Glencoe facilities being abused

That’s 3/4 of those vans - 15 vans - who didn’t bother paying.

They’re dishonest p*sstakers - you can add entitled and ignorant to the description - and definitely not a “minority” here either! 🫤😠

Trouble is, introduction of more regulated payment facilities will cost more to install, but it’s obviously needed here and more than likely everywhere else where there are existing honesty boxes. 🤷‍♀️
Add f e k i n wankers to the list, i have no fear if i see this been done, even a wheelchair hus a Glesga smile.

It begs the question, why go anywhere Glencoe in summer, when it’s full of people who reckon it’s the nicest place in Scotland, and it’s packed to max with people from everywhere from Europe, Asia, and all parts of the U.K. Glencoe is ONE of the nicest parts of Scotland you can drive a car through, but anyone who has explored the more remote parts of Scotland which involve wearing a pair of boots and being out of breath will tell you it’s greatly overrated. Unfortunately heading to much nicer quieter locations we sometimes have to drive through the madness. Half the folk who drive to Glencoe don’t even know its proper name, (Glen Etive) and could not name any of the hills there.
Heading for Glencoe, Skye, or any of the honeypots in high season is not recommended. You are far better off waiting until late Autumn, winter or early spring.
The hills are far nicer, and so are the people, including the locals who dread the high season and all it entails. And we are a small proportion of this, possibly 10%, but that 10% is magnified by some who simply don’t see all of the cars arriving in their droves.
Am I surprised at what’s going on at these facilities, sadly I am not, would I ever venture there between May and October, not on your Nelly.

Let ‘camping car park’ take it over ,at least the community will get something or maybe a wealthy member on here could form a co-op and invest some cash (when they get back from NZ)

We carry a pack of envelopes in the glove box ...
Honesty boxes or some of our regular farm field park ups where we've been told we are welcome back anytime ...

We just write our reg number on the envelope with payment inside .

Simple, cheap and always means that they know we've paid .

Same as.

Have just returned from the lowlands where we stopped a couple of nights where there was a "donation" box and also envelopes for donations and Bacs details if you wanted to pay direct. Both provided by Glencapel community. Spoke to several people there and said how nice it was to have these facilities and that we had done Bacs payment. The reaction from all (in big expensive motorhomes staying for quite long periods) was that it wasn't compulsory and not policed and they didn't bother ...or didn't know but thought it was optional, so wouldn't donate. Very sad attitude....

They don’t pay because it is an “honesty” system and isn’t policed, hence the sad need to introduce compulsory payment methods. People are selfish and thoughtless.

Add stupid to that, as it usually ends badly with more restrictions, or the removal of facilities entirely, which affects everyone 🫤

I really really don't "get" The freeloading mentality ....
Whenever we have had the option to pay to stop somewhere that has been some sort of community led facility ....
We have been delighted to pay and support the effort ....
Often in the hope that IF we actually pay and support those projects then more would become available as they are proven to pay their way .

The problem being at times are these just the "hirer and drive brigade?"
I gather from other posts and "reports" on other sites etc, these can be the biggest culprits as they wont be back, they are on holiday and don't give a wotsit. And I know that is no way and excuse for this sort of behaviours but sadly thats the seemingly stance some take. The selfish view of getting away with a fiver rather than the knock on effect it can have to the locals and to us honest travellers hoping that these facilities with not just survive, but thrive for many years to come.
Being old n old school, I would like to think that the vast majority of peeps like us on here would pay their way, but todays generations ( sweeping statement I know ) are being brought up on the rights to have lots of money for no work shall we say . So to then a right not to pay.
I have always believed in paying of the way and have always donated to the honesty boxes and too the local village / town etc.

Sad to say, none of these were hirers or young 🤷‍♀️

Then they are just the lowest of, sorry not sorry.
Moho / vanners have a bad enough time re park ups and coping the blame for "stuff", without them adding to it.

