Gas explosion??

It really astounds me how stupid some people are.
LPG is potentially one of the most dangerous substances most of us will ever handle. If handled correctly it poses little risk, but looking at what’s being sold online really needs sorting out. It’s time to make the sale of such stuff illegal, and the use of this “equipment” should carry heavy fines, and driving bans.

The problem here is LPG will harm others who have done nothing wrong, this incident left a member of Morrisons staff with burns. IF anything was done here which does not comply with gas regs, this person should be made to pay damages to Morrisons, and the injured person. IF they have breached gas regs they have destroyed their van, injured a member of staff, damaged the forecourt, and forced the closure of the forecourt for a period of time. This will lead to loss of business, and an inconvenience for all those who wished to use this garage.

Gas in its many forms (not just LPG) is dangerous stuff, I have seen homes destroyed by it, and people being killed and injured, don’t mess with this stuff, because if things go wrong, the consequences can and have been devastating.
My thoughts exactly.
I personally think that if after investigating the incident they have found to have been filling non refillable bottles. I hope the company that owns the bottles totally bankrupts them. Then Morrisons can have a go as well.
The sooner idiots start to get punished the better. Ignorance is not a defence.

All that will probably happen is we get some sob story and Morrisons will be to blame for not stopping him/her.

Not sure how true seen a few posts on fb suggesting he was filling a standard gas bottle with an adapter no mention of this in the article. I do hope he was not as it will be another nail in the coffin for us with genuine refillable bottles.

One of my local LPG suppliers, (Midlands Gas), are refilling their own bottles. I assume they will use the standard diy type filler for this. I think if bottle is empty and all safety instructions are followed all should be OK. It's only when someone doesn't follow the rules or is unfamiliar with the correct filling that accidents happen. Probably best not to let any humans fill them, get an AI robot to do it, lol.

More to do with 80% fill rule.

They have had their gas licenses revoked in the past. Perhaps they are heading for another revocation.

no 1 / make sure bottle is empty
no 2 / check tare weight on collar of bottle
no 3 / weigh bottle
no 4 / with bottle valve open connect pump
no 5 / fill to ratio 2 ltrs per kg ie 6kg holds 12ltrs ( it’s actually 0.51 kg /ltr )
no 6 / turn of bottle valve
no 7 / disconnect pump ( there will be small escape as pressure equalises)
no 8 / weigh bottle to check fill
if the above is not clear to you do not do it you could kill yourself & some other poor innocent maybe me !

Even if it is clear please don’t do it, you may get us all banned, even from refilling legitimate refillable bottles.

And this here my friends is the problem.

I don’t know midland gas but I’m assuming they are an accredited gas company and will have the specialist equipment required to fill a gas bottle to the correct amount no matter how much is in it to start.
Assuming they will use a diy fitting and it should be ok if they follow the rules. Really. 🤷‍♀️
Unfamiliar with the correct filling is not an option.

I’ve spent over 20 years gas safe registered. I now have an ADR license as well and deliver LPG in an 18 t lorry to domestic and commercial for a major company.
Some people just don’t get it.

I think they think it’s all down to luck. It isn’t.

Due to the high levels of training. We are looking at situations you’ve never even thought about
In any day we can safely deliver 15000 litres to numerous locations. Efficiently and Safely all because of training following the procedure and the correct equipment. We also know what to do in the event of an emergency.

I have refillable bottles in my motorhome. And have never had a problem unfortunately I don’t think we will be using them for much longer because of people who think it should be ok if they follow the rules they have never seen with a diy bit of kit.
Think about it!

Any person filling a non refillable bottle needs to be hit with a minimum £5k fine for each regulation they have broken. I can assure you that you can never just break 1 regulation
Sorry for the rant but it needs to be said. Don’t mess with LPG it’s not just your life at risk.

I know you said that you did this as a job at a local gas plant.
What you have done here by posting a process is encouraging people to follow your personal advice on filling a non refillable bottle. That I’m sure could lead to some legal issues with the company that owns the bottles.

Your choice but I would advise removing your post. It might come back to bite you.

As others have said it we do not know if this was a diy fill or not. And have seen in this thread people mention how to do it safely. The thing is especially on fb the same people who wonder why there ninja cookers and other 240v stuff won't work when there not on ehu. Are some of the people taking this info in and buying these adapters after reading someone slag calor prices off and show and how they get cheap gas.

Mike, on an average year we spend about 70-80 nights in our van all seasons. My annual spend on Calor gas will be around £150, how much could I save, and at what risk. IF this person has breached regs and created this mess (please note IF) then any small savings they thought they would make are now history. Why are some so miserable, so miserable they are willing to risk their lives and others to save a few quid, utter madness.

I think the answer is “stupid”. Unfortunately stupid doesn’t mean they can’t read just that they aren’t clever enough to understand. So best not to give out information or sell products that can be dangerous because it might well be read and bought by stupid people.

i use my van for approx 6 months of the year so 80 kgs or about £640 by calor refills or £140 refillable , i now have 2x gasit 11kg also 2 x 6kg calorlite the calorlites are used for bbq cadac etc the only real difference between filling a gasit type refillable bottle and a calor type bottle is the non return valve AND the 80% cut off valve these are the parts that need competence to override

13kg Calor currently £46 80kg cost £282
6kg Calor currently £27 80kg. £360
combination of both I use one of each £321

They are very significant differences which make the bottles safe for filling by the general public.
The price difference shown on post 55 for 80kg of Calor is way wrong.
It does not cost £640 for 80kg of Calor.
Using 13kg cylinders it’s £46 a refill total £282
Using 6kg cylinders at £27 a refill it’s £360
And if like me you use both it’s £321.
No one is arguing that refillable cylinders are cheaper.
But not by the margin shown on post 55.

1 Why should it be empty? I usually have some left when I refill mine.
(I certainly wouldn't recommend "venting off" gas in an uncontrolled manner.)

4 Because my bottle is not empty I connect to the pump with the bottle valve closed! THEN open the bottle valve.
(I have noted that when I have refilled an empty bottle there is usually a leakage around the nozzle for a few seconds. I assume that the seals only function when there is some "back pressure", so filling an empty bottle I would regard as more dangerous.)
