Cheek by jowel in Tenerife

To the north of Teide are the laurel forests which are totally different to the landscapes in the south, they have many narrow winding roads, not all being tarmacked, and can be a challenge in a 2wd hire car in places.

Yes, but many tourists arrive straight from the beaches.
Nobody tells them it might be a little cooler up there.
Bless 'em.
This time of the year , you should bring warm clothes, just in case...... And a hipflask.

You would think the snow on the top of it would be a clue. I remember us driving up Mount Olympus once in Cyprus in late March which is only half the height of Teide and it was sunbathing pool weather on the coast and we got out at the top and had a snowball fight. :D

A friend of mine ( 'little kenny' RIP ), spent many years taking holidays on Tenerife, only once did he venture up Teide, him and his wife where taken up to base of Teide in a open top Vitara, they both 'froze' as they where only wearing light clothing.

We went up Olympus around easter time in a Vitara, as you say snow at the top, some people where sking, went down via a little used track, when we got back down to a flatter area nearly got taken out by a FV430 on exercises, we where escorted to a check point.

I’ve been to Tenerife 30+ times over the years only went up mount Teide once it is a stunning moon like landscape but it reaks of sulphur like rotten eggs from the volcano. They filmed the original Planet of the Apes and some Star Wars on mount Tieide think some Rambo stuff too.

long time back I remember driving up and I didn't really think it through and forgot to pack any warmer clothing ... getting a bit nippy as we got higher so turned around and headed back to the beach :)
I have the pics to prove, need to look them out of me shorts and a T, wait for it, jesus type sandals. I was a ruffie tuffie diver back then, when cold was something that was an inconvenience.

There you go. Coming back over from the west side of Tenerife in February 2017. The spot was mobbed with folk skiing and sledging. Still toasty on the coast though.

Cheers

I love tenerife and stay in Puerto de la Cruz. Far fewer tourists . I noticed several vans in the car parks but never managed to chat to anyone. I did wonder about the price of the ferry as I knew there were none from Morocco, which is strange. I am not sure I would bother going all that way when Spain and Morocco are more easily available ( for a European). Easier to fly and stay in a cheap hotel and pootle round on the bus.

It’s 14c in Malaga right now 23c in Tenerife, and it’s far easier to fly from Scotland to Tenerife than Morocco. (If at all possible) We actually prefer Madeira, where we are going in March, but I have always wanted to go to the highest mountain here. So decided to do so for our 70th birthdays.

Yes there is a big difference between Tenerife and mainland Spain or anywhere in mainland Europe in the winter when it comes to climate I reckon. I only ever went to the Canaries in winter and the big difference apart from warmer day time temperatures is the night time temperatures. You can go out on the town in shorts and a T shirts in winter in Tenerife. Well maybe not up mount Teide. :D

Up until a few months ago my sister and brother in law owned a beautiful Villa in a prime spot overlooking the sea near Costa Adeje. It is truly stunning including large swimming pool etc. etc. and I was given the chance to go out there anytime I liked and planned to do so this year.

Sadly my brother in law now has serious health issues and they can no longer go there and so have sold it. They used to go at least 6 times a year and loved Tenerife and I was looking forward to spending some time out there with them. I'm not a Sun worshipper but having seen the pictures and heard all the stories I think I would have enjoyed it. Many of my friends often visit Tenerife so maybe one day I will make the trip.

It was Adeje I went to on my own a few years back. Well ten years back now I think about it. Friend had a really nice time share (yeah I know, absolute con) in a five star complex. He couldn't make it so offered it to me FOC. Michelle didn't wanted to go and needed to do the tax and VAT stuff so I went on my own for a week. :D Cost me £150 for the flight and beer money. That was it. :D Nice spot. I think. :D Took me another week to recover.

I also went for my 70th, last year. I stayed in an old hotel in the old part of town. I had a week on my own then my family joined me for 4 days. I had a marvellous time and I am sure you will too. The capital city is very nice. I would just avoid Playa des Americas.
By the way you can't fly from tenerife to Morocco. I took the ferry to grand canaria then flew from there to Agadire. I then did a four week back pack trip. It was great.

Madeira is fine. Unless it's windy at the airport.. A white knuckle ride.
Talking of which, you've got to try the basket sledge ride down the hill-top above Funchal..
If it's not been banned by the 'elf and Safety brigade.

Been going to Madeira for years done the basket ride and climbed its tallest mountain

Dull one Bill, hopefully you can squeeze another visit with favourable weather for cable cars to run before you return home? The National Park is like a lunar landscape, and fascinating experience.

If you ever find yourselves visiting Lanzarote, Timanfaya National Park is a must too.
In Lanzarote now but not doing any of the tourist sites this time, it’s hissing it down anyhoo.

I’d advise buying the bundled tickets online if you’re wanting to see the caves, gardens and Timanfaya. Not a big island but plenty of history and natural history to go at. Dead easy to drive round and a car for a week cost us about £80. There’s a surprising amount of agriculture and viniculture for what at first sight is just a barren lump of rock. The wine producing area looks like growing vines on the moon and the old towns like Haria and Teguise are worth a butchers.

The guided tour of the observatories on Tenerife is good value if you get the chance.

Cheers
