no hadrians wall from newcastle upon tyne to whitby or scarborough well not that ive seen , also whats rome got thats so special . the scenery in the area your asking about is known for its outstanding beauty and the north east coast is also outstanding . a darn site better than rome could ever be.

Theres plenty of areas near Haltwhistle where you can walk along the wall, Walltown Crags for example, there's also Vindolanda, a huge excavation area. If you drive east along the B6318 there's loads of Hadrians wall tourist attractions, all depends on what you are looking for. I believe you can overnight at Walltown Crags car park, theres plenty of pubs along the way and I'm sure you can find some that will let me stop overnight.

Banna (Birdoswald) #2, Vindolanda #1.
The wall and mile castles west of carlisle were not stone but turf etc. V. little if any remains. Starting west Hard knott pass fort, ok but mebbe too far. Ravenglass largest remains of intact bathhouse attached to Fort. V. Little at Moresby until Maryport. Good digs and museum. Carlisle has a wee bit in the museum and a stone or two off Bitts park Road. Wall visibly doesn't start until about Brampton. Follow the "military road" which most closely follows the wall and vicus. Kinda gets lost/stops at A1/A69 junction.

HTH.

Chrz Mul.

Google Vindolanda, you won't be disappointed or housesteads.

The best bits of Hadrian's Wall are probably making up the walls in various stately homes and palaces.

Some of the best bits "reused" can be seen at Lanercost Priory. Contrast of local stone and wall stone is impressive to see. Well reminded, ta.

We went to Vindolanda a couple of weeks ago. the excavations are a little way from the wall. You can buy a combined ticket to the excavation site and the Roman Army Museum which is a few miles away next to Walltown Crags.
Have a look at the Vindolanda website, loads of info on there, we had a fantastic day.

From your reply I take it you've never been to Rome and I'm well aware that there is no Roman wall that runs to Whitby

Must get my copy of Nikolaus Pevsner out one day and tour again these merry isles, so much remains to be seen Lanercost Priory for one. Well reminded, touché.

From schooltrips we visited Vindolanda and Housesteads, I assume because of whats left at these locations

There is a lovely camping and caravan club site at Haltwhistle just a short walk from the wall. May I be cast into the bowels of hell for mentioning it. We actually dared to stay there and seemed to get away with it

Funny how the annual school trip to a particular place can put a cloud over it for ever. We had two trips every year, one a boat trip up the Tyne to list all the ships and the other was Hadrians Wall. My memory is of the Romans having communal toilets and using a sponge on a stick to clean up afterwards, and this was shared apparently. I kind of lost my enthusiasm for Roman history after that. South Shields has a Roman fort, but typically they didn't know when to stop the restoration and when I last saw it seemed completely rebuilt.

At a time when the indigenous population were probably using a communal dock leaf with a hole in it. A stick and a sponge....luxury!

Best bits of Hadrians Wall

Hi I live in Brampton near to Hadrians Wall. I think going west to east if you started at Lanercost Priory just off the A69 then up the Banks to Birdoswald Fort follow the road to Gilsland then Greenhead. Then along the old Military road to Housteads theres a nice pub along there called the Milecastle. Follow the road and you can see Sycamore Gap made famous by being in a scene from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Carry on to Chesters where there are more excavations and a museum and Chollerford. The views are fantastic along the whole of this part of the wall and if you are really lucky you might even see the northern lights. The Hadrians wall footpath follows the line of the wall from Bowness on Solway in the West to Wallsend in the East.

blade of grass inserted into a dogs ring piece is still a trick to get them to have a number 2 before work never knew it worked on Scots
