Hi everyone,

I have an Electrolux RM 4290/ 4291 in my motorhome, which has given up the ghost.

Does anyone know which other fridges would allow me to use the existing openings/ external grilles?

Alternatively, would anyone know of a good repair place in the Glasgow or West of Scotland area, by any chance?

Thanks,

Ronnie

Just make it’s level before you chuck it out. Many a fridge been changed because parked on a slope. Take it out and turn it upside down, try again. Gas jets get blocked, with rust from the inside of the pipes as well.

every single thing that can possibly go wrong with a fridge has probably happened to one or more of our members, and been fixed where possible by one or more of our members' advice . the combined knowledge on here is astounding .
saying that ,i've no idea what's up with yours !

Unfortunately my Dometic has stopped on gas. Company has looked at pcb and said they cant repair so now looking at options. Searched ebay and at least Jacksons had in stock but no chance. Doing homework for alternative ;

The 7 series Fridge/ Freezers vary in control systems. Some are fully automatic and some have a switch to also manually select Gas, 240 or 12 volt operation. I had a problem with my 7 series on Gas but a new burner unit and cleaning the Flue fully cured the problem and saved me £2.5K for a new Fridge/Freezer.
If yours has the manual 4 position switch, I am sure that a half decent electrician can totally bypass the the auto selection function. I would try replacing the PCB first and doing what I did regarding burner unit and flue. If the company that checked the PCB did not specify exactly what the fault(s) is/were then I would suspect they were talking bollocks.

To be fair I did not ask specifically what the fault was other than he was unable to repair he was honest. I had the water heater pcb repaired by him and was very satisfied.
Can you advise of a company that you are aware of who could repair and not "talk bollocks"?

Can you recommend a fride? I have an inverter.
I have one of the small sealed units which will run 24 hrs 180 amp hrs batts on a smart soft start inverter, these fridges cost about £75 new, we got ours from facebook market place unboxed but not used for £50

I thank you for the very informative reply that has decided me on which way to go. Can I assume that you have no rear ventilatiom resulting on internal grills? Now on the lookout for a low powered 240v compressor fridge and hope I can get the same bargain.

Hamish

I went the same way after getting fed up with wasting gas
The fridges temperamental ways (level/wind in wrong direction)
And having to empty the stuff out of it when we get home before heading off again a short while after.

Bought a cheap cheerful lowish consumption fridge via amazon @£100 (I was stuck on size and colour)
And a victron 12/800 inverter (I've already got other victron stuff so it made sense for it to tie in)
Already had 400w solar on the roof and 3 x 110ah AGM batteries.

A complete game changer

I take it that you must be not married?

I say that because your Wife is going to be as mad as a box of Frogs when she finds out that the very large Fridge/Freezer has been replaced with a toy one. :D

We discussed what we put in the fridge and what actually needs to be kept very cool and it is little. As we are normally within reach of shops fresh meats etc can be purchased and consumed on the day. I am trying to recall how we camped with my parents 70 odd years ago and we managed with a cool box that I think water was added to the top and the evaparation kept it cool.
As an aside, we camped on a dairy farm and mother took us, twins, to get milk from the dairy, where we witnessed a cow being milked. On return with a jug of milk we would not touch it. Crafty mother, unbenown to us, put some in an empty milk bottle and that was ok.
We are all too pampered nowdays.
