Arghhhhh! Broken the bed again!!

So I visited my motorhome repair guy this morning. He is of the opinion that it would be best to order an original runner and put matching wooden supports underneath. I think he also thought the supporting plywood bench seat wood would not be good enough to support a wooden replacement with no vertical load like the runners have even if it was beefed up a bit. Looking at it there isnt much you can beef up as its very thin and quite short as there is a massive gap in it for the door that comes down into the locker below.

Short of any other way of sorting it I don't see what I can do and will have to follow his guidance.

As the man on site who has a clue, I'd go with his suggestion and stop shagging so much.

Just saying. even though I think it's more likely you're just a heavy-handed wanker :D :D

Dare I say rubbish? Whatever happened to putting braces on the inside of the seat to spread the load?

Just to expand a bit: I have seen reports of this type of supports breaking on a few new motorhomes, didn't the Rucks have a similar problem on one of theirs? If you were thinking of swapping vans in the next couple of years then you may want to go with the repairer just for keeping it original. As you intend keeping the van for the next 10 to 15 years it seems short sighted to go for an option which isn't fit for purpose

Hmm, so basically exactly what I suggest 500 pages ago🥱🥱
(Slight exaggeration)
If you're struggling fitting any new support under the replacement rail here's what I'd do:
Reinforce the new plastic rails by filling the hollow sections similar to what canalsman suggested but instead of using sika use anchor resin and a continuous length of threaded rod. I don't think you'd be able to pump resin down the whole length but a hole drilled every 150mm ISH would enable you to completely fill the section with resin.

Thanks but I reckon I have no choice but to go with what is suggested. I have no means of doing it myself and in the absence of finding anyone else local I would trust what else can I do? I do intend to keep the van for at least a decade though.

There are many different ways to do it Barry, just tell him it needs to support a rampaging hephalump.

its only a piece of ply inside and the batten outside Barry, glue and screw together with original board sandwhiched between

Perhaps you need Skorva from Ikea 1 bar with 2 brackets would support the middle of the bed but if your bed if permanent use three with Luroy slats between! I am doing a new conversion and this is what I will use, I guarantee the van suspension will collapse before the bed LOL!

The problem is expecting a 10x50mm piece of ply to support 2o or more stone.

Some vans have the slats come from either side with legs on each one so there is loads of support, the down side is access under each side for storage is more awkward.

This chap is using a similar idea but only for one side , I've seen them where there are two and the pull together

Shame you're not handy as it'd be a good DIY job.

Can't see how either of those would work in my van Kev but unless you are a joiner its pointless anyway. I haven't ordered the supports yet. I think ill try and get a second opinion from a local joiner who did all our doors and windows if I can pin him down.

So an update. For a couple of weeks now I have been conversing by email with a very helpful young lady at Catterick Caravans and she has managed to get me 4.5 metres of the correct runners, brand new for fifty quid!! Weeks ago I found the part she found from swift but the image was wrong so discounted it. She did some digging and seemed certain it was correct so I went ahead and ordered. Been in today to pick them up. All cut to my requirements and the correct part!

So now I have tons of spare and an easy way to buy more.

So I reckon there is no point in farting about now I have a cheap source of the correct part. Considering I nearly coughed up £260 for two cut pieces from that other supplier I reckon I'm happy with that.
