Are you breaking the law ?

Interesting that Skoda warned: "Portugal has the strictest approach: you're not even allowed to own a dashcam! So you can expect the police to give you a hard time even if they find a dashcam on a seat in your car, in the glove compartment or in the boot."

The day will eventually arrive when dash cams come as standard with all new car sales within Europe.

Portugal and those other countries banning them is just pure stupid!

Probably true, but who will have access to recordings or even have the copyright?

Esp. as some sources say there is no law on owning a dashcam, just a law of recording.

Dash cam, well forward facing cam, is a factory fit in my car and i don't think i can turn it off. But it only saves recording if G sensor activates or one manually taps the record button.

Most manufacturers 'avoid them like the plague', due to European GDPR.

But seriously..Many use smartphones to navigate. There are apps that can use this camera...so effectively a dash cam !

Also in some countries the police ask for suitable footage to help solve crimes and not just motoring. offences !

Had a brief skim through the article titles on the Yorkshire Live website after looking at the dash cam piece and it seems they are pretty damn good at writing clickbait headlines… 👍 😉 🙃

Anything which helps to convict people who reckon the M6 is Brands Hatch, has to be a good thing in my opinion. Some of the driving I have witnessed in my time is nothing short of criminal. If I had my way driving without a fully operational dash cam would be a criminal act, they should be mandatory. Possibly if those who drive like idiots risking other people’s lives, just may think twice if they were forced to fit dash cams. If fitting a working dash cam was mandatory, and saved lives, I can see no reason for not having one. Of course if you have something to hide, or don’t want your driving to be recorded, it’s a different matter. Why any country would ban something that can help save lives and convict criminals eludes me.
