Glencoe facilities being abused

I posted about this elsewhere a while ago, but had good talks with locals all the way up the east coast from Inverness up to John O'Groats and along to Thurso when we went to Orkney last year.

They had plenty of tales to tell about the "staycationers" during lockdown, but interestingly they all said that it was 99% trippers from Glasgow and Edinburgh in cars who caused a horrendous mess, leaving behind tents, other camping stuff, portable bbqs, poo, baby nappies, bottles, cans, you name it... etc. Highland Council had to hire several people to go round clearing up the mess and it took them months. I made a point of always asking if it was camper vans or motorhomes who were making a mess and they all emphatically(!) said no. Not a very scientific survey, but I found it interesting to discover this.

I've said (for decades now!) that their needs to be very hefty fines for this sort of behaviour, but that will never work unless it is policed and enforced properly. So on that basis, fat chance of anything solving the problem of dirty, disrespectful, ignorant, "entitled" people any time soon 🤷‍♀️ 🫤

We would have had our hands chopped off if we'd left just one scrap of litter anywhere when I was growing up. Taught this by parents from the moment we could walk and talk.

I was taught similarly.

I was fined for littering once (£80) and this being somebody who is absolutely anti littering!

Add f e k i n wankers to the list, i have no fear if i see this been done, even a wheelchair hus a Glesga smile.
I'm sure that is an activity that takes place in car parks everywhere, probably more often than we like to think. Thankfully it is not something I have witnessed myself.

That was a tab end, Rob, good few years ago, I remember you having a damn good moan in here when it happened 🤭 😜🤣🤗

Damn well did Marie.

It wasn't actually the tab end, what I do is let it go out then flick the last of the baccy out and put the butt in a jar in the (work) van.

I tried to explain that it was only a little bit of leaf material like the trees are chucking down all the time, but they were having none of it, you're nicked son!

I have seen many a wooden picnic table with rectangular burnt sections where the idiots have lit their disposable BBQ on top of it.

I also saw one greedy motorhomer park up at Port Errol and not put anything in the honesty box. I just let it go as the idiot was parked close to the sea wall and bad weather was imminent (the waves come over the harbour wall at times). Sure enough, around midnight I heard him start up and move around to the other side of the harbour. :ROFLMAO:

Karma does exist. :giggle:
Should have blocked him in

Loch An Eilein car park is in the Rothiemurcus estate and a lovely spot to overnight. You get the arrive late leave early when the car park attendant isn’t there folks trying it there. What they don’t like is the parking attendant banging on their doors for payment at 6am when he comes to clean the toilets.

Looks as though they're now encouraging use of the campsite for overnighting and charge overnighting in the car park at campsite prices if the campsite is full.

Last time we were then it was £14 if I remember correctly which I don’t mind as it’s a much nicer location than the campsite.

Never stayed there Cal but walked around it many times whilst staying at the Rothiemurcus campsite, lovely place and some great walks into the Lairig Ghru as you know.

Sadly the Ospreys no longer nest there.

Just saw this on Facebook.

That’s awful! We went there two motorhomes and we both paid £5 and paid to use the showers. There are so many hired vans in Scotland nowadays I think these companies need to police it and have some sort of fining system if caught (like if they speed). I think most owners are pretty decent and aware they will ruin it for everyone in the long run

Don’t kid yourself.

Hardly surprising, because motorhomes have their own cooking facilities and rubbish bins. Cars don't. That obvious difference seems to escape many grumblers.

Stayed there a while back with Meg (Biggarmac) probably Jan/Feb 23 a marvelous place and to add to the atmosphere, it snowed, not much... but it did.
If memory serves, we parked away but within sight of the ski centre/restaurant and just enjoyed the surroundings, I believe free of charge.
Next morning we moved to the restaurant car park and then inside and had breakfast, made a donation and enjoyed a bit of people watching.
Did notice a few things done incorrectly with cassettes but actually not a major issue and not a problem.
A fair few foreign plated vans there which may not understand any sinage, or even notice it. I have been in, and come unstuck, in, that situation.
To my mind, if you can see and understand what needs to be done, then, do it.

A big part of the problem is hired vans. When they pick them up they give them a list of places and that’s one of them that whole area is over run with them doing the same route every week some companies have fleets of 40 50 vans now and 80% of the people hiring them would never have been anywhere near a motorhome / camper in there life’s before and don’t have a clue they need a code of practice when handing vans to customers. Shame if they stop taking vans it’s a handy wee place.
