Just received an email from Popit advising of reduction in EU roaming allowances effective 01/10/2024 imposed by their connectivity partner:

  • 1GB plan: 512MB for EU roaming
  • 3GB plan: 768MB for EU roaming
  • 10GB plan: 2.5GB for EU roaming
  • 20GB plan: 7.5GB for EU roaming
  • 100GB plan: 25GB for EU roaming
Another option bites the dust!

Yep, I've got an IQ mobile which I used in France earlier this year - 100Gb for £20. Just checked their site and now it's 100Gb UK but only 25Gb EU.
Not such a good deal now so I may not renew the annual subscription.

All thanks to the big 'B'.

I'm currently in France with a IQ Go 100gb about to run out on 27/09 and already purchased 100gb data for October, waiting for a response as to whether they are going to honour the original deal as it was purchased 2 weeks ago. Any suggestions for alternatives ...... is Reglo still worth a look?

Réglo Mobile is certainly what I will be checking out before my next trip. OK in the past except that they prohibit use in a mobile router so I have to use an old phone as a hotspot, which is less than ideal.

Had a very prompt response from IQ. Basically they are honouring any data bundles purchased before today on the original terms, or they will issue a refund and reimburse any unused portion of the £20 annual fee on a pro rata basis. They seem genuinely dismayed by the operators change and are now working with them to try and come up with an improved offer over the standard 25gb euro usage. So hopefully that sorts us for the current French trip and I'll wait and see what the revised deal looks like.

Is that the actual cause ?
Just bought a Tiekom sim , Think I found out about it from barryd post .
Was in process of cancelling popit . Shame really helpful , responsive company

Do let us know how you get on with the Tiekom sim. I think its the only game in town now for us for next year. Not ideal though as I bet it wont allow us to stream UK channels like a UK sim will. Not that this is major issue for me at least. Got a big dish anyway but I'd gladly dump that as well.

I have seen this discussed elsewhere.

Apparently they will honour existing purchases.

I was going to use IQ for my Winter trip but will likely revert to Reglo given I've still got an active SIM.

I remember you mentioning about the router issue before. I'm about to buy a router. Whereabouts in their Ts & Cs do they mention router usage?

This is potentially an option. Their SIMs will work in a router according to information I found on the internet.

The snag is SIMs are ordered online so you'd need a delivery address in France.

Will do . Think I've tried all the options so far . Tiekom , not the cheapest , but seems to fit the bill .
I do have a VPN which doesn't always work . I subscribe to my football team's channel which requires a foreign sim.
I can also use my generous allowance from Vodafone !

It seems to me that all of the UK based sim card providers, who found a way around EU limited rulings have had to pull their products.

Therefore, would the answer be to buy local data sim cards in which ever European country you are in?
I’ll be limited to the 12.5 gb of my 40gb Smarty. Probably enough for me to get through France.
So I’d be looking for card to put n my router, while in Spain and Portugal
.I’d be more than happy to to hear any recommendations 👍

You could use ID mobile £8 per month for 25mb and 25mb abroad at the moment.

Possibly back to local Sims and a VPN.....Portugal Vodafone Go sim still is unlimited data for, I think, 30€ for thirty days , renewable up to 90 days. But doesn't work in Spain. We tend to use our 25gb allowance from O2 phone plus a id mobile 25gb allowance when travelling through Spain and France.

I've been using a Reglo SIM in my router for the last 6 months to monitor the CCTV and in our House when there. I couldn't find T&C blocking it.
"Le Client s’interdit d’insérer la Carte RM dans tout autre équipement qu’un terminal mobile, notamment des boîtiers radio ou tout autre équipement permettant des communications de type « machine to machine », ainsi que d’utiliser la Carte RM en vue de modifier l’acheminement de communications électroniques ou d’émettre en masse et automatiquement des communications (vocales, SMS / MMS ou Internet)."

The first time that I purchased a Réglo Mobile SIM, it worked briefly in my (Teltonika) router and then ceased working. I tried it in a phone, but had to get it re-enabled for it to work again. I then never attempted to use it in the router, on the assumption that use in the router was what had caused the issue.

What router do you use?

Huawei, can't remember what model. Many 2nd home owners in France use Reglo for this I believe. Saving affixed broadband connection. Though some Fr. Sims providers apparently block CCTV use. Mines okay 👍.

Not sure that french gobbledegook actually includes Routers
