Dometic fridge freezer door broken hinges.

Dometic woes, hinge prices rediculous! I think the whole design is iffy, I've replaced a few and like tezza I've araldited stainless steel plates to strengthen them, the spring in these hinges is very strong, so much so on closer inspection I found stress cracks starting in the freezer box where they are attached, I've overcome this problem by removing the spring from the hinge and fitting a couple of magnetic catches, a much better seal and no more worries about snapping hinges.

I like the spring removal idea, but I'm beyond fitting the magnets, and it wouldn't work for us.

I may look at a wedge or something which would hold the flap closed when the fridge door is closed.

I've just been looking at the setup for the bloody flap, the flap itself is well engineered I think, but the part that fastens to the underside of the freezer box is just one screw and this is the weak point and snaps right there.

The other side fits into a perfect slot with two screws just keeping it in place under no strain at all, It makes me wonder if it was designed to fail so we keep buying more hinges, It could be that overbending isn't the problem but over stressing a weak point with a over strong spring, every time you open the freezer door

The spring itself is way overstrong and over-bent by about 40° or so.

The break point is inline with the door edge too.

I couldn't find a door stay to suite, but a decent size tie wrap with a couple of screw holes would do and they are very tough too.

The hinge halves have finally arrived; they should have been here over a week ago. They had to send some more. I bet the others turn up now.

Two issues.

1, The pin hole is too small, so that needs a round file or drilling out.

2, The actual movement is less than the original, so where before it would drop below flat, this will not allow it to go flat at all, only a couple of degrees, but it will make a difference.

Maximum straightness with new hinge.

With original.

I'm not sure of the degrees, but that is a massive difference
