are much tighter now, we have to sign a RDCO form, if it can run on heating oil it would be cheaper, but I guess you would struggle to find someone to sell you a small quantity.

28 sec heating oil burns clean, why red derv which is dirty, no dif than white, waste of money.

All the garages have it here at the pumps if you have a drum, even cheaper if someone with a large tankfull will sell you a drum or two.

I'm thinking of installing one of these diesel heaters but are they as cheap to run per hour as people claim? With some of the figures I've seen on running costs, it would be cheaper to heat my home with 3 or 4 of these instead of gas. With road diesel currently at £1.34 per litre and assuming the heater is running at full capacity all the time, what is the real consumption in litres per hour?

Hi ya Jomac
Take another look at my original opening post & I give the results for my installation & usage including some ave costs.

Still the same now 👍

But as Trev suggests,
If you have a house & run it on Kerosene bought in bulk you might save even more money.

Even cheaper run on kerosene/parrafin ...

Our main home heating is currently a drip feed oil fire ...

Generates a huge amount of heat for a very reasonable cost ...
'Apparantly' some folks mix in some waste oil too at around 50/50 mix to lower costs further .

Sooooo,
I topped my tank to the Brim again,
Knowing that I’ve got approximately 4.5lt of usable Fuel.
So 4.5lt @ £1.38 = £6.21
The Heater then ran 36hrs over multiple starts over the last week with me keeping a log for interest sake.

So I’m thinking that -
£6.21 worth of fuel Divided by the 36 hr running times = 0.18p ish per Hour.

(A bit more than last time & 0.15p, so am happy to settle at the 0.16p per hour as an AVERAGE)

Obviously these are not Exact Calibrated figures, it’s a rough but what I consider ’Fair’ guess.

🤔
So I’m thinking if I can get some Kerosene to mix in at say 50% I could get that down to around the 0.14p ish per hour or LESS.

I have fitted one of the all in one units in a small conservatory that Caz uses as a smoking room. Its a 5Kw heater but room is only small so its only ever on low so far apart from start up.

Its using approx 0.1 litres per hour at that so 10 hours per litre
