Whitby encourages

Huge Car Park right next to the Town Centre and Railway. Mostly empty at night yet they don't want MHs parked. The suggestion came from an ex Councillor so don't hold your breath. Talk was of using the Car Park at the top of the hill by the Abbey but its something like 170 steps down to the town and the same back.
199 honest.

I think that the great majority staying overnight on car parks give no problem. The problems arise when a few set up camp for a long time, or spread out with perhaps an awning or at least seats, possibly lighting a fire or running a generator.
If all motorhome users just parked their van for a short stay (maybe 1 or 2 days) and didn’t set up outside it I don’t think that there would be such a propensity to ban them. Banning all for the actions of a small minority I think is wrong. Rules preventing the behaviour described and limiting length of stay should be clear and penalties applied to those ignoring them. If these actions were taken there could be a win win, with local areas benefitting from the extra spend and car park fees and motorhomers having more places to stay.

WHAT AN ABSOLUTE PILE OF..........................................................................UTTER COMMON SENSE BILL.

Please stop it its hurting my eyes. :)

Why would they exclude the car park you refer too? Let’s paint the full picture , the car capark is heavily used by coaches servicing the town with visitors and the rail station often used for steam excursions , the reality is it needs an early start, umpteen motorhomes having breakfast doesn’t help. It’s my betting why the abbey car park is volunteered as an alternative,

As Fazerloz suggests plenty of places to park during the day when facilities are open ,,,note park not camp ! I can only surmise people want spoon feeding and can’t be arsed working a solution for themselves

Never been to Whitby, certainly add it to my visit list now the town is pro MH friendly.
It is NOT MH friendly. The local council is in the pockets of B&B owners and the local paper feeds the hostility. The locals hate tourists in any case, but they detest motorhomes.

The car park behind the station, approaching the marina was once going to allow motorhomes - or so they pretended, for as long as it took to get the ban on motorhome parking through. Then suddenly they discovered a reason whey that car park is not suitable after all.

Boycott Whitby until you see the whites of their aires.

Unfortunately it will always be the same UNLESS the Local Council do something about these idiots. That means employing someone to go round and have the power to sort out these problems. Pretty simple just hand out HEAVY fines for those that transgress rather than just leaving them there for months on end hoping they will go away and then putting a barrier up. Most of us would not mind paying for a space overnight with water and waste dump. The fees collected would pay for the policing of the facility.

You get idiots just the same in France. We found one the other year who had managed to cordon off 3 spaces for his use. He had got tables and chairs out, kids bikes, BBQ and all sorts of other junk. I think if people complain though the French Police turn up and they just get it sorted. You are lucky in the Uk if you can find the Police as they are far to busy looking after drunks, car chasers, drugs and not forgetting football matches .. ;)

I hope your legs are good. The car park is 199 steps up from the town. Only partially friendly in so far as they are prepared to allow you to stay on a windswept hilltop in winter.

Since you ask, yes, it is difficult.

Finding a space to park a car in Whitby isn't easy.

Finding a space to park a motorhome is very difficult.
Yes if you turn up after 11 am but if you get there early between 7/9 am there is plenty of parking its like anywhere else you need to arrive earlyish to get a decent spot.

As I keep saying, I have never visited the town, if and when I do go there, I'll then be in a position to judge for myself. As for 199 steps, a dawdle!!
199 X 1. 5 Terry .... you have shorter legs!🤣

But there is a world leading smokehouse you can reward yourself with a kipper half way up or down dependent on your perspective

The coastal path walk from the abbey towards Robin Hoods Bay is stunning and IMO has to be one of Yorkshire’s best kept secrets it’s part of the Cleveland way (I think) for those that have never done it the scenery is intoxicating and as pretty as anywhere else in the country

I will beat you up or down wearing me fins .

Picking up your device tomorrow, data will be transferred to a memory stick, cheaper option.
No posting it on redtube. May pop in tomorrow and heading to Stewarts to take sizes prior to install Tuesday. I have a client picking up a vessel tomorrow, was supposed to be this afternoon as he was convinced the border was being closed on Monday **** must be reading the Metro!

Turn up before 10AM and it is easy after that it is no different to any other popular tourist spot and that's without taking the P&R into consideration. But like most they drive into the wharf/Station area and if they are full class it as there is nowhere to park in Whitby as parking elsewhere involves a hill.

I wouldn't go to Whitby if you paid me. Nothing against the place, I just don't like seaside towns or towns in general really!

But I suppose if they are attracting motorhomers then there is less competition for the places I do want to go to so it's fine by me.
I go to get crabs they beat Cromer crabs any day of the week. 👍

Exactly. It's not really difficult is it. It seems to me like some will not be happy unless they get everything handed to them on a plate.

Meh, part of a trip out for us is a few beers at lunch, a couple of glasses of afternoon tea and a bottle of wine with dinner. Rules out driving anywhere. So we need to park at least somewhere near to the town.

Steps and wheelchairs really don't mix either lol.

You don't have to drive your MH up the steps there is a road 😂 . Also buses and taxi's go up and down as well.

Our experience of taxis for 2 people and an electric wheelchair on a Friday/Saturday night has not been great. Buses? Depends, but rarely any good for the same reasons lol
