So that is monitoring the cab battery then Kev which was your main problem I believe?

I don't think I have a facility to check that short of sticking a plug in voltage tester in the cig charger although the Swift control panel shows the state of both batteries but its just sat in the green between 12v and 13v right now. Merl tested it though and it was charging the cab battery as well yesterday. Clever little device.
Yes mate, that's why I posted a link for you to get one, all we did was extend the wires Merlin soldered them but butt terminals would be fine, & connected it up for me in the fuse box under the dash right hand side, not a big job, it just sits on the dash in the corner by the screen, the Bluetooth range is off the charts, Merlin could pick it up from his kitchen window, and I was parked right in front of his van, I paced it out and got 42 steps so we reckon 30m +, I can take a picture of how it;s fitted for you or anyone who wanted to fit one, you need on of these to fit it into the fuse box though https://amzn.eu/d/65VvuSJ

Ali Express... I ordered a cooler for my new computer and was told it was shipped, it was in transit, it cleared customs, then it vanished, and it was not happening after all. It was bizarre to put it mildly. Once bitten, they can get stuffed.

To be fair, I've had stuff go missing, even from UK suppliers. It doesn't take much for the system to fail. Most stuff arrives on time and intact; if not, they send another out or refund you.

Now having first hand experience of Barry's system I think the biggest factor contributing to his low battery capacity when on solar (it performed better after a hook up charge) wasn't particularly the battery, solar panel or PWM charge controller. Although all of the above were arguably only borderline adequate the issue was the wiring between charge controller and battery. This was previously done with 0.75mm flex which was massively under sized and so thin and at over 2metres long was dropping over half a volt, the upshot being that with decent sun and an output of 5A the output of the controller saw a voltage of 14.5V and hence switched out of bulk charge mode but in reality the actual battery voltage was still less than 14V and was nowhere near ready to be going into absorption stage. The result is a much longer and drawn out charging process and essentially an undercharged battery.
Anyhoo, that's all academic because there's an extra panel, and extra battery, a Gizmott and an MPPT charge controller too, with the cable size now 10mm ( yep overkill WRT power loss but not WRT the controller communicating with the battery, see above) So it's sad too see the final demise of this thread but I reckon it's curtains folks. Maybe we should have an annual meet up on here just for old time's sake? Perhaps not eh🙄

I assume swift did not use 0.75mm cable on a solar set up.
His new Victron MPPT will improve things Merlin.

I didn't advertise it, but Merlin did mine too which was much more involved, but he & Kim are both stars.

He cleaned my roof and skylights, but negated to do the overcab bit :rolleyes: :rolleyes: , fitted my old spare 85w panel, removed the MPPT controller from where MCEA had fitted it against my wishes and refitted it as I had asked them to, he removed and re-used the cabling they had unnecessarily used and re-used some of that, fitted an isolation switch (yes we know a fuse would have done) which is a tidier method, fitted the wonderful Merlin Gizmott, and installed the the Bestek 300w inverter. All this is in the wardrobe now, where I can access it easily, he also fitted the BM6 battery monitor, sorted out my broken waste tank piep and valve, looks like a swinging dick now :D :D :D but it'll never break off again, he was going to fix the accident damage to my back bumper that i did in France, but it'd been whacked before and needed more work than I felt could be done there with what we had, so I will have to give that a bit of thought.

Not the easiest install as we had to work around existing stuff, I say we as I didn't just sit on my harris and observe, but I was limited in what I could do.

Above all else, I've been cahtting with Merlin on WhatsApp for a few weeks, his good humour help and advice have been most helpful along the way, but TBH, I don't need an excused to speak to him or Kim, the mirth abounds from both of them, salt of the earth just doesn't say enough, I'm not good with people, but with these two I am more than comfortable, I feel we'll be fast friends for many years to come.

Well safely back home although the A66 tried to catch me out by being gridlocked again but being a local hooligan I found my way around that.

Poor Merl. I had to wake him up this morning. Even then he smiled and was very jolly. If it had been the other way round I would have told him to fcuk off!! :LOL:

I can't see the Victron controller on the app though from the house but that is perhaps a good thing. Ill end up like Kev obsessing over apps, displays, voltages and machines that go ping!

There was some debate yesterday of what size the original panel is. Its hard to tell from the photos but its considerably larger than the 100w new one. Merl did some tests and thought it was maybe a 115w but I thought it might be a 140w just going on the difference in size.

What do you think? Angles of the photos are not great.

The good news is its still there 150 miles later :D

I believe that if your battery had gone to zero volts and killed the ECU and the cost was around £800 you might obsess for a while too, but once I know all is well I'll pretty much not bother, but it's good to know it's there and I'm sure it's a good thing to have, but it'll come into it's own come winter as the LB always had a good charge in it, I do have EHU (coz I put electric in my garage) if needed but I'm not sure I'll need it but at least I'll know and not have to rely on going to the van to see for sure, but you will :D :D

Oh yes Merl mentioned that to me what happened to you. Shocking Kev. I can understand your worry. I am pretty sure however I read in the manual somewhere that my Ducato (2015) supposedly shuts the cab battery down or something like that if it gets to a voltage nearing where it would not start the vehicle. I've never worried about it as its always been kept charged over winter somehow with that crappy old controller. They all should have something like that built in really.

I preferred old last century Hank the Tank. I just pulled off the negative battery lead under the bonnet when parked up for ages or over winter :D Modern vehicles will no doubt throw a hissy fit if you do that.
 
We think the temp dropping to minus 11.5 won't have helped it went to zero volts, I even bought a dumb charger and it was putting in 3amps over two days and still nowt but I did loads of testing with Merlin over the phone with a clamp.meter and a multimeter before it got recovered, then the battery recovered on its its own up to 11.7v and it started up easily so lord knows how, the ECU repairer said using a booster may have killed it but surely if you get them.out to a flat battery the first thing they'll do is put a booster pack on to get you going so I'm not accepting that.
 
He knows his electrics Merl! I am sure he wont mind me posting this (in fact I am sure I asked him if it was ok although I was a bit pissed at the time). The Valve amp he built himself and these fabulous 1959 speakers (I forget the name) are absolutely amazing. It was most interesting learning about all the valves and stuff. It sounded superb. Of course I got him to play some Bazza Bingo stuff and amazingly it didn't blow up. In fact I was feckin impressed how great it sounded. :D Photos are a bit crap but the two square boxes are the speakers and the amp is on the top left with all the valves on show. So clever.

Hi, you can get a tiny camera on a lead to fit on your phone from Temu for less than a tenner, I got one to follow a wire in the depths of the van. I used it to view the label on the under side of the solar panel which has the wattage details. Very handy piece of kit for the toolbox.

That could have been useful yesterday. We had to get a cable from the battery box in the back behind the bathroom, over the hidden wheel arch and up to the toilet flush switch and all done by feeding rods which just would not pop through. I was all for giving up but Merl just wouldn't and was determined and we got there in the end. A little camera to poke through would indeed be a great addition to a tool kit. In fact had we had one we could have attached it to the end of the flexi rod we were trying to poke through.
 
I bought one ages ago, not very good but much better than nothing, and I paid £20 for mine, so I'd not rate that one too much, but you never know.

Looked alright in the video but like most things that cost next to nothing. Probably crap. Having said that I tried Temu for the first time recently and bought various items and they have all been pretty good.