In my experience those who behave poorly are not restricted to folk in big expensive vans, or hired vans. They come in all types of vans from extremely basic self built, to expensive vans.
But the vast majority of owners do pay. On The Isle of Harris we witnessed to young girls emptying an honesty box and they informed me almost all who spent the night made their £10 contribution. Even at Elie in Fife, even though far to many vans stay than the seven allowed in the high season, Robbie Blythe informed that nearly all pay their £10.
But he qualified this by stating that even though they were not parked in designated overnight spots, they felt paying somehow meant it was ok to stay in non designated spots.
Poor behaviour tends to be highlighted, whist the vast majority who play by the rules are taken for granted.

We didn’t find enough places to empty toilets and drop grey water when we were in that area and campsites and marinas turned us away even when we offered to pay. On the continent even motorway picnic aires have facilities for the lorry drivers to empty their toilets. I feel so sorry for them especially when I see them all parked in lay-by on our A roads trying to sleep
Campfires are another problem. Living near the coast I am saddened to witness the bbqs on the beach smelling of sausages instead of the sea. I thought that those small bbqs had been banned but apparently not

Ohh I so agree with you there... and yes the bad behaviours are always the headlines.
Bit like all the doom and gloomers on YT van life is over etc. It maybe getting harder but its still out there!

Again goes with the...excuse pun... Pee takers out there Maybe small numbers or not that can ruin it for the majority. But thats usually the way in anything.
I know Scotland appears to be actually realising that there is a need and demand for facilities. Wont ever get like the continent thoughas to many nimbys do not like folks out of the system shall I say.

BUT not all bbqs and rubbish is generated by van /moho'ers .The locals if anything like here just rock up with them or McD ( other stuff is available apparently ) eat and leave the mess and go home. It can be the innocent vanner that cops the blame

I remember when we first parked up just down from Vatersay Village Hall, Outer Hebrides. Left next to a bin was what looked like a fair size tent and other camping sundries ( have a picture of this). Camping tourists who would be taking the ferry back to Oban, and could not be bothered taking their camping gear back to mainland to dispose of. With hindsight, they could have left it packed neatly at the village hall with a note stating, donating to a an island group, but no, just dumped. This was 2013 or 14, so not new this dumping whatever.

Same for disposable BBQ's. Loch Morlich, left to smolder along with the day trippers other rubbish, I dealt with the smoldering BBQ and rubbish. Kingsbarns, smoke coming from a rubbish bin at steps down to beach, some absolute moron put the smoldering BBQ into the bin, which I put water on to dowse. In the morning I caught the Fife council guy who arrived to empty the bins to warn him the bin contents may spill out and to be careful of the BBQ wire. Which he was grateful for.

If you could understand why individuals behave this way, you would be just as bad as them.

Sadly thats part I feel of the throw away society that has grown and grown. We are about to have the big festival here and the amount of camping gear thats just left and some of it in not a good way is still unbelievable. But I guess cheap camp gear for the weekend shared between how many equals a cheap weekend out! Luckily? here, the charities r scouts are allowed in when closed to go get it and re cycle.

Yup they fire them up on grass etc and give no thought to what , or even how too, dispose of them after they have filled their faces. Or just dont care.

I would like to think we might be able to understand but still behave in a decent way.
Or am I just old school or just old, when we were all brought up with that big word Respect!
That seems to have dissapeared.

Many many years back we went to Port Errol and decided to stay the night.

I went over to the honesty box to put my £5 in and one of the other motorhomers came over and asked what i was doing ?

I explained and he said why no one else does, laughed and walked off.
I did similar at what was the Crofter land at Shieldaig, which is now a campsite, the lady from the house next Croft entrance asked what I was looking for, I said honesty box, she said someone had nicked it 🤷‍♂️

Seen the same on St Agnes and Bryher, some don't even bother with taking down the tent! I did say to gf, if you where going over late in season you could probably get away without taking anything with you.

I have seen many a wooden picnic table with rectangular burnt sections where the idiots have lit their disposable BBQ on top of it.

I also saw one greedy motorhomer park up at Port Errol and not put anything in the honesty box. I just let it go as the idiot was parked close to the sea wall and bad weather was imminent (the waves come over the harbour wall at times). Sure enough, around midnight I heard him start up and move around to the other side of the harbour. :ROFLMAO:

Karma does exist. :giggle:
