Why do some people have a generator ?

when i'm 'wild' camping i tend to not be near enough to any other camper to be able to hear anything they might be up to ,or vice versa.
unless i'm with friends, who might have a valid reason to run a genny for a while, which wouldn't bother me
also,it's a big world out there,if there is another camper nearby that bothers you, move on,especially if they got there first.

Even more annoying is being at Lytham St Anne's aire and the van next but one has a onboard genny or his engine fireing up at 2am for 20 minutes a time 3 times. Until the van next to him went and had words and the genny van drove off into the darkness.

maybe a normal wild camper?

I don't have a fancy big van, and I don't run a microwave, tv, hairdryer, tumble dryer, electric tools, etc, which other people have posted on here...........so maybe I am not normal.

I have always had an electric shortage on this van, and have posted many threads about this. But last month realised my leisure battery had a charging problem, and have had a new charger installed.

I only have one 85 am leisure batter, unlike most posters who have one or two 110 am batteries. I also sadly only have a portable 6w solar panel. I do spend weeks at a time in my van, but am not a full timer.

I only managed in the past with a faulty charging system, because I stripped washed, used a torch, and did not run any of the fancy equipment mentioned above.

Now that I have the new charging system, I recently went 10 days in brighton..... without booking into a campsite. my 85w amp leisure battery, and my sadly 6 w solar panel, kind or ran everything. I am a heavy laptop user however. I showered every 2nd day, and strip washed every other, twice a day in one basin of water . I used paper plates and cups and knives etc so I did not have much washing up. I had one... 5w led spot light bulb installed, and that one is brighter than both my 16 w strip lights, and all the 8 w spot lights. So I only ran the one light. In those 10 days, I did have to drive a 40 min round trip, twice, to the beach and back to top up the battery.

Because of my 5 hour laptop usage every two days, the kids have brought me a tablet with an 8 hour video time usage, still early days to comment, as I don't like it and tend to stick to my laptop.

Hope that gives you a more balanced view of another motor homer.

I presume the " injunctions " are still in force then :lol-049:

We have our leisure batteries connected to our starter battery...the solar panel charges the leisure batteries first and then trickle charges the starter battery...then, when we wild, we don't have to worry about driving around to top up the starter battery. The leisure batteries do not draw any charge from the starter battery, just the solar panel. Works a treat...

3 weeks ago we were on a busy aire in France when a German van decided to start a generator at around 2 pm. It was only a small Honda generator but the noise could be heard throughout the site. One by one neighbours came across to ask for the generator to be turned off. The owner would shout them down and ignore their request until eventually a French man came fom across the other side of the site and turned the generator off. There was huge applaud and clapping throughout the site. They never turned it on again and they left the next day to everyone's relief. They are not sociable things and not advisable for sites/aires

Unbelievable that someone would consider running a genny on a site next to fellow campers.
As i said previously only use mine whilst wilding so as not to disturb anyone. I used it once on a CL, i was the only motorhome on the site and asked the owners permission first.
I have a modern Honda genny, supposedly one of the quietest but it would still disturb anyone near my motorhome.

There is nothing more annoying than when somebody sticks there generator downwind of their van & you get the noise droning on into your van.

Ever year I stay for extended periods in the alps. Generators are common place and used regularly for battery charging and for other stuff. Mine gets used for back up 240volts and heating systems. To be honest dogs that bark continually and throughout the night are more annoying in my opinion.

yes . i think places like winter in the alps its expected . folk dont mind as they are out playing during the day . etc .
i have found when using my big genny folk come looking sometimes with an angry look on their face . when they see we are doing a repair then its ok . they realize its not going on for hours . very often get asked if we can fix something for them when we have finished our job .

I don't suppose people actually ask their dogs to bark.
