The End Is Nigh?

As with all things it'll to boil down to how it's applied.

Having lived in a couple of locations where gypsies decided to park next to, and make people's lives hell (yes, only my experience and I'm not extrapolating wider), but the lack of police powers was a real issue. To the point that the locals clubbed together to rent a JCB and threatened to tip the caravans down the slope.

Not great for either party really.

When I was a youngun we had gypsies take over our school playground for a week, police wouldn't act so the parents threatened to lynch them... Again, hardly great for either party.

I think some form of 'improvement' is needed to the legislation.

That said, I fear the new changes will be rather knee-jerky

I see they are talking of reducing the number from 6 to 2 before the police can act. It's very rare for me to share an overnight spot with another van, and one would be the maximum

The video shown from a Brighton looks like us and not travellers.
The travelling community add nothing to our economy, the term used was traveller.
I reckon this is designed to cope with the travelling community, but what is the definition of traveller. I cannot see the police seizing our vehicles. Note the use of the word caravan. This to me looks like a law that will be used to control the travellers.

We have a sports center near us that the car park was invaded by travelers the staff felt threatened and the staff sent home and the center was closed .after a couple of weeks they were removed. A couple of weeks later another group came ,they have now fitted height barriers. The center has many coach visitors the gate has to be un locked and locked or passengers have to disembark on the road .this one height barrier .we we're pleased to see .

Do folk think if i was on mainland if a police officer came to my van and i opened my mouth,i think i would loss the van im well sure, the cops dont know north or south lingo which is where most travelers come from.

Don't think I would risk it .. Save your money .. 🇬🇧 ;)

being serious i would think police would ask for d/licence which may help most folk, many travelers have now got fixed home here as they can now get free meds ,school and live in there vans for so many days, then they switch round keeping within the council rules, one thing i can tell is dont ever take them for fools, they could teach you a thing or two,i know some here by fist names and they dont bother me,plus the homes are tidy.

I witnessed what some travellers did to a purpose built site set up for them near Lennoxtown in east Dunbartonshire, near Glasgow. The council created this site for the travellers, they put in portable toilets, benches, and a water tap.
Well they moved in for around four months, turning the site into a tip.
The council had to get the police to get them out.
They then had to get a company in to clear the site, and to remove chemical waste from the soil. The portable toilet had to be destroyed. Clearing the site cost the council £185,000. And there are large boulders across the entrance now to prevent them from coming back. In Arrochar about ten years ago they took over the carpark across from the garage, it took Argyll and Bute months to get them out, and faced a bill running into thousands for the clean up. I am sure others on here can continue were I have left off.

Anyone who compares us with travellers is clearly wrong, there is no comparison.
We have all worked all of our lives, paid our taxes, and have fixed abodes.
Yes there may be a few idiots, but their behaviour pales into insignificance in comparison to what some travellers do. And this is who the councils are wary and scared of, not us. We may be a nuisance at times, but we don’t destroy carparks, or other places we park up. We don’t leave local communities with large bills to clear up the destruction we have caused, we are not travellers, there is no comparison between us and them. we appreciate what little is done for us, some travellers don’t. This act if it comes to fruition, is clearly targeted at travellers. I cannot see any of us having our vans seized.

I have also seen the mess some travelers leave behind one place was a field that they would occupy and once they left the local council moved in to clean up human waste and rubbish leaving the local council with a hefty bill, the second place was a local football pitch when there wasn’t a football game on the kids used to play on,and once again the local council had to move in when they removed the travelers two councils that could hardly afford it and now both places have big boulders on

We can say motorhomers are nothing like travellers, but what about all the vans who stay for months on a street with the van needing a damn good wash and all sorts of stuff stuffed underneath it. They are part of our community in the eyes of the local people and are a similar menace.

To give the other side, when I was nursing...we had a gentleman who was a Romany living at the local site. He was terminally ill and we went twice daily till he passed. He lived in a beautiful van which was sparkling clean as was most of the site. His family were so caring and respectful, and were lovely to us. We had several conversations with them about "travellers" who ruined things for "true Romany" gypsy's. They seemed to have the same attitude as motorhomers to those elements who leave rubbish, mess and spoil it for others.

Someone who parks up on a street for months in a filthy van needing a good wash.
Are you talking about a van parked outside the owners home, or elsewhere.
If you are talking about elsewhere, then you can compare them with travellers.
As a matter of fact unlike what you state on line one, you have just described a traveller, not a Motorhomer. Travellers don’t need to be Romany to fit the bill, do they. Let’s not confuse the issue Sam. They may be part of our community to some, but surely we know better than that.

Well said, yes all travellers are not as I described in my post, and sadly they are all tarred with the same brush by most, due to the poor behaviour of some.

I'm actually talking about vans that we see in seaside towns parked on the seafront, usually occupied by a single bloke. I don't really care if you want to call them travellers, Irish tinkers or Romany, they are in the eyes of the beholder a motorhomer that is destroying their neighbourhood and are associated with all other motorhomers.

Many vans permanently parked on streets belong to working people who are otherwise homeless. You would be surprised how many people are in this situation.

I think it’s like everything once again it’s the few that give the rest a bad name because as Ruth said some are really clean it’s the few that are not!
